Applying user modeling to human-computer interaction design
Since the early 1980's, intelligent and adaptive systems have appeared and have been written about in a variety of guises. Although there are many differences between such systems as adaptive user interfaces, intelligent help systems and explanation systems, there are many similarities as well. The most notable of these is that they all require user models to be maintained and exploited as part of their designs. Furthermore, they share the same high level architecture. This paper discusses the use of models in human-computer interaction design and offers a common architecture for these adaptive systems. A methodology for the development of these systems is presented
Human-Computer Interaction design for emerging technologies: Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality and Mobile Computer Systems
Abstract: This thesis deals with interaction design for a class of upcoming computer technologies for human use characterized by being different from traditional desktop computers in their physical appearance and the contexts in which they are used. These are typically referred to as emerging technologies. Emerging technologies often imply interaction dissimilar from how computers are usually operated. This challenges the scope and applicability of existing knowledge about human-computer interaction design. The thesis focuses on three specific technologies: virtual reality, augmented reality and mobile computer systems. For these technologies, five themes are addressed: current focus of research, concepts, interaction styles, methods and tools. These themes inform three research questions, which guide the conducted research. The thesis consists of five published research papers and a summary. In the summary, current focus of research is addressed from the perspective of research methods and research purpose. Furthermore, the notions of human-computer interaction design and emerging technologies are discussed and two central distinctions are introduced. Firstly, interaction design is divided into two categories with focus on systems and processes respectively
Interpretations of Sustainability in the Field of Human-Computer Interaction Design: a Systematic Review
Focusing in the importance of the sustainability discourse in the field of design, this qualitative study reviews how Human-Computer Interaction designers have addressed sustainability issues in their written works. For this, a structured textual analysis was used in order to filter out the main ideas related to key elements when constructing formal conceptions of sustainable development. The results show which elements have been determinant in these discourses but also how influential are these for the actual outcomes in design. Finally, the discussion gathers around the possibilities to strengthen this discourse as well as opening new directions for Human-Computer Interaction design
A Design Case Featuring the Graduate Design Studio at Indiana University Bloomington’s Human-Computer Interaction Design Program
In this article the author illustrates the design of a physical space that was created to serve as a performance intervention for graduate students in the Human-Computer Interaction Design (HCId) program in the School of Informatics, Indiana University Bloomington. Opened in Fall 2010, the HCId Graduate Design Studio was designed to help facilitate collaboration between students and faculty in the HCId Program. An effort was made to document the Studio and students working in the Studio over an extended period of time. The author visited the Design Studio a minimum of ten times between late January and late April 2011. Visits were conducted on different days of the week (Monday - Friday) and at different times of the day to capture a variety of students and activity level in the Studio. In order to gain a perspective on the two distinct groups of students who utilize the Studio, interviews of graduate students from both the HCId Master of Science and Doctoral program were conducted. In addition interviews were conducted of two other important stakeholders, the HCId Program Director and the Director of Facilities for the School of Informatics, both of whom were heavily involved in the design of the Studio. Through faculty and student interviews, text descriptions, photographs, and audio and video recordings this article addresses the design features and their impact, both successful and unsuccessful, on student and faculty collaboration of the HCId Graduate Design Studio
