Sodium chloride inhibits effective bubbly drag reduction in turbulent bubbly Taylor-Couette flows
Using the Taylor--Couette geometry we experimentally investigate the effect
of salt on drag reduction caused by bubbles present in the flow. We combine
torque measurements with optical high-speed imaging to relate the bubble size
to the drag experienced by the flow. Previous findings have shown that a small
percentage of air (4%) can lead to dramatic drag reduction (40%). In contrast
to previous laboratory experiments, which mainly used fresh water, we will vary
the salinity from fresh water to the average salinity of ocean water. We find
that the drag reduction is increasingly more inhibited for increasing salt
concentration; going from 40% for fresh water to just 15% for sea water. Salts
present in the working fluid inhibit coalescence events, resulting in smaller
bubbles in the flow and with that, decreasing the drag reduction. Above a
critical salinity, increasing the salinity has no further effect on the bubble
sizes in the flow and thus the drag experienced by the flow. Our new findings
demonstrate the importance of NaCl on the bubbly drag reduction mechanism, and
will further challenge the naval architects to implement promising air

In this paper, Viktor Pelevin's novel Empire V (2006) is analysed, with its main concern with the status of language, in fiction as well as in contemporary Russian culture. The work is seen as a kind of sequel to Generation 17: whereas that novel predominantly focused on the problem of consciousness, its problematical relation with reality, but expressed this problem in language, in Empire V the problem of language as the form of consciousness is foregrounded; inevitably thus the status of the text we are reading and the relation it has to its author is problematized - as is the relation it has to its reader. It is a text that reflects on what language, its material, does. The possibility is suggested that this novel tries to rind a way out of postmodernism's anxieties about the conscious personality being an illusion, created by his own language.</p

Progress in the increasingly developing field of technology is an aspect of knowledge and technology that requires higher education to be able to increase their ability to master technology. The purpose of converting energy to machines is to help make human work easier. Plywood/wood cutting machine saw from manual becomes a useful machine for Bengkalis State Polytechnic students. The objectives are 1. To make it easier for the user when cutting plywood, 2. To find out the design process for the bandsaw machine frame and belt sander, 3. To know the planning procedures for the bandsaw machine frame design and belt sander. Study literature used by the author by looking for references related to design to create a project.
In this process, the authors designed a bandsaw and belt sander frame design where the design will be designed in such a way and function as a reference in the process of making the tool, this tool uses an unp iron frame 80 x 45 x 5 mm and hollow iron 30 x 30 x 1.8 mm by using a 1-phase electric motor and also using 2 wheels. This bandsaw saw machine is for cutting plywood and wood of small and large sizes. Belt sander for the sanding process after cutting which is a design with a scale of 1:100.

Settling behaviour of thin curved particles in quiescent fluid and turbulence
The motion of thin curved falling particles is ubiquitous in both nature and industry but is not yet widely examined. Here, we describe an experimental study on the dynamics of thin cylindrical shells resembling broken bottle fragments settling through quiescent fluid and homogeneous anisotropic turbulence. The particles have Archimedes numbers based on the mean descent velocity 0.75×104≲Ar≲2.75×104. Turbulence reaching a Reynolds number of Reλ≈100 is generated in a water tank using random jet arrays mounted in a coplanar configuration. After the flow becomes statistically stationary, a particle is released and its three-dimensional motion is recorded using two orthogonally positioned high-speed cameras. We propose a simple pendulum model that accurately captures the velocity fluctuations of the particles in still fluid and find that differences in the falling style might be explained by a closer alignment between the particle's pitch angle and its velocity vector. By comparing the trajectories under background turbulence with the quiescent fluid cases, we measure a decrease in the mean descent velocity in turbulence for the conditions tested. We also study the secondary motion of the particles and identify descent events that are unique to turbulence such as ‘long gliding’ and ‘rapid rotation’ events. Lastly, we show an increase in the radial dispersion of the particles under background turbulence and correlate the time scale of descent events with the local settling velocity
Drag reduction in boiling Taylor-Couette turbulence
We create a highly controlled laboratory environment - accessible to both global and local monitoring - to analyse turbulent boiling flows and in particular their shear stress in a statistically stationary state. By precisely monitoring the drag of strongly turbulent Taylor-Couette flow (the flow in between two coaxially rotating cylinders, Reynolds number Re approximate to 10(6)) during its transition from non-boiling to boiling, we show that the intuitive expectation, namely that a few volume per cent of vapour bubbles would correspondingly change the global drag by a few per cent, is wrong. Rather, we find that for these conditions a dramatic global drag reduction of up to 45% occurs. We connect this global result to our local observations, showing that for major drag reduction the vapour bubble deformability is crucial, corresponding to Weber numbers larger than one. We compare our findings with those for turbulent flows with gas bubbles, which obey very different physics from those of vapour bubbles. Nonetheless, we find remarkable similarities and explain these
