A comparative analysis of Le Noeud De Viperes by Francois Mauriac and Le Journal D'un Cure De Campagne by Georges Bernanos, 1970
The principal aim of the paper is to analyze one novel by Francois Mauriac, and one by Georges Bernanos. After analyzing the novels, the writer desires to compare the character development, the plot, the style and the themes of each novel. The results should reveal certain similarities and differences in each of the novels studied. The study consists of four chapters. Chapter one, the introduction, is devoted to a presentation of the social, cultural and political milieu in which Mauriac and Bernanos lived. It includes a brief biographical sketch of each author. An analysis of Le Noeud de Viperes is given in Chapter two, and in Chapter three, an analysis of Le Journal D'un cure de Campagne is presented. The fourth chapter is the major pare of the study. In this chapter, the writer seeks to compare the similarities and differences of the novels under consideration. It is observed that Mauriac and Bernanos used religious hypocricy, marital or family discord, pride and avarice as a basis to discuss sin and evil in the society of their times. While the major themes in these novels are similar, the main characters are different. Further comparisons disclose differences in the portrayal of minor characters in the development of the plots and in style. Selected passages are quoted where feasible to verify the similarities or dissimilarities stated. The conclusion is that Le Noeud De Viperes and Le Journal D'un Cure De Campagne represent personal manifestations of disquietude or apprehensiveness about the social, economic, and religious climate surrounding the lives of the authors

Stephane Mallarme: A synthesis of romanticism and parnassianism, 1970
The purpose of this paper is to analyse works of Stephane Mallarme, father of Symbolism, pointing out romantic and parnassian elements. Symbolism, like Romanticism, attempted to express the interior thoughts of man. The symbolist movement then, was not only a revolt against Parnassianism but also a return to Romanticism. On the other hand, one would not be incorrect in saying that Romanticism reached its culmination in the works of the symbolists poets. For this reason, an attempt will be made to show that the works of Mallarme, father of Symbolism, can be considered as a synthesis of Romanticism and Parnassianism. This thesis contains three chapters. The first chapter is devoted to a discussion of Romanticism and of Parnassianism. Special attention is given to the origin, development, characteristics and influences of each school. The relationship of one School with the other is also pointed out. The second chapter consists of a biographical sketch of Stephane Mallarme. Special emphasis is placed on factors and events in his life which may have influenced or determined the elements of Romanticism and Parnassianism in his poetry. The third chapter is devoted to an analysis of some of the poems of Stephane Mallarme", "Les Fenetres," V Apparition," "L'Azur," "Toast Funebre," "Le Vierge," "L'Apres-Midi d'un Faune." In these analyses special attention is given to the romantic and parnassian tendencies of the poems. Since these romantic-parnaassian elements occur frequently throughout his works, it has been concluded that Mallarme's poetry can be considered as a synthesis of the two poetic schools
A study of the theme "the refusal to accept reality" as portrayed by female characters in three plays by Jean Anouilh, 1967
Jean Anouilh's favorite theme, "the refusal to accept reality" has been stated by most of his critics to be the dominant theme in his pieces noires. This thesis is an attempt to show that this theme of revolt is also dominant in some of his pieces roses and pieces brillantes. The writer points this out through critical analyses of three plays each representative of Anouilh's three groups of plays. Definitions of the theme, "the refusal to accept reality" and how it reflects the personal ideas of a contemporary French playwright are also pointed out in this thesis. There is an attempt to show how Anouilh has created female characters as main illustrators of the theme in question. The writer gives a critical analysis of each female character who illustrates the theme. Eniphasis is placed on the author's development of these characters in relation to their portrayal of the theme. It is also pointed out in this thesis that some minor themes are interwoven into the dominant theme of each play. It is through these minor themes that one recognizes the moralistic tendencies of Anouilh. These minor themes reflect the ideas of a moralist, a perfectionist, and an individual deeply concerned with man1 s conditions and destiny. The chapter headings reveal the sequence of the contents: I. Introduction or Background Information II. Critical Analysis of Antigone, Le Bal Des Voleurs and LInvitation au Chateau with Emphasis on the Development of the Theme III. Analysis and Comparison of Female Characters through which the Theme is Illustrated IV. The Relationship of the Principal Theme with Certain Minor Themes in the Three Play
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
