British Cultural Studies, Active Audiences and the Status of Cultural Theory : An Interview With David Morley
No full text British cultural studies, represented perhaps chiefly by the so-called Birmingham School, is much marked by its strong orientation towards the application of grounded theory in the analysis of concrete cases, rather than the development of abstract Theory with a Capital T (in Stuart Hall’s words). As a leading figure of the Birmingham School and a key representative of the active audience model in television studies, or broadly, media studies, David Morley stands at a point where this trend was set, as is evidenced in this interview. Questioned by Huimin Jin, Morley puts his audience studies into the contexts of British cultural studies, postmodernism, Marxism, social movements, and so on; and in doing so, he shows the ambiguity, and subtlety of his concepts of how to best theorize the active audience. Only by this method, Jin believes, could Morley launch his version of audience studies, which aims not to invent a general theory of media effects, but to use an interdisciplinary range of theories to explore how people actually respond to a TV programme; and only by this approach to audience studies, furthermore, could Morley develop a theory of the audience’s activity, which is embedded in the course of their everyday life and that cannot be thoroughly colonized by discourses. Cultural studies, wherever it is conducted, therefore, Morley suggests, has to construct modes of analysis that are relevant to its own conditions of production in a particular place, at a particular time. This is the tradition, as we know it, but also the future, as Morley envisages, of cultural studies. </jats:p
Collaborative governance to manage risks in inclusive health insurance:A case study of Huimin Bao in China
Get PDFCan private health insurance ensure equal access to healthcare for individuals and offer generous benefits at an affordable price? The conventional answer is no. But in the case of Huimin Bao, an inclusive commercial health insurance scheme in China, this is now possible due to the collaborative governance between the local governments and insurance companies. This kind of collaboration is acting as an innovative solution to deal with the risks that Huimin Bao is facing. In practice, their collaboration covers various dimensions. These range from instances where the local governments only provide support for the collaboration, to instances where they guide, promote, and even lead the collaboration. We argue that if government intervention is designed to promote rather than stifle private insurers' self-protection and innovation, collaborative governance in Huimin Bao may better reconcile public policy aims with economic goals. Nevertheless, the utilization of such innovative governance instruments may still face potential risks arising from alignment of interests, distortion of market competition, and regulatory oversight, undermining the solvency and sustainability of Huimin Bao

Formation Mechanisms of Paleogene Igneous Rock Plays in Huimin Sag, Eastern China
No full text In order to understand the impact of volcanism and intrusion on the source rocks, how the pores and fissures formed and how the hydrocarbon was trapped, this study focuses on the formation mechanisms of the igneous rock plays in the Huimin Sag based on geochemical and lithological analyses and typical anatomy. The results indicate that volcanism enhanced the formation of Es3 source rocks with high TOC (3.41–5.12%) in the distribution areas of igneous rocks. Volcanism caused an abnormal heat field and accelerated the maturation of hydrocarbon source rocks, leading to a higher heat gradient (3.4–4.4 °C /100 m), increase of HC and chloroform bitumen “A” contents, earlier hydrocarbon generation threshold and higher biomarker maturity closer to the igneous rocks. The primary fractures, vesicular structures, inter-breccia pores, intergranular pores, intercrystal and intracrystal pores are primarily-formed. The structural fractures and corrosion space are secondarily formed. Rising fluid pressure associated with volcanism accelerated the hydrocarbons expulsion. Igneous body can act as a migration pathway or a seal constrained by its physical property. Volcanism in the Huimin Sag produces diaper arch trap, overlap trap in volcano slope and drape anticline trap on the volcanic cone. Five models for igneous rocks plays in the Huimin Sag, such as volcaniclastic play with outside source rocks, diabase plays with interior and exterior source rocks, basalt plays with exterior and mixed source rocks are proposed. </jats:p
