    DAB-Plattform. Jahresbericht 1994/1995

    No full text
The years 1994 and 1995 were of great importance for the multimedia broadcasting system DAB. At the International Funkausstellung IFA (the international radio and television exhibition) in Berlin 1993, plans were announced to conduct DAB pilot projects in Germany. In the period following these plans had to be put into action. The DAB pilots are introductory projects that are supposed to pave the way for the start of regular DAB services in autumn of 1997. They are accompanied by extensive acceptance research projects and further technical studies with the goal to gain sufficient knowledge and experience for the introduction of Digital Audio Broadcasting. The Annual Report in hand for the years 1994 and 1995 documents the way towards the DAB pilot projects and gives a comprehensive overview of the activities of DAB-Plattform e.V. in this period. Furthermore, a glance at the activities concerning DAB all over Europe is not missing, either. As a founding member of the EuroDab forum, which was called into being in 1995, DAB-Plattform participates in the development of a pan-European strategy for the introduction of DAB. The other EuroDab members, too, have envisaged the IFA Berlin 1997 as starting point for the official adoption of digital broadcasting. The myxosporean parasite Myxobolus aeglefini is a marine species, which can be found in the cartilage of mainly gadid fish species. The parasite has, however, been recorded in the flatfish plaice (Pleuronectes platessa) and dab (Limanda limanda). It is not clear if isolates from unrelated hosts represent the same species. Therefore a molecular study was conducted to reveal differences at the DNA level between these isolates. PCR was successfully conducted on three different isolates of Myxobolus aeglefini sampled from cod (Gadus morhua), plaice and dab respectively, using 18S rDNA as template. A PCR product of approx. 1600 base pairs was obtained and RFLP (Restriction Fragment Length Polymerase) was conducted on the fragment with the restriction enzymes Hinf I, Msp I and Hae III. No differences between the isolates were found, suggesting that the three isolates represent the same species

The political decision to replace FM radio with DAB radio between 2010 and 2015 was made in year 2000. This thesis examines and evaluates the circumstances around and the consequences of this decision. In our effort to cover these issues we have chosen the following question as the guideline of the thesis: Why has Denmark decided for the DAB-radio system and what consequences does this decision have for the listeners, the society and radio as a media? The title of this Master thesis “DAB a runaway train – a survey of digital radio in Denmark” reflects the dubious circumstances under which Digital Audio Broadcasting has been introduced to Danish society. Transcripts from parliament debates, reports and hearings about digital radio, shows that there has been no direction or ambition in the decision making process and furthermore that there has been a lack of public debate about advantages, disadvantages and intentions for this new radio broadcasting technology. We conclude, that DAB has been approved in parliament because of a “digital pressure” that is a direct consequence of a fear from falling behind at a time when other countries in Europe were looking at DAB as a future radio solution. We argue that this digital pressure springs from a widespread mindset dominated by technological determinism among the relevant decision makers, and we suggest that a more critical and less deterministic perception of technology is necessary. In order to understand how DAB influences listeners and society we have carried out an empirical study of the DAB radio listeners. The purpose of the study was to explore the use of DAB radio and the experiences of the DAB radio listeners. The study consisted of an online survey, several individual in- depth interviews and a focus group. One main result from the survey was that the listeners are satisfied with the sound quality. On the other hand, the listeners are very dissatisfied with the content which is transmitted on the new DAB channels, and they find the editorial editing insufficient. The main new feature of the DAB receiver – the information screen – is not very well received by the listeners either. This is due to the fact that radio is a non visual media, which implies that the listener prefers to keep eyes and hands free to do other work while listening. Our opinion is that digitisation serves no purpose in itself. Digitisation of the radio carries no advantages unless there is a clear intention about what to transmit on the new channels.Towards the end of the thesis we analyse the empirical data and discuss whether the DAB-channels can satisfy the requirements of the public service contract that the national Danish broadcasting corporation (DR) is obliged to adhere to. Our conclusion is that the DAB project is completed with a lack of political guidance, sufficient resources and without thorough editorial planning. In other words, DAB does not comply with the Danish public service requirements for quality. The political decision to replace FM radio with DAB radio between 2010 and 2015 was made in year 2000. A computationally efficient DAB bit-stream processor

    No full text
This paper describes an MPEG (moving pictures expert group) audio layer II - LFE (lower frequency extension) bit-stream processor targeting DAB (digital audio broadcasting) receivers that will handle the decoding of the frames in a computationally efficient manner to provide a synthesis sub-band filter with the reconstructed sub-band samples. Focus is given to the frequency sample reconstruction part, which handles the re-quantization and re-scaling of the samples once the necessary information is extracted from the frame. The comparison to a direct implementation of the frequency sample reconstruction block is carried out to prove increased computational efficiency

Modeling, Control, and Operation of an M-DAB DC-DC Converter for Interconnection of HVDC Grids

    No full text
Future high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) networks based on voltage source converters (VSCs) will have different structures (asymmetric monopolar, bipolar, or symmetric monopolar), voltage levels, control, and protection schemes. Therefore, dc-dc converters are needed to interconnect those VSC-HVDC grids and several technical issues on their control and operational systems must be adequately addressed. A dc-dc converter based on a modular-dual active bridge (M-DAB) converter is suggested to reach a desirable interconnection of the HVDC grids and regulate power flow (PF) between them. A dynamic averaged model is proposed for the M-DAB converter and its stability is analyzed using the Lyapunov function. Moreover, a new local controller based on nonlinear control theory is proposed for the M-DAB. The new M-DAB local controller is integrated with the energy management system (EMS), by updating the PF equations, to create a complete control structure. Considering the CIGRE DCS3 HVDC test system and the studied M-DAB, static, dynamic simulation, and experimental studies are conducted and the dc-dc converter and the performance of the designed controllers and the EMS are examined and validated.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository 'You share, we take care!' - Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Intelligent Electrical Power Grid

    No full text
In this paper, a simple laboratory measurement workplace, proposed for educational purposes, to measure the performance of the DAB/DAB+ signal is presented. The RTL2832U software defined radio (SDR) is used as a receiver of the DAB signal in the measurement setup. Freeware available program DAB Player is used to analyze the DAB signal on the objective and subjective level. The functionality of the proposed concept as well as the applied measurement methodology is verified by simple experimental measurements
