The capacity of the subarray partial concentrators

    No full text
AbstractA partial concentrator with parameters n, m, and c, is an n (inputs) × m (outputs) bipartile graph such that any set of k inputs, k≤c, has a perfect matching to some set of k outputs. A partial concentrator is regular if each input has M edges and each output has nMm edges. We study the problem of maximizing c for given m,n and M. For n=(mM)2 Kufta and Vacroux, and Richards and Hwang gave a similar construction of a partial concentrator and proved c≥M2+M−1. If, furthermore, mM is a prime, the construction given by Richards and Hwang has a cyclic property. In this paper we use this cyclic property to prove c≥M2+2M−2. This is the best result possible for M=3 since it coincides with an upper bound previously proved

The disappearance of style in the US equity market

This paper investigates the modelling of style returns in the US and the returns to style "tilts" based on forecasts of enhanced future style returns. We use hidden Markov model to build our forecasts. Our finding that style returns are less forecastible in more recent years is consistent with the hypothesis that style returns are the result of anomalies rather than risk premia. The erosion of anomalous returns as public awareness of their presence is translated into strategies that arbitrage away the excess returns seems to be a hypothesis consistent with our modelling results

Nature and Structure of Personal Identity: an Analysis of Selected Works of G.W. Leibniz

    No full text
Artykuł stanowi zmodyfikowaną wersję pracy licencjackiej napisanej przeze mnie w roku 2015, której promotorem był dr hab. Bogusław Paź.The main aim of this paper is to reconstruct G. W. Leibniz’s view on nature and structure of human identity. For this purpose selected writings of the author and of several other philosophers whose impact on his conclusion was the most noticeable are exploited. Analysis of these sources in relation to Leibniz’s whole monadological system provides us with the explication of human identity in his anthropology. In the first part the author concentrates on the historical background of a reflection on the notion of nature, which in Leibniz’s philosophy constitutes the basis of human identity. The Hanoverian philosopher, as the author claims, continues Aristotle’s thought on this issue. Afterwards a basic individual being – monad – is presented. Through the monad the German philosopher managed to unite two – seemingly opposing – perspectives: substancial (aristotelism) with “consciously-reflective”, which is synonymous with Descartes’ cogito. In the second part the author introduces the concept of the human person, which indicates such features as rationality, substantiality and individuality. From the latter flows such characteristics of personhood as uniqueness, distinctiveness and incommunicability. Even though this classical interpretation of the person was deconstructed by Descartes, the author shows that the monadic subject did not lose the attributes Leibniz’s processors wrote about. In the third part the author presents John Locke’s interpretation of the human identity described in his opus magnum – An essay concerning human understanding, in opposition to which Leibniz developed his own theory. In the fourth part the structure of human identity in the interpretation of the German is presented. The author of this paper particularly focuses on the characteristics of its two dimensions: real identity and moral identity. At the end, in the fifth part, the epistemological foundation of Leibniz’s anthropology: perception, apperception and reflection, its specifics and the relation to two levels of human identity presented in Nouveaux essais sur l’entendement humain are explored.Adrianna Senczyszyn, studentka Uniwersytetu WrocławskiegoUniwersytet WrocławskiArystoteles, Metafizyka, oprac. The Rationalistic Principles of G.W. Leibniz’s Political Philosophy

    No full text
Niniejszy artykuł stanowi zmodyfikowaną część pracy licencjackiej napisanej w 2015 r. pod kierunkiem prof. B. Pazia. The main aim of this paper is to present and describe the rationalistic principles of Leibniz’s political philosophy. The description of these principles allows one to systematize the theory of the German thinker and to explain its essential character as a rationalist interpretation of political reality. For this purpose various writings of the philosopher, mostly those untranslated into Polish, are exploited. An analysis of these sources in relation to Leibniz’s philosophical system as a whole is the main tool of explication of the discussed issues. The author distinguishes five basic principles of Leibniz’s political theory. The superior one among them is the principle of reason (principium rationis) which is at the core of rationalistic perception of political reality. The articulation of this principle is included in the phrase “the empire of reason” (l’Empire de la raison), which could be considered as representative for the philosopher’s theory and the demand of rational thinking and acting presented in it. From the superior principle of reason stem the other more detailed principles: principle of perfection and order of universum, primacy of natural law, justice as caritas sapientis and the sovereign as imago Dei. All of these principles, as Leibniz’s entire political theory, are considered in the broad context of his philosophical system with particular reference to metaphysics. The close link between politics and metaphysics is in fact, beside firm rooting in philosophical tradition and Roman law, a characteristic feature of Leibniz’s thought and is distinctive on the historical background of the Modern age.Aleksandra Horowska, studentka Uniwersytetu WrocławskiegoUniwersytet WrocławskiArystoteles, Polityka, tłum. Nations and terrorisms in speeches by V.V. Putin and G.W. Bush

    No full text
In this cross-national case study the author, as a former appreciator of Vladimir Putin's policy toward Chechnya, has tried to interpret the war on terrorism as a constructed entity by political leaders in crisis situations. Being inspired by the structural analysis of mythology he tries to identify the similarities and differences in the narratives about terrorism constructed by Vladimir Putin and G.W. Bush. The author argues that the both situations - in Russia in September 1999 and in USA after 11.9.2001 - could be regarded as crisis situations, and that is why the similarities could be found in the narratives about terrorism, articulated by both political leaders. In the first part of this paper, the author has shown the historical context of crisis in both countries. The second and the third part of the work is a qualitative content analysis of Bush's and Putin's speeches related to terrorism. The author has analytically divided speeches into two major blocks: "before" (speeches produced by the leaders in the short period after the crisis) and "after" (speeches produced by the leaders during their military campaigns on terror). The author argues that despite the minor mutations in the narrative, the structure of the myth was not affected. The main achievement of this case study is the finding that the..
