Escherichia coli is engineered to grow on CO2 and formic acid

    No full text
We engineered Escherichia coli to grow on CO and formic acid alone by introducing the synthetic CO and formic acid assimilation pathway, expressing two formate dehydrogenase genes, fine-tuning metabolic fluxes and optimizing the levels of cytochrome bo and bd-I ubiquinol oxidase. Our engineered strain can grow to an optical density at 600 nm of 7.38 in 450 h, and shows promise as a platform strain growing on CO and formic acid alone

A New Biased Proportional Navigation Guidance for Decelerating Targets

    No full text
This paper aims to suggest a new type of biased proportional navigation guidance (PNG) for a target that undergoes a considerable deceleration during a homing engagement. To this end, the exact collision course between the missile and the target is first determined. This condition is given by a function of the time-varying speed of the target until the interception. The above interception condition is relaxed by utilizing the concept of average speed. Finally, the proposed law is realized in a way of achieving that condition, using the idea of biased PNG. We discuss the characteristics and implementation issues of the proposed approach. We validate the performance of the proposed algorithm using numerical simulations. © 2022, The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd

Highly responsive near-infrared photodetector with low dark current using graphene/germanium Schottky junction with Al2O3 interfacial layer

    No full text
The performance of a graphene/Ge Schottky junction near-infrared photodetector is significantly enhanced by inserting a thin Al2O3 interfacial layer between graphene and Ge. Dark current is reduced by two orders of magnitudes, and the specific detectivity is improved to 1.9 x 10(10) cm . Hz(1/2)W(-1). The responsivity is improved to 1.2 AW(-1) with an interfacial layer from 0.5 AW(-1) of the reference devices. The normalized photo-todark current ratio is improved to 4.3 x 10(7) W-1 at a wavelength of 1550 nm, which is 10-100 times higher than those of other Ge photodetectors.11Ysciescopu

Effect of Surface Structure Complexity on Interfacial Droplet Behavior of Superhydrophobic Titanium Surfaces for Robust Dropwise Condensation

    No full text
In general, the dropwise condensation supported by superhydrophobic surfaces results in enhanced heat transfer relative to condensation on normal surfaces. However, in supersaturated environments that exceed a certain supersaturation threshold, moisture penetrates the surface structures and results in attached condensation, which reduces the condensation heat transfer efficiency. Therefore, when designing superhydrophobic surfaces for condensers, the surface structure must be resistant to attached condensation in supersaturated conditions. The gap size and complexity of the micro/nanoscale surface structure are the main factors that can be controlled to maintain water repellency in supersaturated environments. In this study, the condensation heat exchange performance was characterized for three different superhydrophobic titanium surface structures via droplet behavior (DB) mapping to evaluate their suitability for power plant condensers. In addition, it was demonstrated that increasing the surface structure complexity increases the versatility of the titanium surfaces by extending the window for improved heat exchange performance. This study demonstrates the usefulness of DB mapping for evaluating the performance of superhydrophobic surfaces regarding their applicability for industrial condenser systems.11Nsciescopu

Giving shape to time: An investigation into mixed-media installation

    No full text
This research investigates ways of shaping time and identifying the characteristics of time that evolve in my art practice with reference to a synthesis of two and three-dimensional material, sound, and video. The nature of this study is a three-way material exchange between theoretical discourses, my practice, and audience response. The theoretical discourse includes a survey of the notions of time from different fields of knowledge from science, literature, anthropology, and memory studies. Additionally, an analysis of two contemporary installations, Normal & Nature by a Thai artist, Kamin Lertchaiprasert, and Going Forth by Day by an American artist, Bill Viola, is included. Project 1, A solo show by Toeingam Srisubut, featured three art pieces: time-scape, container site, and ... and a real TV. The first project explored the potential media that can give shape to time and make the characteristics of time explicit. My evaluation of this project focuses on analysing the characteristics of time that grow out of my three works, and examining the audience's multiple readings of time that reveal various indicators, e.g. spaces, narratives, audience's and my memories, and certain Thai social and economic elements. In Project 2, a sound and performance installation Rush Hour, narrative, space, and audience participation are considered specifically. I am testing out how effective the three indicators can give shape to time, and identifying the different characteristics of time of the installation placed in a specific environment of Koh Samui. Project 3, a mix-media installation, When I grow rich, say the bells of Shoreditch, re-tested the three indicators. This project demonstrates my personal, cultural engagements and interpretations of these indicators. The research identifies further areas for potential studies within various aspects of time as well as practical ways of giving shape to it

Accurate single-shot measurement technique for the spectral distribution of GeV electron beams from a laser wakefield accelerator

    No full text
© 2019 Author(s).We present a technique, based on a dipole magnet spectrometer containing multiple scintillation screens, to accurately characterize the spectral distribution of a GeV electron beam generated by laser wakefield acceleration (LWFA). An optimization algorithm, along with a numerical code, was developed for trajectory tracking and reconstructing the electron beam angle, divergence, and energy spectrum with a single-shot measurement. The code was validated by comparing the results with the Monte-Carlo simulation of electron beam trajectories. We applied the method to analyze data obtained from laser wakefield acceleration experiments performed using a multi-Petawatt laser to accelerate electron beams to multi-GeV energy. Our technique offers a high degree of accuracy to faithfully characterize electron beams with the nonnegligible shot-to-shot beam pointing fluctuations, particularly in the state-of-the-art multi-GeV LWFA experiments performed to push the energy frontier11sciescopu
