The poetry of Hsu Chih-Mo.
Hsu Chih-mo was an influential poet in China in 1920’s but his works have not been thoroughly studied either in or outside China. In this thesis the main features of Hsu's poetry are examined and attention is given to the influence he received from others and the impact of family life and social and political environment on his thoughts and works. His prose writings which supply valuable sources to the understanding of his poetry are often drawn upon.
Chapter I (Background) provides some basic information about the poet's life and the Chinese social and political conditions in his days. Chapters II (Woman), III (Love), IV (Revolution) and V (Religion) may be regarded as what the poet has to say and Chapter VI (Diction) and VII (Imagery), the ways he says them. On account of the scope of this paper, prosody, which requires extensive studies in the case of Hsu, is not treated as a separate topic, and in the last chapter (Conclusion), a brief summation and appreciation is given with emphasis on the role played by Hsu as an ever sincere and zealous promoter and experimenter of modern Chinese poetry ("new" poetry).Arts, Faculty ofAsian Studies, Department ofGraduat
Hsu Chih-mo, a literary biography.
This paper attempts to give a relatively accurate picture of Hsu Chih-mo's life with emphasis on the literary side as the title suggests. A generally chronological order is observed throughout the discussion. Chapter one covers the first period of Hsu's life, stressing his Cambridge days. Chapter two gives an account of Hsu's love life, literary works and activities in the first two to three years after he returned to Peking from abroad in 1922. Chapter three is a continuation of the previous one, up to the year 1926. Chapter four deals with Hsu's last years in Shanghai, with a special note on his disillusionment with love and life, and the final "revival" shortly before his death. Hsu is treated primarily as a poet rather than an essayist in this paper and his poetical works are examined separately in the relevant sections, i.e., chapters two, three and four. Some incidents and activities in Hsu's life are investigated in greater detail than others with a view to either (1): correcting erroneous or inaccurate impressions which have almost been perpetuated in both journalistic writings and even scholarly works concerning Hsu, or (2): demonstrating facts hitherto little known to the world so as to illustrate some important points which would otherwise remain unclear. Quite a number of Hsu's poems and articles, long forgotten or practically unknown because they have not been included in any of his collections, have been exhumed, and dozens of unpublished letters by him have been used in this biography

Frequency diversity can be further utilized when relayed transmission is employed. In this thesis, it is assumed that the channel state information (CSI) is known to the source. We aim to maximizehe weighted sum rate of OFDM relaying system under total power constraint by jointly optimizing subcarrier pairing in two consecutive time slots and power allocation on eachubcarrier in each time slot. We restrict that there is only one node transmitting on each subcarrier. Decode-and-forward (DF) strategy is considered when the relay is used. Besides, there are two types of transmissions when relay is not used, the difference is whether the source is permitted to transmit in the second time slot or not. First we formulate the problem as a mixed integer programming (MIP) problem which is NP-hard. Then we make continuous relaxation and solve the relaxed problem in dual domain by sub-gradient method. The relaxed problem is convex for one type and non-convex for the other type. Although one primal problem is convex, the constraint qualification is not satisfied. It means that the duality gaps for both types are not zero, and the dual optimal solution for each type provides an upper bound of the achievable rate. However, the duality gaps are virtually zero when the number of subcarriers goes to infinity. Thus we can achieve nearptimal solution.
