DESIGN AND OPTIMIZATION OF A LOGO-TYPE ANTENNA FOR MULTIBAND APPLICATIONS
[[abstract]]This study respectively uses two optimizers, iterative Taguchi's method and particle swarm optimization, combined with the method of moments to optimize a logotype planar antenna for multiband applications. The proposed antenna consists of four metal letters, NCNU, which is the abbreviation of the authors' university name. This antenna can be used for university logo or advertisement applications. The antenna also serves as an example to compare the optimization performance of these two optimizers. Optimization results show that Taguchi's method achieves much better optimization performance than particle swarm optimization. This study also investigates the electromagnetic characteristics of the proposed antenna by parametric study using simulation. The presented optimization methods could be applied to designing similar logotype antennas.[[note]]SC
The relationship between team communication, structure, and academic R&D performance: empirical evidence of the national telecommunication program in Taiwan
[[abstract]]This research evaluates the frontier National Telecommunication Program (NTP) in Taiwan using the data envelopment analysis approach and analyzes the influence of team communication and structure on R&D performance by establishing a structural equation modeling relationship. The results show that team communication is highly correlated with R&D performance. The high-scored projects have internal communication patterns with a higher meeting frequency but shorter dialogue duration, a uniform distribution of regular meetings, a scheme for the lower hierarchy to meet with the project leader, a well-managed channel to access accumulative expertise, and an open forum for communication. They also have external communication patterns with a gatekeeper bridging inward and outward information, a lower frequency of time-consuming external sourcing, and a higher frequency of external cooperation, referencing, learning, and benchmarking. Though team structure has no significant influence on R&D performance, the high-scored research group focused more on the structural dimensions of research strategy, laboratory management, and motivation incentives. This research will provide effective principles of project management to team leaders and industrial policy guidelines to program sponsors.[[note]]SSC
Speciation of a water-soluble chromium porphyrin by spectral and electrochemical methods
[[abstract]]A water-soluble chromium porphyrin, [Cr(111)TF(4)TMAP](5+) (chromium(III) meso-tetrakis(2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-N,N,N-trimethyl-4-anilinium)yl) porphyrin) was synthesized and the spectral and electrochemical properties were examined. In aqueous solution, [Cr(111)TF(4)TMAp](5+) exhibits two pK(a)s at 7.04 and 10.07. The cyclic voltammogram showed that a reversible reduction wave appeared at -0.84 V in pH 5.0 buffer solution, which is assigned as the Cr-III/II redox couple. The oxidation formal potentials were obtained by spectroelectrochemistry. With suitable control of the oxidation potentials and solution conditions, the high valent oxo-Cr-1V and oxo-Cr-v porphyrins were obtained. The ligand trans to the oxygen atom is either H2O or OH-, depending on the pH of the solution. In this paper, oxo-(CrTF)-T-v (4)TMAP is thus the first reported water-soluble Cr-v porphyrin that can be generated electrochemically and chemically. Electrogenerated oxo-Cr-v porphyrin species catalyzed the oxidation of cyclopent-2-ene-1-acetic acid to cyclopent-2-ene-4-one-1-acetic acid in the presence of dioxygen and returned to oxo-Cr-1v porphyrin, which is not reactive toward the substrate. Resource Commitment, Organizational Diversity, and Research Performance: A Case of the National Telecommunication Program in Taiwan
[[abstract]]Traditionally, a project team's resource commitment and organizational diversity are thought to be helpful to project performance; however, this relationship may falter when the project performance is considered in light of both cost and benefit. This paper integrates data envelopment analysis (DEA) and analytical hierarchy process (AHP) to evaluate project performance and explores the relationship between project performance and resource commitment and organizational diversity. The empirical study of research teams in the Taiwan National Telecommunication Program shows mixed results of this relationship. Implications for project management and governmental subsidy policy in dealing with resource commitment and organizational diversity are discussed.[[note]]SSC
Innovations and communication through innovative users: An exploratory mechanism of social networking website
[[abstract]]The study focuses on which users to target and why and how to inspire their participation by applying combination of von Hippel's lead user and user innovation toolkits with Rogers' innovation diffusion theories. After an investigation of a social networking website, this study finds that individuals with large number of hits are highly active users of new functions. Moreover, they are likely to use toolkits to customize their personal uses and respond to others' problems. Therefore, they garner appreciation from others in return, achieve higher ranks in the top hit parade, and obtain better-expected benefits from the website's incentive compensation. This study also evaluates the toolkits' efficacy in the Web 2.0 context and finds that they are not equivalents. This research offers insights useful for web service providers to target innovative users and create an environment using web toolkits to induce user-generated innovation and achieve better effect of innovation communication. Evaluating a national science and technology program using the human capital and relational asset perspectives
[[abstract]]The purpose of this research is to evaluate the performance of the National Science and Technology Program (NSTP) by targeting the Taiwan National Telecommunication Program (NIP) initiated in 1998. The Taiwan telecommunications industry has prospered, currently occupying key positions in global markets even though NTP seldom contributes positively to patent citation performance. Hence, the authors of this study investigate the qualitative perspective of intellectual capital rather than quantitative technological indices. The current study focuses on both human capital and relational assets through surveys of 53 principal investigators of NTP projects and 63 industrial R&D managers of telecommunications corporations in the Taiwan market. Results show that NSTP member quality and the flow of employment are good indicators of human capital and that both perform better than the middle value in the case of Taiwan NTP. In addition, we find that industrial participants are more likely to share R&D resources than other academic researchers with higher intention of co-publishing, co-funding, and sharing equipments and facilities. The industrial NTP participants also have higher expectations regarding achieving advanced technology breakthroughs in contrast to non-NIP industrial interviewees. Moreover, industrial participants with greater industry-university cooperation intensity indeed obtain a particular advantage, that is, greater knowledge acquisition from other fields related to the effect of knowledge spillovers through the particular NSTP linkage. Accordingly, from the perspectives of human capital and relational assets, the authors conclude by articulating the importance of absorptive capacity resulting from good human capital and knowledge spillover contributed by relational assets within governmental technology policy and NSTP programming. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
