Paesaggio funzionale della Sila Grande. Analisi fitosociologica e geosinfitosociologica

    No full text

    No full text
In recent years, numerous papers have been published that consider indicators of the welfare and stress of the animals on cattle and pig farms to improve their health and productivity. These indicators are mostly determined in numerous international projects and published in indexed journals and proceedings from international symposia. Their usefulness in on-farm assessments of animal welfare and stress is generally well recognized. In the assessments of the welfare and stress of the animals in different systems of rearing and accommodation, the need to determine new welfare and stress indicators on cattle and pig farms was observed. The paper discusses the determination of new indicators of animal welfare and stress on cattle and pig farms based on analysis of previously published studies which include the most important papers in indexed journals and proceedings from international symposia that discussed the existing indicators. The analysis of the results of those studies will be used to determine the main characteristics of the existing new welfare and stress indicators on cattle and pig farms with a focus on their applicability. The results, discussions and conclusions in those papers will be used to generate ideas to define new welfare and stress indicators of the animals on cattle and pig farms

In recent years, numerous papers have been published that consider indicators of cattle and pig farms biosecurity with the aim of improving it, and therefore their health and productivity. These indicators were presented in international projects published in indexed journals, as well as proceedings from international symposia. On-farm assessments usability of farm production biosecurity is generally well recognized. In the assessments of the farm biosecurity in different systems of rearing and accommodation, the need to determine new indicators in cattle and pig production was observed and discussed, based on a meta-analysis of previously published studies which include the most important papers in indexed journals and proceedings from international symposia that discussed the existing indicators. The analysis of the results of those studies will be used to determine the main characteristics of the existing new farm biosecurity indicators on cattle and pig farms with a focus on their applicability. The results, discussions and conclusions of those papers will be used to generate ideas to define biosecurity indicators on cattle and pig farms

Mastitis makes changes in the blood antioxidant enzyme activity during the transition period of dairy cows: Part II

During the transition period in dairy cows, significant metabolic changes occur, potentially leading to oxidative stress. Early postpartum is also the riskiest period due to the increased susceptibility of dairy cows to mastitis. This study aimed to assess the enzymatic antioxidant status by analyzing the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPX) in blood obtained from cows with mastitis and comparing it with samples from healthy cows. The two years prospective study was carried out to assess the changes occurring in the activity of antioxidant enzymes SOD and GPX in blood serum in three physiological periods: the dry period 21 days before calving, the period from the beginning of lactation until the 21st day in lactation and period from the 22nd to the 42nd day in lactation. All cows were allocated in groups regarding the season years of calving. Categorisation of the observed population was done following screening for mastitis using udder clinical examination, the California Mastitis Test, and bacteriological culturing. The groups included healthy cows, those with abnormal milk secretion (AMS), and cows with intramammary infection (IMI). Enzyme activity was assessed in blood serum using spectrophotometric methods. The physiological stages in the transition period when blood samples were taken, showed a statistically significant influence (p<0.001) on SOD and GPX activity in blood serum. There were statistically significant positive correlations between the activity of GPX and SOD in blood serum. Health disorders of the mammary gland showed a statistically significant influence on GPX activity in blood serum (p<0.05), but there wasn’t a statistically significant influence on SOD activity in blood serum. The findings suggest that maintaining a balanced diet with sufficient antioxidants and managing environmental stressors can mitigate oxidative stress during the transition period, also reducing the risk of mastitis in early lactatio

THE IDIOLECT OF REVEREND ECONOMOS DIMITAR POPNIKOLOV PETKANOV

A less studied talented author and brother of the popular fiction writer Konstantin Petkanov, priest Dimitar wrote in the 1950s. This publication analyzes several parameters of his idiolect: phonetic peculiarities (reflex of ѣ, ѫ, ъ; epenthetic [l]; reflexes of the [tʃ] [dʒ] groups; phonetic dialectisms; phonetic doublets); morphological paradigm (case inflections; noun form for number; dualis; nomina collectiva; extended Church Slavonic suffix for adjectives; dialectal and contracted pronoun forms; a temporal system characterized by high frequency of the verbs in terms of origin, distribution and stylistic differentiation); lexical specifics (in terms of origin, distribution and stylistic differentiation). Emphasis is placed on those lexical layers that constitute and ditinguish the author’s language. Hapaxes (produced using morphological and non- morphological methods), rare words, semantic transponents, dialectisms, colloquial vocabulary and foreign words are studied. All linguistic phenomena are examined retrospectively and in comparison with the synchronous linguistic situation before and after the orthographic reform of 1945 in order to highlight the innovative contribution and the mechanisms through which the author enriched the contemporary Bulgarian vocabulary. Occasionalisms, dialectal and archaic units occur more often in Petkanov’s poetic works than in his fiction. The source material has been excerpted from Volume 1 (January – March) and Volume 2 (April – June) of the hagiographic tetralogy “The Year of Our Lord“ and the memoir “A Book about My Brother – the Writer Konstantin N. Petkanov“, which were published a few years ago by Dimitar Petkanov’s heirs

    Biosecurity measures on ruminant farms

In many scientific papers, the term biosecurity measures (BSMs) are defined as the implementation of segregation, sanitation or management procedures specifically designed to reduce the likelihood of the introduction, establishment, survival or spread of a potential pathogen into, within or from a farm or geographical area. The main BSMs (general external and internal BSMs related to newly introduced animals, farm workers, family members, visitors and service providers, vehicles, tools and equipment, location of farms, water and feed, control programs, management practices, handling of raw materials, work procedures, training, plans and records), based on literature data, guides, instructions, recommendation codes and checklists, are presented in the paper. In addition to the BSMs mentioned, the importance of segregation, cleaning and disinfection is emphasized. The most important and effective part of biosecurity is to keep infected animals and contaminated material away from non-infected animals. Cleaning and disinfecting barns, vehicles and equipment, especially boots and clothing, is a very effective way to minimize the transmission of disease to or between animals. It is very important to implement BSMs as a long-standing and successful practice on farms to maintain animal health. These measures should be included in a comprehensive biosecurity plan, which is tailored to farms characteristics and needs that must be fully implemented. A biosecurity plan and the design and implementation of biosecurity programs should address how farmers handle animals, vehicles and human access to the farm, as well as animal health and work procedures. Key BSMs should be followed on an ongoing basis and, working with veterinarians, farmers themselves can play an important role in keeping animals and production as healthy as possible. It is important to regularly assess the implementation of BSMs using appropriate questionnaires, which can highlight deficiencies that should be addressed immediately

The most common idea in Romance studies is that Romans, as practical people, didn’t conduct theoretical research on their country or their army, but they gradually built them both. Meanwhile, they reformed and upgraded it, so that they could respond to the challenges of their age. Moreover, the basis of their research was not explicit doctrines, or prior concepts, in fact they used their own, or the experience of others, to find concrete solutions to daily problems. Just as the Hellenic romanophile Polibius (200-120 B.C), in his work Historia, asks the crucial question: ”Is it possible to have such an unreliable man who is not interested in how the Romans, with their unicipal structure, managed to conquer the whole world”? - in the same way the author of this paper, as much as its content allows, humbly and unpretentiously tries to answer the crucial question: “What kind of military structure created and defended one of the biggest and most enduring empires in world’s history, and what rules governed it”
