Homalenchodes Li, Hsiao, Yoshitomi & Cai 2022, gen. nov.
Genus Homalenchodes Li, Hsiao, Yoshitomi & Cai gen. nov. Type species. Homalenchodes jarzembowskii sp. nov. Etymology. The generic name is a combination of the Greek “ homalós ”, smooth, referring to the absence of longitudinal striae on its elytra, and “ Enchodes ”, a presumably closely related genus. The name is feminine in gender. The generic name Enchodes LeConte has been sometimes mistakenly treated as masculine (e. g., Jung, 2019). According to Article 30.1.4.4 of ICZN (1999), “a compound genus-group name ending in the suffix - ites, - oides, - ides, - odes, or - istes is to be treated as masculine unless its author, when establishing the name, … treated it as such by combining it with an adjectival species-group name in another gender form”. When establishing genus Enchodes, LeConte (1866) added a single previously described species, Dircaea sericea Haldeman, citing it as Enchodes sericea (Haldeman). Thus, the name should be feminine in gender. Diagnosis. Body relatively small, strongly elongate. Compound eyes coarsely facetted (Fig. 2A, B). Antennae long, filiform. Maxillary palps simple (Fig. 2A). Pronotum widest posteriorly, with somewhat produced posterior pronotal angles (Fig. 2B). Prosternal process complete, gradually narrowed posteriorly, slightly extending beyond posterior procoxal margin (Fig. 2A). Procoxae narrowly separated (Fig. 2A). Protrochantins well exposed (Fig. 2A). Elytra without longitudinal striae (Fig. 2E). Meso- and metatibiae without transverse rows of bristles or spines (Fig. 2D). Metatibial spurs normal-sized (distinctly shorter than half length of metatarsomere 1) (Fig. 2D). Penultimate tarsomeres ventrally lobed in all three pairs of legs (Figs 2C, 3). Remarks. Homalenchodes shares with Synchroidae a similar elongate habitus, lateral and oval eyes, and transverse head and pronotum. In fact, the adults of Synchroidae have an appearance similar to Melandryidae, but these two families are otherwise readily separable based on larval characters (Crowson, 1966). Nevertheless, synchroids are generally characterised by the long interfacetal setae (absent in Mallodrya Horn, although this genus might have been inappropriately placed in Synchroidae and needs to be further evaluated; Hsiao et al., 2018), unmargined posterior edge of pronotum (distinctly margined in Mallodrya), prosternal process markedly extending beyond procoxae with long oval apex (prosternal process laminate, ending just before the posterior edges of procoxae in Mallodrya), and unlobed penultimate tarsomeres (Ślipiński & Lawrence, 2010; Hsiao et al., 2018), while Homalenchodes has no interfacetal setae, a margined posterior edge of pronotum, a posteriorly gradually narrowed prosternal process with acute apex, slightly extending beyond posterior edges of procoxae, and lobed penultimate tarsomeres. William Hsiao is the K.T. Li Professor of Economics, Emeritus, in Department of Health Policy and Management and Department of Global Health and Population, at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Dr. Hsiao is a leading global expert and consultant on health insurance policies and reforms. He was born in China, educated in the United States, and received his Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard University. He is also a fully qualified actuary with extensive experience in private and social insurance. Dr. Hsiao’s health economic and policy research program spans across the world. He is a leading global expert in universal health insurance, which he has studied for more than forty years. He has been actively engaged in designing health system reforms and universal health insurance programs for many countries and regions, including Taiwan, China, and the United States. Dr. Hsiao was elected to be a member of the National Academy of Medicine, US National Academy of Science, and elected to be a Board member of the National Academy of Social Insurance and USA Society of Actuaries. He has published more than 180 papers and several books and served on several editorial boards of professional journals. Homalenchodes jarzembowskii Li, Hsiao, Yoshitomi & Cai sp. nov. (Figs 1–3) Material. Holotype, NIGP180475. Etymology. The species is named in honor of the palaeoentomologist Dr Edmund A. Jarzembowski. Diagnosis. As for the genus. Locality and horizon. Amber mine located near Noije Bum Village, Tanai Township, Myitkyina District, Kachin State, Myanmar; unnamed horizon, midCretaceous, Upper Albian to Lower Cenomanian. Description. Body strongly elongate, about 2.7 mm long, 0.6 mm wide. Surface finely