Automated Non-Invasive Basal-Cell Carcinoma Detection by Convolutional Neural Network

Diagnosis of basal cell carcinoma (BCC), the most common skin cancer, is made by histologic examination traditionally. Yet the process is invasive and time-consuming. In vivo imaging modalities such as harmonic generation microscopy (HGM) was therefore developed for noninvasive diagnosis of BCC. However the images acquired by HGM are too many for physicians to interpret manually. Thus, in this paper we focus on detecting features of BCC automatically by customizing compact and efficient convolutional neural network (CNN) models on HGM images of BCC. Our best model achieves a better result than AlexNet cite{krizhevsky2012imagenet}, while using less than its 1\% number of parameters. The study indicated the potential solution of using customized CNN to detect the features in similar imaging modalities

Mass transport induced by pulsatile electroosmotic flows in a two-dimensional microchannel is studied theoretically herein. With the assumptions of non-overlapping electrical double layers, linearized electrical potentials, streamwise fully-developed incompressible flows, and an infinitely dilute solution of neutral species, the governing equations for the electrical potential, the velocity field, and the species concentration distribution are solved analytically. The results indicate that the velocity and concentration distributions across the channel become more and more non-uniform as the Womersley number , or the oscillation frequency, increases. Results also reveal that, with a constant tidal displacement, the averaged mass transport rate increases with the Womersley number due to both the stronger convective and transverse dispersion effects. The averaged mass transport rate also increases with an increasing tidal displacement because of the associated stronger convective effects. The cross-over phenomenon of the mass transport rates for different species becomes possible with sufficiently large Debye lengths and at sufficiently high values of . As a result, with proper choices of the Debye length, oscillation frequency, and tidal displacement, pulsatile electroosmotic flow may become a good candidate for the first-step separation of the mass species.Table of Contents Chinese Abstract……………………………………………………i English Abstract………………………………………………….ii Acknowledgement and Dedication.........................iv Table of Contents………………………………………….…… ix Table Captions……………………………………………………..x Figure Captions……………………….………………….......xi Nomenclature...…………………….………………………….xiii Chapter 1: Introduction………………………………….……..1 Chapter 2: Assumptions, Nondimensionalization, and Formulation……………...................................5 (a) Electrical Field...………………………………….5 (b) Velocity Field………………………………………..7 (c) Concentration Field……………………………….…9 Chapter 3: Mathematical Solutions………………….……….13 (a) Electrical Field...……………………………………...13 (b) Velocity Field………………………………………………13 (c) The Lagrangian Displacement and Tidal Displacement…………...................................15 (d) Concentration Field…………….………………………..16 (e) The Time and Space Averaged Mass Transfer Rate……………….......................................18 Chapter 4: Results and Discussion……………………………21 (a) Limitation on Constant Tidal Displacement due to Power Input…..........................................21 (b) The Velocity Profile…….………………………...22 (c) The Convective Concentration Distribution…….23 (d) The Time/Space Averaged Mass Transport………..25 (e) Cross-Over Phenomenon and Separation of Species................................................27 Chapter 5: Concluding Remarks and Future Works.………..30 References………………………………………………………...32 Tables……………………………………………………………...34 Figures.…………………………………………………………….3

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
