    ABSTRACT JUJURANA. The Effectiveness of Using Computer Games For Vocabulary Learning of Kindergarten (Supervised by Djamiah Husain and Sukardi Weda) The objectives of the research were: (1) to find out whether the use of Computer Games improves the kindergarten pupils’ vocabulary, and (2) to find out whether the pupils were interested in learning vocabulary through Computer Games. Researcher applied time series analysis with single group design. The population of this research was the kindergarten pupils of RA. Rezky Syafaat, age 4-5 years old. The sample was class A which consists of 10 pupils. The class was given treatment using Computer Games. The class was given six times test and four times treatment. The results of the research were: (1) the use of Computer Games in learning vocabulary did not improve the pupils’ vocabulary; (2) the pupils were interested in learning vocabulary through Computer Games. Researcher concluded that the use of Computer Games is not effective to improve the kindergarten pupils’ vocabulary although the pupils have very high interest toward learning vocabulary through Computer Games. Peneliti menggunakan analisis Time Series dengan desain grup tunggal. Populasi penelitian ini adalah murid Raudhatul Athfaal Rezky Syafaat berusia 4 hingga 5 tahun. Sampel yang digunakan adalah Kelas A yang terdiri atas 10 orang murid. Kelas tersebut diberikan perlakuan menggunakan Komputer Games. Mereka diberikan 6 kali tes dan 4 kali perlakuan. Hasil penelitian ini adalah: (1) penggunaan Game Komputer dalam pembelajaran kosakata tidak meningkatkan kosakata murid-murid; (2) para murid tertarik mempelajari kosakata menggunakan Game Komputer. Peneliti menyimpulkan bahwa penggunaan Game Komputer tidak efektif untuk meningkatkan kosa kata murid Taman Kanak-kanak meskipun para murid memiliki ketertarikan yang tinggi pada pembelajaran kosakata melalui Game Komputer

    The Attitude of Economic Students and Lecturers toward Economic English Material Based on Shariah Economy System

    This research aimed to investigate Economic students and lecturers’ attitude toward economic English material based on shariah economy system. The material was the new material design that combined economic English in general and shariah economy concept in a teaching and learning material. This research is survey research. It was held at Economy Faculty of Dayanu Ikhsanuddin University Baubau Indonesia in 2015/2016 academic year. This research was limited to analyze both Economic students and lecturers’ attitude toward economic English material based on shariah economy system. The Participants of the study were 100 Economic students and 20 Economic lecturers. The instruments used were questionnaire and interview. All participants were invited to respond to questionnaires. And they then participated in follow-up interviews. The results of the study showed that the main score of students’ attitude was 42.24 and lecturers’ attitude was 41.50. From the main above indicated that both Economic students and lecturers had positive attitude toward economic English material based on shariah economy system.</jats:p

    The Effects of Metacognitive Strategy instruction on Students' Reading J Comprehension Achievement and Metacognitive Awareness at SMA Negeri 8 Makassar

    Abstract: The objectives of this research were: (1) to find out whether or not the metacognitive strategy instruction has any significant effect on students' reading comprehension achievement, and (2) to find out wheter or not me metacognitive strategy instruction has any significant effect on metacognitive awareness. This research employed quasi-experimental design with non-equivalent groups. The population of this research was the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 8 Makassar in 2011/2012 academic year with total number of population was 240 students. The sample was 80 students which selected by using cluster random sampling. In collecting data, there were three main instruments were used: reading comprehension test, metacognitive Awareness of Reading Strategy Inventory (MARSI) questionnaire and interview guide (semi-Structured interview). Data from reading comprehension test and MARSI questionnaire were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Data from interview were analyzed using content analysis. The results of the research were: (1) there was a significant effect on students' reading comprehension archievement through metacognitive strategy instruction (2) there was a significant effect on students' metacognitive awareness through metacognitive strategy instruction. It was proved by the probability value (p) at the student’ score of MARSI questionnaire was lower than alpha (.000 < 0.05)

