Islam and the everyday world: public policy dilemmas. Edited by Sohrab Behdad and Farhad Nomani (Abingdon: Routledge, 2006), 240 pp. Price HB £70.00. ISBN 0–415–36823–5
Reference materials related to public policy discourse within an Islamic framework are very scarce and the prospect of reviewing a book with this title was very enthusiastically awaited. According to the editors, this volume contains eight updated and revised articles, chosen from contributions written originally for a special issue (1997) of International Journal Review of Comparative Public Policy, and covers areas of economics, human rights, family law, labour law, commercial law, public finance and banking. The introductory article by Behdad places the themes within the context of contemporary Islamic revivalism. He begins by stating how contrasting interpretations of Islam, as represented by two visions of Islamic ideology and their implications for public policy can be traced to the time of the Prophet. Using a Shariati-like approach, Behdad categorizes these visions as one of rebellion vs. order, one that represents a vision of a monotheistic classless society vs. one that represents Islamic capitalism. He uses this division to take the readers through his interpretations of siyāsa or public policy in Islamic history by discussing issues of prices, markets, public interest (maṣlaḥa), the reform movements at the turn of the twentieth century to the Islamic revolution in Iran. Maybe true to his own vision, the author laments how the rebellious, classless vision of Abū Dharr has always been countered by a class based ‘Pax Islamica’. It is this dynamic that, the author contends, needs to be studied by those who want to present Islam as a social order, having public policy dimensions and which forms the discussions of the other authors in this volume
The Analysis of the Basics of Gerard Genette’s Intertextuality in Farhad Hassanzadeh's The Bambak Ship’s Scorpions for Young Adults
The study of relationships between texts is one of the approaches to the study of literary works through which important information can be obtained from the text. Among the various literary theories that have dealt with the relationship between texts, transtextuality analyzes the text in this respect. This theory was first proposed by Gerard Genette, a French theorist and structuralist. Transtextuality has five forms: Paratextuality, intertextuality, architextuality, metatextuality, and hypertextuality, and includes an extensive study of relationships of a text with its para-elements, previous or contemporary texts, texts that have criticized and interpreted and have taken a step towards confirming or denying it; moreover, it includes the relationship of a text to the genre or genres in which the text is formed, and finally to the texts from which the text is taken. Farhad Hassanzadeh is a prolific writer with a specific style in children and young adult literature who has over 80 works on various subjects. He has received numerous national and international awards. Among his important and famous works, we can mention This Weblog Is Being Turned Over, Namaki And the Spectacled Snake, The Moonlight Guest, Call me Ziba, etc. This study intends to read Farhad Hassanzadeh's The Bambak Ship’s Scorpions through intertextuality which is one of the five forms of transtextuality and to identify the pretexts of interest to the author. In the following, it will be clear that the author has chosen the pretexts of the work purposefully and these pretexts have been effective in selecting some elements of the story. The author has also taken special care in using pretexts of popular culture such as proverbs and allusions, popular songs of the time, and slogans of the revolution. For this reason, the presence of this pretext in the work has a high frequency
Application of seismic surface-waves in concrete bridge-deck evaluation
Accurate and timely condition assessment of bridge decks is essential for economic management of aging highway bridges. The ability to evaluate concrete modulus profile in a bridge deck can help the detection of early signs of deterioration and optimize the bridge maintenance procedures. This study presents a new method for modulus profiling of concrete bridge decks. The stiffness matrix method is used to simulate wave propagation in a layered media. The results are compared to numerical finite element models. Dispersion analysis is done using the multi-channel analysis of surface waves (MASW) and phase-shift methods. The characteristics of dispersion surface are analyzed and the effects of model parameters on dispersion surface are examined through a series of parametric studies. An inversion technique is proposed for a fast inversion of surface-wave data collected on bridge decks. This technique utilizes a database of pre-calculated dispersion surfaces and takes advantage of the observed patterns in the parametric study as a priori information for the inversion process.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical referencesby Farhad Fetra
Violence in so-called troublesome neighbourhoods occurs within a particular context, marked by geographical segregation, stigmatisation based on ethnic origin and economic and social exclusion. When mixed, these factors produce forms of violence which express themselves according to gender roles (girls' behaviours are quite different from those of boys), but also relate to local historical and cultural contexts, and have turned partly ideological with the growing islamisation of the 1990s. The author shows the significance of the links between neighbourhood, city and even region as they interplay in a mirror game where each one's identity is a function of their reciprocal perception, as well as of the feeling of indignity of those left by society on the side of the road. Their sense of victimisation acquires a particular significance.Khosrokhavar Farhad. In: Déviance et société. 2000 - Vol. 24 - N°4.
