Size dependent carrier recombination in ZnO nanocrystals
Experimental and theoretical studies of fluorescence decay were performed for colloidal ZnO nanocrystals. The fluorescence lifetime reduces from 22 ps to similar to 6 ps with decreasing nanocrystal radius. We postulate that non-radiative surface states dominate the carrier dynamics in small ZnO nanocrystals and perform Monte Carlo simulations incorporating carrier diffusion and carrier recombination to model the experimental fluorescence decay dynamics. The percentage of excitons undergoing nonradiative decay due to surface trapping is as high as 84% for nanocrystals with 8 nm radius, which explains the ultrafast decay dynamics observed in small ZnO nanostructures even at low temperatures.Original Publication:Galia Pozina, Li-Li Yang, Qingxiang Zhao, Lars Hultman and P G Lagoudakis, Size dependent carrier recombination in ZnO nanocrystals, 2010, APPLIED PHYSICS LETTERS, (97), 13, 131909.http://dx.doi.org/10.1063/1.3494535Copyright: American Institute of Physicshttp://www.aip.org
Interpretation of electron diffraction patterns from amorphous and fullerene-like carbon allotropes
The short range order in amorphous and fullerene-like carbon compounds has been characterized by selected area electron diffraction (SAED) patterns and compared with simulations of model nanoclusters. Broad rings in SAED pattern from fullerene-like CNx at similar to 1.2, similar to 2, and similar to 3.5 angstrom indicate short-range order similar to that in graphite, but peak shifts indicate sheet curvature in agreement with high-resolution transmission electron microscopy images. Fullerene-like CPx exhibits rings at similar to 1.6 and 2.6 angstrom, which can be explained if it consists of fragments with short-range order and high curvature similar to that of C-20.Original Publication:Zsolt Czigany and Lars Hultman, Interpretation of electron diffraction patterns from amorphous and fullerene-like carbon allotropes, 2010, Ultramicroscopy, (110), 7, 815-819.http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.ultramic.2010.02.005Copyright: Elsevier Science B.V., Amsterdam.http://www.elsevier.com

Author Functions in Lars Kepler\u27s The Hypnotist: An Analysis
This paper examines Foucault\u27s notion of the author function as it pertains to Lars Kepler\u27s bestselling 2011 crime thriller, The Hypnotist. Lars Kepler is the pseudonym of a Swedish husband-wife writing duo, making him the perfect subject for analysis centering on illusory notion of the author. This paper will answer these questions: Who is the true author of The Hypnotist? What factors influence the author function of this bestelling novel? And what can The Hypnotist phenomenon tell us about the relationships between authors and their readers? This paper will demonstrate that no literary works may be ascribed to an individual person, and that authors hold no privileged knowledge of the works they produce, because authors cease to be authors the moment pen is lifted from page
Pressure enhancement of the isostructural cubic decomposition in Ti1−xAlxN
The influence of pressure on the phase stabilities of Ti1−xAlxN solid solutions has been studied using first principles calculations. We find that the application of hydrostatic pressure enhances the tendency for isostructural decomposition, including spinodal decomposition. The effect originates in the gradual pressure stabilization of cubic AlN with respect to the wurtzite structure and an increased isostructural cubic mixing enthalpy with increased pressure. The influence is sufficiently strong in the composition-temperature interval corresponding to a shoulder of the spinodal line that it could impact the stability of the material at pressures achievable in the tool-work piece contact during cutting operationsOriginal Publication:Björn Alling, Magnus Odén, Lars Hultman and Igor Abrikosov, Pressure enhancement of the isostructural cubic decomposition in Ti1-xAlxN, 2009, Applied Physics Letters, (95), 181906.http://dx.doi.org/10.1063/1.3256196Copyright: American Institute of Physicshttp://www.aip.org
Fullerene-like CSx: A first-principles study of synthetic growth
Fullerene-Like (FL) Sulpho-Carbide (CSx) compounds have been addressed by first principles calculations. Geometry optimization and cohesive energy results are presented for the relative stability of precursor species such as C2S, CS2, and C2S2 in isolated form. The energy cost for structural defects, arising from the substitution of C by S is also reported. Similar to previously synthesized FL-CNx and FL-CPx compounds, the pentagon, the double pentagon defects as well as the Stone-Wales defects are confirmed as energetically feasible in CSx compounds.Original Publication:Cecilia Goyenola, Gueorgui Kostov Gueorguiev, Sven Stafström and Lars Hultman, Fullerene-like CSx: A first-principles study of synthetic growth, 2011, CHEMICAL PHYSICS LETTERS, (506), 1-3, 86-91.http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.cplett.2011.02.059Copyright: Elsevier Science B.V., Amsterdam.http://www.elsevier.com