    A Model of Creating Instructional Materials Based on the School Curriculum for Indonesian Secondary Schools

    English performance and competence of Indonesian secondary school students are low. This may result from poor instructional materials so that they do not meet the students’ need; and this should be the main objective for English teachers to improve the learning outcome of students. The purpose of this study is to develop a model of creating instructional materials based on school curriculum. Creating a model of designing instructional materials is part my developmental study consisting of need analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation; this paper discuss need analysis to create a model of creating instructional materials through deep discussion among teachers of secondary schools. The result presents some main procedures need analysis, designing, developing the materials, implementation, and evaluation (ADDIE). The other components include purpose, school curriculum, application of pedagogical aspects, contextualization. The model is derived from ADDIE, Dick and Carey, Jolly &amp; Bolitho, and Instructional Development Learning system (IDLS). Instructional materials with different strategies and various materials improve the English achievement of the students. Both teachers and students argue that appropriate instructional materials are good enough to be used in the teaching and learning process to increase the English achievement of the students.     Developing Authentic-based Instructional Materials for Writing Skill

    The overall aim of this study is to develop an authentic-based instructional material for writing skill. Therefore, the research applied Research and Development design and used ADDIE model which consists of five stages namely Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. A Questionnaire was given to the third-semester students in Education Department of UIN Alauddin Makassar as the instrument to find out the students’ need analysis. After designing the product, the material was validated by two experts and then implemented to the students. The implementation process of the authentic-based instructional materials was done twice in a small number of students consisted 10 students as the first try out and in a large number of students consisted of 30 students as the second try out. Then, evaluation of the materials was given by the experts, the lecturers, and the students. Data were analyzed using percentages and charts. In addition, the analysis of the data shows that most students, lecturers, and the experts gave positive responses towards the developed materials. The material was revised three times by considering the comments and suggestions by the experts, lecturers, and the students. The model of the developed materials consisted of some aspects namely goal, topic, activities, approach, media, genres, content, and testing strategy. Moreover, the learning process consisted of four parts namely discussion, pre-writing, writing, and post-writing.</jats:p

The writer applied preexperimental method with one group pretest and posttest design. The subject of the research was the first grade students of SMA Hasanuddin Gowa of academic year 2010-2011. The research used total sampling, consists of 43 students. The data were collected through listening test (pretest and posttest). To find out whether the uses of English songs improve the listening ability of senior high school students, the writer uses t-test analysis. The result of the data analysis showed that there was a significant difference between pretest and posttest. It was proven by the value of t-test (23.79) which was greater than the t-table (2.021) with the level of significance (α) = 0.05 and degree of freedom (df) = 42. The mean score of the posttest (57.51) was greater than the mean score of pretest (33.72). Based on the finding and discussion of the study, the writer concludes that the use of English songs can improve listening comprehension of the first grade of SMA Hasanuddin Gowa