punctate and with fine hairs. Head well exposed from above. Compound eyes lateral, large, emarginate in front of antennal insertions, coarsely facetted on the surface, without interfacetal setae. Antennal insertions fully concealed from above, widely separated. Subantennal grooves absent. Antennae 11-segmented, long, filiform; antennomere 1 elongate, almost parallel-sided; antennomere 2 short, subquadrate; antennomeres 3–11 elongate, subequal. Clypeus with anterior margin convex. Mandibles bilobed apically. Maxillary palps 4-segmented, simple, not clearly serrate; palpomere 1 small; palpomere 4 possibly securiform. Mentum subtrapezoidal. Submentum relatively smooth, with hairs somewhat denser than other regions. Pronotum widest posteriorly, with slightly produced posterior pronotal angles; disc without depression medially; posterior edge margined. Notosternal sutures distinct. Prosternum about as long as longitudinal procoxal diameter; prosternal process complete,gradually narrowed posteriorly, slightly extending beyond posterior procoxal margin, apically acute. Procoxal cavities narrowly separated, externally broadly open. Protrochantins well exposed. Scutellar shield transverse, subtrapezoidal, widest posteriorly; posterior edge slightly rounded, without notch. Elytra long, about 3.1 times as long as width combined, at base almost as wide as pronotum, apically separately rounded; surface without longitudinal striae. Mesocoxal cavities narrowly separated. Metacoxae almost contiguous; coxal plates absent. Legs slender. Protrochanter small, obliquely attached to profemur, with profemur abutting procoxa. All tibiae with 2 spurs, without transverse rows of bristles or spines. Metatibial spurs normal-sized. Tarsi 5-5-4; penultimate tarsomeres ventrally lobed in all three pairs of legs; metatarsomere 1 long, distinctly longer than metatarsomeres 2–4 combined. Pretarsal claws simple. Abdomen with five ventrites. Ratio of ventrite lengths along middle: 3.2:2.4:2.1:1.7:2.4. Synchroa pangu Hsiao, Li, Liu & Pang sp. nov. (Figs 1–8) Type material. Holotype ♂, ‘ CHINA / Sichuan prov., Ya’an, Tianquan, Labahe, 1500 – 2500 m / 8–9. vii. 2012 / Living (Yun Li) & M.-C. Chen leg.’ (SYSBM). DNA sample, tube number: YL0811 (SYSBM). Description. Coloration. Body and legs completely black. Male (Fig. 1). Body elongate, slightly flattened, elytra rather strongly narrowed posteriorly, covered with elongate yellowish, and slightly raised hairs. Eyes lateral, large, emarginate in front of antennal insertions, ratio of eye diameter to interocular space 1.0: 1.9. Antennae filiform, when directed backwards exceeding the humeri of elytra. Scape cylindrical, wider than other antennomeres, pedicel short, antennomere III–XI somewhat clavate, XI longest, 3.5 times as long as wide (Fig. 2). Length ratio of antennomeres as follows: 2.00:1.00: 2.20: 2.50: 2.05: 2.15:2.00: 2.05: 1.90: 1.80: 2.85. Apical maxillary palpomere securiform, apical margin moderately rounded, terminal angle somewhat obtuse (Fig. 3). Surface lustrous, densely and coarsely punctate; interspaces slightly narrower than puncture diameter. Pronotum truncate anteriorly, bisinuate posteriorly, with obtuse median lobe, 1.5 times as wide as long, 1.5 times as wide as head. Lateral sides rounded and narrowed in anterior two-thirds toward head, subparallel in posterior one-third, not margined. Anterior angle rounded; posterior angle rectangular and obtuse. Disc slightly flattened medially, surface lustrous, densely and coarsely punctate; spaces between punctures smaller than puncture diameter. Scutellum 1.4 times as wide as long. Elytra elongate, narrowed posteriorly, apex rounded, 1.20 times as wide as pronotum at humeri, 3.05 times as long as wide, surface lustrous. Disc covered with oval punctures, denser in lateral and basal part; interspaces wider than puncture diameter. Three faint and sparse traces of striae in basal two-thirds of each elytron (Fig. 4). Prosternum before coxae 0.70 times as long as longitudinal diameter of fore coxae. Prosternal process long, margined laterally, long oval, length behind fore coxae 1.25 times width between fore coxa. Width between fore coxae 4.38 times transverse coxa diameter. Mesoventrite with shallow, oval depression in which prosternal process fits, moderately punctate (Fig. 5). Legs slender. Fore legs of holotype missing. Tarsomeres simple, tarsal formula 5 - 5 - 4. The longest spur of hind tibiae 0.2 times as long as first tarsal segment; length ratio of tarsomeres as follows: 2.05:1.00: 0.60: 0.75 (measured without claws). Claws simple. Aedeagus (Figs 6–8): ensiform, lateral sides of basal piece