    Direct stratigraphic dating of India-Asia collision onset at the Selandian (middle Paleocene, 59+-1 Ma)

    The collision of India with Asia had a profound influence on Cenozoic topography, ocean- ography, climate, and faunal turnover. However, estimates of the time of the initial collision, when Indian continental crust arrived at the Transhimalayan trench, remain highly contro- versial. Here we use radiolarian and nannofossil biostratigraphy coupled with detrital zircon geochronology to constrain firmly the time when Asian-derived detritus was first deposited onto India in the classical Sangdanlin section of the central Himalaya, which preserves the best Paleocene stratigraphic record of the distal edge of the Indian continental rise. Deep- sea turbidites of quartzarenite composition and Indian provenance are replaced upsection by turbidites of volcano-plutoniclastic composition and Asian provenance. This sharp transition occurs above abyssal cherts yielding radiolaria of Paleogene radiolarian zones (RP) 4–6 and below abyssal cherts containing radiolaria of zone RP6 and calcareous shales with nannofos- sils of the Paleocene calcareous nannofossil zone (CNP) 7, constraining the age of collision onset to within the middle Paleocene (Selandian). The youngest U-Pb ages yielded by detri- tal zircons in the oldest Asia-derived turbidites indicate a maximum depositional age of 58.1 ± 0.9 Ma. Collision onset is thus mutually constrained by biostratigraphy and detrital zircon chronostratigraphy as 59 ± 1 Ma. This age is both more accurate and more precise than those previously obtained from the stratigraphic record of the northwestern Himalaya, and sug- gests that, within the resolution power of current methods, the India-Asia initial collision took place quasi-synchronously in the western and central Himalaya

    Abstract The timing of the initiation of the present‐day tectonic architecture and drainage systems in eastern China remains debated. This study presents a comprehensive provenance study of the Early Jurassic peripheral basins surrounding the Dabie orogen including framework petrography, heavy‐mineral analysis, single‐grain chronology and chemistry. Clasts of high‐grade schist, muscovite grains, rare gneissic fragments, abundant metamorphic garnet and phengite (Si > 3.3 pfu), combined with a main 216–256 Ma rutile U–Pb population found in these Early Jurassic sandstones, indicate a source from the Triassic (U)HP belt in the Dabie orogen. Sedimentary lithics and ultra‐stable heavy‐mineral assemblages indicate an additional source of recycled sedimentary rocks. Combined with the continuous shift of the youngest detrital rutile age population toward younger ages toward the north that mimics the pattern of metamorphic bedrock ages in the Dabie orogen, we infer that the present surface tectonic architecture and paleodrainage patterns of the Dabie orogen were established in the Early Jurassic. Thus, the Early Jurassic exhumation of the Dabie orogen marked the development of the watershed between Northern and Southern China, namely the Huai River and several principal tributary systems of the middle‐lower Yangtze River.National Natural Science Foundation of China https://doi.org/10.13039/50110000180

    Records of latest Triassic, mid-Cretaceous and Cenozoic uplift/exhumation phases in the Istanbul zone revealed by apatite fission-track and (U-Th)/He thermochronology

    Apatite fission-track and (U-Th)/He ages from Carboniferous to Eocene siliciclastic rocks of the Istanbul Zone (NW Turkey) range from 220 to 46 Ma, and from 46 to 18 Ma, respectively. Apatite grains from the upper Cretaceous and Eocene volcaniclastic and siliciclastic formations yielded unreset fission-track ages (85 to 65 Ma), whereas the Lower Cretaceous siliciclastic rocks yielded both reset and unreset apatite fission-track ages. This suggests the absence of substantial burial after the Early Cretaceous. The thermochronological dataset presented here in conjunction with published data defines three major deformation and uplift/exhumation phases: (i) 220-179 Ma (Late Triassic-Early Jurassic), (ii) 101-107 Ma (mid-Cretaceous), and (iii) 66-16 Ma (Palaeocene-early Miocene). The Late Triassic-Early Jurassic uplift/exhumation phase can be attributed to the Cimmeride orogeny and the uplift of the Pontides. The mid-Cretaceous uplift/deformation is also reflected in the stratigraphic record as a major unconformity, which was probably caused by the accretion of an oceanic plateau or a seamount. The Palaeocene-early Eocene uplift/deformations resulted from the closure of the Izmir-Ankara-Erzincan oceanic domain. The late Oligocene-early Miocene uplift/deformation is probably caused by extension in the Aegean region due to the suction along the Hellenic trench

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
