Apophatic Elements in the Theory and Practice of Psychoanalysis: Pseudo-Dionysius and C.G. Jung

    No full text
This thesis identifies apophatic elements in the theory and practice of psychoanalysis through an examination of Pseudo-Dionysius and C.G. Jung. Pseudo-Dionysius brought together Greek and Biblical currents of negative theology and the via negativa. The apophatic concepts and metaphors which appear in the work of Pseudo-Dionysius are identified. The psychology of Jung can be read as a continuation and extension of the apophatic tradition. The presence of neoplatonic themes in Jung’s work is discussed, as well as his references to Pseudo-Dionysius. There is a thorough examination of Jung’s discussion of opposites, including his reception of Nicholas of Cusa’s concept of the coincidence of opposites. The role of the transcendent function in Jung’s psychology is reviewed. The work of contemporary scholars of religion, philosophers and Jungian theorists are compared to Jung’s using the lens of apophasis. There is an exploration of ways in which motifs in Pseudo-Dionysius’ Ecclesiatical Hierarchy resonate with contemporary psychoanalytic psychotherapy. This study demonstrates that apophatic motifs saturate Jung’s work. It provides a platform for research into apophasis in the wider field of psychoanalysis

Hélène Kiener. C.G. Jung and the theologians. (C.G. Jung et les théologiens.) This article is by one of the students of the psychologist C.G. Jung. She practised as a Jungian psychoanalyst in Strasbourg from 1946 to 1970. She deals here with the theological dimension, mostly implicit, of Jung's thouth, which is generally overlooked by theology. The author shows how the major theologians, who are the exception to the general rule, make room for Jungian anthropology, and she calls for a more open attitude in theology, because of the light thrown by Jung's thought on many theological statements.L'article qu'on lira est d'une élève du psychologue des profondeurs C. G. Jung. An Investigation of Transitional Phenomena from Laminar to Turbulent Natural Convection using Compressible Direct Numerical Simulation

    No full text
The transitional phenomena from laminar to turbulent natural convection and the development process inside the channel are investigated using compressible direct numerical simulation (DNS). Numerical method of Roe scheme with preconditioning and dual time stepping are used for addressing natural convection flows with large temperature differences, which are low speed but the densities are variable. The results are qualitatively well consistent with the experimental data [1] and the transition point can be accurately captured. In addition, the development process respected to time can be clearly identified for four stages, which are laminar, unstable process, reliminarization and turbulence. After reaching the quasi-steady state, it can be observed that the laminar, transition and turbulence coexist in the same flow filed. Most important of all, the transitional phenomena are naturally induced by the effects of interactions between the buoyancy and shear stress without adding any fluctuations at inlet. It means that the numerical scheme and physical model adopted in this study has the potential to be a universal case for estimating the accuracy of turbulence model because the characteristics of parameters-free and independence from inlet condition

The presoaked seed of rice variety Tainung 67 were treated with sodium azide for 2 time periods, 3 and 6 hrs, at 4 concentrations, 0.0, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0mM in a pH 3 potassium phosphate buffer solution for mutation breeding. Five related traits at M1 generation were observed, they were seminal root length, germination rate in greenhouse, seedling height, seedset rate and survival rate [percentage of plants that bore one or more seeds]. Except the seedling height on time periods of treatment, there existed a significantly negative correlation regression of all traits on the time duration and concentrations of treatment. The regressions of seminal root length and survival rate on the concentrations showed a quadratic nature, while other traits, respectively, showed a linear regression on the treated concentrations. The highest correlation was found between seminal root length and seedset rate of M1 generation. It is suggested to use a relatively short time period of treatment and to use the seminal root length and seed-set rate of M1 plant as the indicator to eveluate the mutagenic efficiency of sodium azide in rice mutation breeding

[[abstract]]The relationship between motion parameter of long jump and grade was investigated in this study. The results of the study could be useful to athletes and trainers to adjust the motions of long jump. The same squad of experimenters took the test of long jump at different times after training. The motions of the six experimenters were recorded by Peak high-speed camera with 120 HZ to analyze kinetics of the long jump. The experimenters are 23 years old, the average 176-centimeter height and the average 68-kilogram weight. All the tests were carried for three times. The two stages of initial two steps of approach and takeoff in the long jump were studied. We can make some conclusions as shown in below, 1.The experimenters with less variation on horizontal velocity got the higher grade. 2.The “Horizontal velocity of C.G.” and the “Vertical velocity of C.G.” are the most important two parameters for long jump. The experimenters had scope to improve in this study. 3.The experimenters showed slow angular velocity on hock that resulted from the weak pushing on feet. 4.The experimenters with more variation on height of body fulcrum in the stage of approach got the higher grade. 5.The higher grade can be got with the bigger angle of C.G. at takeoff. The other researchers suggested the Horizontal velocity of C. G. was the most important parameter for long jump. However, in this study, the Vertical velocity of C.G. and the variation on height of body fulcrum at takeoff showed more impact. The difference may be caused from the difference on velocity and brawn of the experimenters.