constricted in middle. Parameres narrowly separated apically and with a groove in dorsal median part, lateral sides constricted at the basal one-third and tapered in apical half. Median lobe long, slender and clavate, extending from the tegmen in natural condition, the basal part moderately widened. Length: 10.25 mm; width: 2.6 mm. Female. Unknown. Diagnosis. This species can be easily distinguished from the other members of Synchroa by the following combination of characters: body completely black and lustrous; prothorax narrower than the width of elytra at humeri; nearly parallel lateral sides in anterior half of elytra; three faint and sparse traces of striae in basal two-thirds of each elytron; the long oval apex of prosternal process; aedeagus with lateral sides constricted at the basal one-third of paramere and long, slender and clavate median lobe, extending from the tegmen in natural condition. Notes. The holotype was collected by sweeping the lowest stratum of forest vegetation along the valley from Hetaoping to Luchi (Deer Lake) with typical deciduous and conifer ecosystem. Etymology. The specific name honors the great mythical character in Chinese mythology, Pangu, who was the first living being at the beginning of the Universe and used his giant axe to make the Yin (=earth) and the Yang (=sky) separated from a formless chaos. After his death, his body became the elements and the creatures of the world. Distribution. Vertex smooth, shallowly depressed. Eyes small, hemispherically prominent, with fine facets, interocular distance 1.8 times maximum eye diameter. Anterior margin of clypeus arcuate, frontoclypeal suture absent. Labrum membranous, partially exposed. Gular sutures close, nearly confluent. Mandibles slender, strongly curved, with a sharp tooth at two thirds of inner margin. Apical segments of maxillary palpi and labial palpi flattened, securiform. Antennae (Fig. 5A) serrate; scape slender, widened apically; pedicel short, cylindrical; antennomeres 3–6 triangular; relative lengths of antennomeres 3–6: 1.0:1.3:1.4:1.4. Pronotum (Fig. 6C) 1.2 mm long, 1.1 mm wide, circular-shape. Anterior and lateral margins arcuate, posterior margin almost straight; disc densely punctate, with pair of shallow longitudinal grooves at basal half. Scutellum parallelsided, straight at apex. Elytra (Figs 5A, 6D) 3.9 mm long, 1.3 mm wide, parallel-sided, densely pubescent, with distinctly elevated humeri; lateral margins of elytra slightly elevated, with complete epipleuron; each elytron with eight longitudinal costae; costal interspaces with row of rounded cells; hindwing well-developed, completely concealed beneath elytra. Abdomen (Fig. 5B) weakly sclerotized, with seven ventrites; first five segments broad, as wide as elytra; last two segments (Fig. 6E) narrower, extending beyond elytra, apical tergite bilobed, ventrite 7 abruptly narrower distally, emarginate at apex. Female genitalia (Fig. 6E) retracted within abdomen, with pair of palpiform gonostyli exposed. Legs (Figs 5, 6F) slender; profemora strongly dilated, meso- and metafemora elongate, profemur length 0.9 mm, mesofemur 1.2 mm, and metafemur 1.9 mm; tibiae slender, nearly straight, with paired tibial spurs, protibia length 0.9 mm, mesotibia 1.5 mm and metatibia 2.0 mm; tarsal formula 5-5-5; tarsomeres 1–3 simple, tarsomere 1 longer than two times length of tarsomere 2; tarsomere 4 bilobed; claws simple, with minute dent at base.</p> <p> <i>Etymology:</i> The specific epithet is derived from <i>paññ</i> ā, ‘wisdom’ in the Pali language and a Buddhist term described as the understanding of the true nature of phenomena. We chose this name because the discovery of this species provided an insight into the palaeontology of Cantharidae. ESSENCE AND ELLIPSIS IN HOU HSIAO HSIEN\u27S THE PUPPETMASTER THE Puppetmaster (Hsimeng Rensheng, 1993), about the life of veteran puppeteer Li Tienlu, is a groundbreaking film by one of Taiwan\u27s foremost director Hou Hsiao-hsien. The biographical film portrays Li\u27s early life from his birth in 1909 until 1945, when fifty years of Japanese rule on the island came to end. Li, whom the director calls "a living encyclopaedia of Chinese tradition"(1) is seemly regarded as a "national treasure." No stranger to Hou\u27s films, Li has appeared in several of the director\u27s works since Dust in the Wind (1986). Hou\u27s themes are rooted in the daily lives of the Taiwanese, particularly rural life. His films have a nostalgic look to them but at the same time, an unmistakable feel of authenticity and originality born from a realist approach executed in a surprisingly stylized manner.
