The Stag Hunt

    No full text
The Stag Hunt is a story that became a game. The game is a prototype of social contract. The Stag Hunt does not have the same melodramatic quality as the Prisoner's Dilemma. In the Stag Hunt, what is rational for one player to choose depends on his beliefs about what the other will choose. Both stag hunting and hare hunting are equilibria. That is just to say that it is best to hunt stag if the other player hunts stag and it is best to hunt hare if the other player hunts hare. The two mentioned games, Prisoner's Dilemma and the Stag Hunt, are not unrelated. Considerations raised by both Hobbes and Hume can show that a seeming Prisoner's Dilemma is really a Stag Hunt. Suppose that Prisoner's Dilemma is repeated. Then actions on one play may affect partner's actions on other plays, and considerations of reputation may assume an importance that they cannot have if there is no repetition

    Brian Chapman Collection

    Associated Persons
Brian Chapman (Creator)Previously a sports administrator from South Australia who had just finished a term as CEO of Basketball Northern Territory, Brian Chapman moved to the Gold Coast in 1991. A running coach by background Chapman soon started his own squad but also quickly became involved in triathlon administration as secretary on the Triathlon Queensland board. By 1992 he was also in the Triathlon Australia board. Chapman remained involved in triathlon governance for most of the 1990s.

Perhaps as a result of his background in administration, Chapman maintained well organised files of Triathlon Queensland and Triathlon Australia papers. Official Triathlon Australia records from the 1990s were boxed and transferred from Triathlon Australia headquarters in Canberra to Sydney in the early 2000s due to personnel change. Unfortunately the records were destroyed through water damage following a storm. The Chapman papers thus provide the chief collection of Triathlon Australia records from the decade preceding the Sydney Olympics. Despite this, the collection is patchy, with an emphasis on Queensland in the early 1990s with most Triathlon Australia records focused on high performance in the period from 1995 to 1997.

My mentored research project was a terrific experience. I have been mentored with Dr. Brian Poole for the last three years. As a result of the project that was made possible by the ORCA grant, I was the first author on an abstract submitted and accepted by the International Immunology Summit. This last October I attended the International Immunology Summit in Las Vegas, Nevada. Dr. Poole and I presented our research and I responded to questions from the audience. I am currently an author on a manuscript that in progress that has been submitted for review. I have enjoyed my work on this project and I am grateful for the generous donations that made it possible

Book Review: Victims of Crime and Community Justice Brian Williams (2005) London: Jessica Kingsley

Reviews the book, Victims of Crime and Community Justice by Brian Williams (2005). This book begins with a broad overview of the development of victim focus in criminal justice policy in the UK, the EU and beyond. It incorporates an analysis of how community justice measures and restorative justice have responded to the need for a 'rebalancing' of criminal justice policy to take account of victims' and witnesses' needs. In this account, the author explores the notion that the line between victim and offender is not always clear-cut, and then discusses how criminal justice policy is attempting to respond to this. To balance the demonstration of challenges and problems faced in implementing restorative justice, the author provides useful examples of 'successful innovations', including family group conferences, apologies from offenders and peace committees. His accessible style makes this a useful addition for those needing to understand better how victims fit into the new community justice approaches, incorporating restorative justice and witness support. His insightful and interesting consideration of 'hidden' victims of corporate crime and injustice and human trafficking makes this a valuable contribution to the field of victimology and a useful text for a broad audience.