    ABSTRACT Designing English Instructional Materials for EFL Senior High School Students Based on School Curriculum. (Supervised by Promoter Djamiah Husain, Copromoters Haryanto and Baso Jabu). The purpose of this study is to design instructional materials or a course book based on the school curriculum with the main teaching procedures: presentation, practice, and production for EFL students, the research question are: what instructional materials meet the secondary school students needs in learning English? Are the instructional materials effective to improve the students’ English achievement? What are the students’ perception to the use of the instructional materials and what is the teachers’ perception toward the instructional materials? This Developmental Research consisted of need analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The need analysis through deep discussion presents a model of English teaching and prototype which was tried out to get appropriate instructional materials with pretest and posttest design at three secondary schools. The instructional materials and instruments used were validated by the experts in their field. At every stage of development the materials were discussed and validated. The result indicated that instructional materials based on the school curriculum and the procedures of presentation, practice and production are appropriate for students and school curriculum. Instructional materials with different strategies and various materials effective to improve the English achievement of the students. Both teachers and students argue that the instructional materials are good enough to be used in the teaching and learning process to increase the English achievement of the EFL students. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk merancang bahan ajar yang didasarkan pada kurikulum sekolah dengan prosedur pengajaran yaitu, presentasi, praktek, dan produksi. Bahan ajar ini diperuntukkan bagi siswa pengguna bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing. Pertanyaan yang akan dijawab melalui penelitian ini adalah bahan ajar yang bagaimanakah yang sesuai dengan kebutuhan siswa? Bagaimana materi pembelajaran yang efektif untuk dapat meningkatkan kemampuan bahasa Inggris siswa? Bagaimana persepsi guru tentang materi bahan ajar? Bagaimana persepsi siswa tentang materi bahan ajar? Penelitian pengembangan ini terdiri dari analisis kebutuhan, disain bahan ajar, penerapan bahan ajar dan evaluasi bahan ajar. Analisis kebutuhan dilakukan melalui diskusi dengan beberapa guru yang menyajikan model pengajaran Bahasa Inggris dan draft, yang disusun untuk mendapatkan bahan ajar melalui distribusi pretest dan posttest pada tiga sekolah menengah di Makassar. Materi pembelajaran dan instrument yang digunakan divalidasi oleh para ahli di bidangnya. Pada setiap tahap pengembangan materi, telah melalui proses pembahasan dan validasi oleh tim ahli. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa bahan ajar yang disusun berdasarkan kurikulum sekolah dan menggunakan prosedur presentasi, praktek dan produksi, mampu meningkatkan prestasi belajar siswa. Bahan ajar dengan berbagai strategi yang berbeda dan ragam materi, dapat meningkatkan prestasi belajar Bahasa Inggris para siswa. Guru dan siswa berpendapat bahwa bahan ajar yang baik akan efektif digunakan dalam proses belajar mengajar untuk meningkatkan prestasi siswa pengguna bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing. Murni Mahmud) Teacher is a key point in teaching and learning process in the classroom. His/her talk is not only to transfer the information and the knowledge but also to control the class. Teacher talk in the foreign language classroom is still a problematic area for language teacher. So the problems statement in this research are (1) What are the types of teacher management talk used by the teacher in teaching English?, and (2) What are the language functions of management talk used by the teacher in teaching English? This research aimed to (1) describe what the parts of management talk used by the teacher in teaching English, and (2) describe what the language function of management talk used by the teacher in teaching English. This research employed descriptive qualitative method. It aims to describe the parts and language functions of teacher management talk used by the teacher in teaching English in the classroom interaction. The researcher used purposive sampling by taking one teacher as participant to be observed. The instruments that the researcher used were Classroom observation checklist and field notes. The research result indicated that (1) there were eighteen types of management talk that the teacher used in teaching and learning process, and (2) there are seven language functions of management talk that the teacher used in the classroom activities, and (3) Management talk is effective to be used for the language of management to manage teaching and learning activities in the classroom. The researcher gives some suggestions: (1) an English teacher should always try to improve his knowledge especially in using management talk to become a good model for his/her students, and (2) the teachers are suggested to talk should be correct, fun, and easy to understand in every interaction of students. Murni Mahmud) Guru ada adalah kunci penting dalam proses belajar mengajar dalam kelas. Tuturannya bukan hanya untuk mentrasfer ilmu dan informasi tapi juga untuk mengatur jalannya pembelajaran. Tutur guru dalam pengajaran asing masih merupakan problematika bagi guru bahasa. Oleh karena itu rumusan masalah masalah dalam penelitian ini adalah (1) Apakah jenis manajemen tutur guru yang digunakan dalam pengajaran bahasa Inggris?, dan (2) Apakah fungsi bahasa dari manajemen tutur guru yang digunakan dalam pengajaran bahasa Inggris? Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk (1) mendeskripsikan bagian-bagian manajemen tutur guru dalam pengajaran bahasa Inggris, dan (2) mendeskripsikan fungsi bahasa dari manajemen tutur guru dalam pengajaran bahasa Inggris Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Dengan tujuan untuk mendeskripsikan bagian-bagian dan fungsi-fungsi bahasa dari manajemen tutur guru dalam pengajaran bahasa Inggris dalam interaksi kelas. Peneliti menggunakan purposive sampling dengan mengambil satu orang guru untuk diobservasi. Instrument yang digunakan adalah ceklis observasi kelas dan catatan lapangan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa (1) ada delapan belas jenis manajemen talk yang digunakan oleh guru dalam proses belajar, dan (2) ada tujuh fungsi bahasa yang digunakan dalam aktivitas kelas, dan (3) Management talk is effective to be used for the language of management to manage teaching and learning activities in the classroom. Saran peneliti adalah (1) seorang guru bahasa Inggris harus mengetahui dan menambah ilmu pengetahuannya khususnya dalam penggunaan manajemen tutur agar bisa menjadi model yang baik bagi siswanya.     Improving Students’ Writing Skill through Paragraph Development Techniques

