    Cutting and grabbing simulation of laparoscopic cholecystectomy in dekstop environment / Die Hui Hui

    Virtual reality (VR) can be considered as the use of various computer graphics systems in combination with various displays and interface devices to provide the effect of immersion in an interactive three-dimensional computer-generated environment. The interaction between the user and the virtual environment is basically limited to the three sensory modalities of vision, tactile sensing and audio. VR has led to many researches for many years, to improve the technologies especially in medical surgical training simulation.The main objective of this research project is to develop a simple surgical training simulation on laparoscopic cholecystectomy by using the low end PC-based system. The software system was developed by “WorldToolKit” from Sense 8 Corporation in order to allow a surgeon to perform surgical training. This simulation concerns on the manipulation of the surgical tools to perform the basic techniques such as cutting and grabbing on the cystic duct at the gallbladder. Besides that, collision management also becomes a main concern in this project. In order to prove the validity of the system, it was tested on the collision detection and collision response between the virtual tools and the skin of the cystic duct. This response includes the visual and audio feedback and message prompt to acknowledge the user regarding the current status of the simulation. Method for grabbing and cutting also had been discussed in this project. Finally, this research also includes the testing on the effect of the complexity of the environment to the smoothes of the tool’s movement. Besides, the comparison between existing cutting method and new method had been analyzed. Conclusion is provided based on the result produced. Deficiencies and future enhancements of the system also had been discussed to improve the features of virtual surgical environment especially on the complexity of the fulcrum effect and force feedback on the simulation

Because the research studies could not control how many times that a station was observed, some of the stations were observed only once, while other stations were observed more than once. The station, “Water! Science Museum” was observed the most frequently, a total of sixteen times by sixteen different observers. The stations observed once by the sixteen observers are: “Well,Well,Well”, “DisappearingWaterfall Mystery”, “Streams Creatures”, “Lakes & Rivers & Oceans-Ohmy”, “BackyardWater Recycling”, and “Groundwater on the Move.” The following stations were not observed at all: “Water!Water!     Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Experimental investigation of the transverse nonlinear vibration of an axially travelling belt

    From an experimental perspective, this paper investigates the transverse vibrationpresent in an axially travelling belt undergoing uniform motion with constant travelling speed.Application of a control of the belt speed, using Matlab, a Code Composer Studio (CCS) and theavailable complementary embedded tools, a stepper motor DSP control was obtainedautomatically by using a graphical method to establish the stepper motor movement models withina Simulink environment. By changing the tension of the belt and the rotational speed of the steppermotor, the natural frequency of the travelling belt was studied. The response waveforms, spectralcontent and phase diagrams were obtained by measuring the transverse vibration displacementunder different conditions. A nonlinear model for the experimental moving belt system wasdeveloped and numerical solutions calculated. Subsequently, the nonlinear response behavior ofthis model were validated by the results of the experiment. It was shown that there were manyscenarios for which the system can exhibit periodic motion, chaotic motion and beat frequencyphenomena to be present and measured in the vibration of the axially travelling belt

    Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