Poiesis and Obstruction in Art Practice

This PhD thesis examines the concept of poiesis, that is ‘calling into existence that which was not there before’, in the context of obstruction in studio practice. It poses the question ‘Is there a methodology that engages with obstruction which in turn calls new work’? In this thesis, the concept of poiesis emerging from the late Dr. Murray Cox’s ‘Aeolian Mode’, is analyzed alongside a concept of praxis, (a philosophical companion to poiesis), familiar to artistic practice. This thesis describes the orientation of the original idea, The Aeolian Mode, clinically developed by Dr. Murray Cox in Broadmoor Psychiatric Hospital. This PhD seeks to identify if there are similar ‘tenets of approach’ held within the methodology of ‘The Aeolian Mode’, that would be useful or are identifiable in artistic studio practice. This thesis draws on the work of the philosopher, Professor Richard Kearney, specifically Kearney’s ideas on the necessity of ‘the other’ for ‘radical possibility’ to occur. It maps a context of both Freudian and Jungian interpretations of art practice, identifying how these ideas have shaped the way art is seen today. Furthermore, it challenges the Freudian idea of ‘pathography’ and favours a Jungian approach of ‘individuation’ in the understanding of creative processes. It develops a ‘methodology of the conversation’, interviewing students, established artists, tutors about their approaches to obstruction/poiesis in art practice. Additionally, it examines my own obstruction to painting and identifies the methodology that released me from this obstruction. Conducting these interviews on art practice has enabled me to confirm my initial concerns about Freudian ‘pathography’ whilst validating the possibility of the Jungian concept of ‘individuation’ being of use to art practice. Finally, this PhD discusses the implications for further study and research, which have emerged during the ‘methodology of the conversation’ and the task of dissolving my obstruction to painting

[[abstract]]BIOMECHANICAL ANALYSIS OF JUDO HARAIGOSHI TECHNIQUE DURING THE KAKE Lin Shir Hsin Advisor:Huang Chen Fu ABSTRACT According to the techniques used by judoists in 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games and 1997 Judo Word Cup. Haraigoshi was one of most used techniques by different levels of judoist to win the game. However, although its basic skill does not change, the different movements will be developed according to the judoists body type, experiences, native intelligence, and coaching style. For this reason, the purpose of this study is to investigate the kinetics and kinematics differences when the position of support leg of thrower were at 60 degrees, 90 degrees, and 120 degrees with thrown. Eight judoists participated in this study. Two JVC 9800 digital cameras(60Hz) and one Kistler 9287(600Hz)force platform were used to collect the kinematic and kinetic data.. The results of this study were as followed: 1. The greater the support leg angles, the shorter the movement time. 2. No difference was found on thrown maximum center of gravity(C.G)velocity and thrower maximum C.G vertical displacement and maximum attack leg C.G velocity on different support leg angles. 3. The minimum angles of knee joint and the minimum body angle had significant difference between support leg at 90 degrees and 60 degrees. 4. Maximum vertical ground reaction force(GRF)of thrower was observed near 0.1 second after thrown both feet off ground. No difference on maximum GRF was found on three angles. 5. This study showed that the angle 90 degrees was the best angle between three position. Keyword:Judo、Biomechanics、Haraigoshi、Kinematics、Kinetics

Effects of Thermo-Mechanical Process on the Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Low Carbon HSLA Steels

    No full text
Effects of deformation at austenite region and cooling rate on the microstructure and mechanical properties of low carbon (0.06 wt. % C) high strength low alloy steels have been investigated. Average grain size decreased and polygonal ferrite transformation promoted with increasing deformation amount at austenite region due to increase of ferrite nucleation site. Microstructure was also influenced by cooling rate resulting in the development of a mixture of fine polygonal ferrite and acicular ferrite at 10 degrees C/s cooling rate. Discontinuous yielding occurred in highly deformed specimen due to the formation of polygonal ferrite. However, small grain size of highly deformed specimen caused lower ductile-to-brittle transition temperature than slightly deformed specimen.111sciescopu
