The political role of the people's liberation army 1949-1973
This thesis is to study the political role of the People's Liberation Army from the approach of structure and function. The framework of the thesis consists of three major parts, first, the influence of Chinese traditional political culture on, and the formation of, the political role of the PL A; second, the influence of domestic political struggles and external military conflicts on the development of the political role of the PLA; and the third, the analysis of the transition of the PLA's political role from the structure and personnel arrangements of the CCPCC Within the above-mentioned three scopes, this thesis make a thorough discussion on the following: (1) The relationship between the structure of the PRC and the formation of the PLA's political role; (2) How has ideology influenced the army's political role; (3) What is Mao's viewpoint and his influence on the development of the army's political role; (4) What is the link between the army and the party, and how has this developed; (6) What accounts for the expansion of the PLA's political functions; (7) What is the influence of political factional struggles on the PLA's political role; (8) Is it political institution or military institution that controls the recruitment of the military elite; (9) What are the disparities between the military elite in handling international conflicts and what are their political considerations; (10) What is the Party's position in the army; (11) How have the Party’s important meetings and personnel arrangements influenced the rise and fall of the PLA's political role

The Works in the lien-chu or "Strung pearls" form by Lu Chi and Yu Hsin--a comparative study
Yü Hsin 庾信 (513-581), who is generally regarded as the finest practitioner of belles-lettres in the late Six Dynasties, was quite good at writing pieces in the lien-chu 連珠 or "Strung pearl" form which had developed in the Han dynasty as a series of political aphorisms put together in paraller style. However, as some scholars remark, Yü Hsin's lien-chu works are fairly different from the traditional ones. This paper tries analyze this point, comparing Yü Hsin's work with works by Lu Chi 陸機 (261-303), the representative lien-chu writer before Yü Hsin. In the first place, the two poets definitely differ in their selection of topics. Yü Hsin in his lien-chu describes the history that he saw with his own eyes--the tragic history which started with Hou Ching's 侯景 revolt against the Liang government. And his main aim is to present his personal reactions to contemporary events. Lu Chi, on the other hand, deals with a topic more traditional in lien-chu work--the relationship between a man and his sovereign. In short, Yü Hsin's topic is of a more individual nature, while Lu Chi's is of a more universal nature. Next, this paper analyzes the structure of each style. In the case of Lu Chi, the sentences or words are arranged to distinguish the various aspects of the topic, while those of Yü Hsin are arranged to repeat the same aspects, which enables the latter's expression to be extremely effective. Finally, the difference both in the selection of topic and in the structure of the sentences results from the difference in the outlook on the world of the two poets. Lu Chi saw things from the traditional Confucianistic points of view, while Yü Hsin could not see things in a Confucianistic way any longer--he was an aesthete
Alignment Calibration of Doppler Velocity Log and Attitude Sensors
Precise positioning is essential for the success of undersea resource investigation, offshore oil drilling, pipeline laying and maintenance, and underwater rescue and recovery. Although the Doppler velocity log (DVL) system is quite effective for subsea navigation, it subjects to various potential sources of error such as alignment and travel times. With regard to the alignment error, it usually occurs in the installation of DVL and separate attitude sensors. The calibration of alignment between sensors is always a problem needed to be solved for precision navigation. To estimate the angular misalignments between the DVL and the attitude sensors, this study proposes a DVL positioning scheme for surge and sway motions. Then, mathematical representations of positioning error arising from heading, pitch, and roll misalignments are derived, respectively. The effect of each misalignment angle and how the differences can be used to calibrate each misalignment angle in turn are presented. An iterative algorithm that takes advantage of the geometry of position errors resulting from angular misalignments is developed for DVL calibration. Numerical simulations and experiments are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the iterative algorithm. The simulation and experimental results have shown that the estimates of alignment errors obtained at the first iteration are close to being correct. Moreover, only a few iterations are required to achieve very accurate solutions. Results in this study strongly support superiority of the proposed iterative algorithm which yields a very rapid and robust convergence of the solution series
The Teaching on Hsin and Discussion on Ch'i in the Four Chapters of the "Kuan-tzu"
While Lao-tzu in his discussion on tao gave evidence of un-preeedented originality, he did not make any contribution to the study of hsin. After the middle of the Warring States period, Chi-hsia Huang Lao daoism greatly promoted teachings and discussions on hsin and ch'i' thereby enriching ancient China's 'teachings of the inner sage'. Chi-hsia Huang Lao made the metaphysical tao concrete in the form of ching-ch'i, put it in relation to the human hsin and expressed the view that tao (ch'i) resides in the hsin ('the lodging of ching-she'). This article expounds on the teachings of hsin-hsing, hsin-ch'i and hsin-hsing and furthermore explains the teaching of ching-ch'i and the method of concentrating ch'i