    ABSTRACT MASSIARA. 2012. Improving Students’ Writing Skill through Paragraph Development Techniques (Under the supervision Muhammad Amin Rasyid and Djamiah Husain). This research aims at examining whether or not paragraph development techniques improve the writing skill of the eleventh grade students of SMA1 Wundulako, Kolaka regency, South East Sulawesi in academic year of 2011/2012, and investigating their interest in learning writing through paragraph development techniques. This research employed quasi experimental design group which assigned two groups, namely experimental group and control group. Each group consisted of 27 students. These groups were selected by applying cluster random sampling technique. The researcher conducted the research using writing test of analytical exposition by giving pretest, treatment, and posttest. The data were gained from the pretest, treatment, and posttest. The data were gained from the pretest and posttest and analyzed by using inferential statistics through SPPS 17.0 version. The findings of the research reveal that paragraph development techniques significantly improve the students’ writing skill. It was shown by the result of inferential statistics by examining the students’ scores both in pretest and posttest of experimental and control group. The mean score of the posttest of the experimental group is 72.00, which is higher than the mean score of the posttest of control group, 60.11. Based on the data, the researcher concludes that paragraph development techniques significantly improve the students’ writing skill and students are interested in paragraph development techniques. ABSTRAK MASSIARA. 2012. Meningkatkan Ketermpilan Menulis Siswa melalui Teknik-teknik Pengembangan Paragraph (Dibimbing oleh H.Muhammad Amin Rasyid dan Hj. Djamiah Husain). Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui apakah teknik-teknik pengembangan paragraph dapat secara signifikan meningkatkan keterampilan menulis Siswa Kelas Sebelas SMA Negeri 1 Wundulako, Kabupaten Kolaka, Propinsi Sulawesi Tenggara, tahun pelajaran 2011/2012 dan untuk mengetahui minat mereka terhadap teknik-teknik pengembangan paragraf. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain quasi experimental yang terdiri atas dua kelompok penelitian yaitu kelas eksperimen dan kelas kontrol. Masing-masing kelompok terdiri atas 27 siswa. Sampel dipilih dengan menggunakan teknik cluster random sampling. Peneliti melakukan penelitian dengan menggunakan test menulis jenis teks yang berbentuk exposisi analitis melalui tiga tahapan yaitu pretest, perlakuan, dan posttest. Data diperoleh dari hasil analisis pretest dan posttest dengan menggunakan statistik inferensial melalui program SPSS versi 17.0. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa teknik-teknik pengembangan paragraf secara signifikan meningkatkan keterampilan menulis siswa. Hal tersebut ditunjukkan dengan statistik inferensial dalam pengujian hasil menulis siswa dalam penghitungan hasil pretest maupun posttest pada kelompok eksperimen dan kelompok kontrol. Nilai rata-rata hasil posttest untuk kelompok experimen adalah 72,00 yang mana lebih tinggi daripada nilai rata-rata hasil posttest untuk kelompok kontrol, yaitu 60.11. Berdasarkan data yang diperoleh tersebut, peneliti menyimpulkan bahwa teknik-teknik pengembangan paragraf secara signifikan meningkatkan keterampilan menulis siswa.
