    Assessment of Construction Productivity in the Context of Khulna City of Bangladesh

    This paper examines the current state of construction productivity in Khulna, Bangladesh and major factors that influence productivity. A questionnaire survey was distributed to various stakeholders and construction projects in Khulna city. Ten projects in Khulna were selected for productivity assessment and a total of 100 respondents participated for ranking the influencing factors. The data were then used to calculate the productivity and relative important index which enabled the factors to be ranked. Factors influencing construction productivity were analyzed using an RII method. The average productivity of formwork, concrete work, brickwork, and plastering work in the Khulna construction industry is 3.40 sqft/hr, 4.98 cft/hr, 1.82 cft/hr, and 8.16 sqft/hr respectively. Analysis of these factors showed that the top five ranked factors affecting construction productivity are labor supervision, skilled labor, availability of materials, availability of equipments and scheduling of work. Therefore, focus should be targeted on these factors to make the construction firms profitable as well as improving the progress in construction works

    Streamflow prediction using an integrated methodology based on convolutional neural network and long short-term memory networks

    Streamfow (Qfow) prediction is one of the essential steps for the reliable and robust water resources planning and management. It is highly vital for hydropower operation, agricultural planning, and food control. In this study, the convolution neural network (CNN) and Long-Short-term Memory network (LSTM) are combined to make a new integrated model called CNN-LSTM to predict the hourly Qfow (short-term) at Brisbane River and Teewah Creek, Australia. The CNN layers were used to extract the features of Qfow time-series, while the LSTM networks use these features from CNN for Qfow time series prediction. The proposed CNN-LSTM model is benchmarked against the standalone model CNN, LSTM, and Deep Neural Network models and several conventional artifcial intelligence (AI) models. Qfow prediction is conducted for diferent time intervals with the length of 1-Week, 2-Weeks, 4-Weeks, and 9-Months, respectively. With the help of diferent performance metrics and graphical analysis visualization, the experimental results reveal that with small residual error between the actual and predicted Qfow, the CNN-LSTM model outperforms all the benchmarked conventional AI models as well as ensemble models for all the time intervals. With 84% of Qfow prediction error below the range of 0.05 m3 ­s−1, CNN-LSTM demonstrates a better performance compared to 80% and 66% for LSTM and DNN, respectively. In summary, the results reveal that the proposed CNN-LSTM model based on the novel framework yields more accurate predictions.     A Safety-II Perspective on organisational learning in healthcare organisations comment on "False Dawns and New Horizons in Patient Safety Research and Practice".

    In their recent editorial Mannion and Braithwaite provide an insightful critique of traditional patient safety improvement efforts, and offer a powerful alternative vision based on Safety-II thinking that has the potential to radically transform the way we approach patient safety. In this commentary, I explore how the Safety-II perspective points to new directions for organisational learning in healthcare organisations. Current approaches to organisational learning adopted by healthcare organisations have had limited success in improving patient safety. I argue that these approaches learn about the wrong things, and in the wrong way. I conclude that organisational learning in healthcare organisations should provide deeper understanding of the adaptations healthcare workers make in their everyday clinical work, and that learning and improvement approaches should be more democratic by promoting participation and ownership among a broader range of stakeholders as well as patients.     Inflation in Czechoslovakia, 1985-91

    The authors assess inflation in Czechoslovakia between 1985 and 1991 and identify the main causes of inflation through a literature survey and empirical studies. The official prices in centrally planned economies were never perceived by central planners to be fully market clearing. Only by coincidence would the overall price level correspond to the level associated with general equilibrium. What is missing in official price indices in centrally planned economies - including the consumer price index - is suppressed inflation, manifast in queuing for products, forced substitution of demand, and forced savings. Also missing is hidden inflation, associated with practices that disguise price increases behind cosmetic or other change in product quality. The authors argue that inflationary pressures in Czechoslovakia in 1985-89 originated mainly in the investment sector. Even though the investment sector was strictly controlled, making it difficult for open inflation to emerge, the scope for inflationary pressures was great in Czechoslovakia. Such pressures arose from a mixture of factors, including poor investment planning, accommodating government finance, and the high priority given to investments and social consumption. For Czechoslovakia, the official price indices show virtually no inflation between 1985 and 1989, when there were long waiting lists for such products as cars and state and cooperative flats. Trends in these price indices do not seem to depend on the method used for constructing them, according to the sensitivity tests conducted by Czechoslovakia's Federal Statistical Office. Obviously, the official price indices failed to capture the full extent of economic disequilibrium in that period. But the extent to which official price indices understated inflationary pressures was not serious in Czechoslovakia, compared with other centrally planned economies. Estimates of hidden inflation for 1985-89 range from 0.5 percent to 2 percent a year in consumer markets and about 3 percent in the industrial sector. Estimates for suppressed inflation were less than 5 percent. The relatively small inflationary gap is indirectly confirmed by the sharp inflation associated with the recent price liberalization that subsided in a relatively short period, and both suppressed and hidden inflations have virtually disappeared. Estimates of hidden inflation were based on benchmark price comparisons between Czechoslovakia and such market economies as Austria.     The Central Sets Theorem near zero was originally proved by Hindman and Leader. Later a version of Central Sets Theorem was proved by De, Hindman and Strauss known to be the stronger Central Sets Theorem. Subsequently many other versions of Central Sets Theorem came, among which Dev Phulara proved the theorem for a sequence of central sets instead of taking one set.     Chikitsamanjari - A Unique Encyclopedia of Keraliya Ayurveda

    Chikitsamanjari has been used traditionally as a handbook for clinical practice by the renowned Ayurveda physicians of Kerala. Chikitsamanjari can be considered as a true representative of the Kerala tradition of Ayurveda and plays a pivotal role in keeping the Kerala tradition of Ayurveda alive. The book can be considered as an abridged version of Brihath trayees, explaining in brief about the major diseases encompassing the six branches of Ayurveda, excluding Rasayana and Vajikarana. Based on internal and external evidences, it can be inferred that the author of the text might be one among the Ashtavaidyas. The first edition of the text was based on two manuscripts obtained from the disciples of two Aryavaidya traditional families in Kerala. A combined version with commentary, by Sri. Sreeman Namboothiri was published by Vidyarambha Publishers, Mullakkal, Alappuzha, in 1990. Chikitsamanjari Part I and II together contain 67 titles, with the first 65 titles describing different diseases and their treatments and the last two titles giving a concise note on Dharavidhi and Manavidhi respectively. Among the Birhat trayees, the book has a greater inclination towards Ashtanga Hridaya. This book contains more than 1000 drugs and formulations, including 164 single drugs. Locally available drugs have been described extensively and are mentioned in their vernacular names. Most of the formulations are simple, cheap, easily available and easy to prepare even at home like Mukkudi and Swarasa kalpana. Newly emerging diseases like Bhaktarodha, Somaroga and Asthisrava and existing conditions of growing prevalence such as Sthaulya, Karshya are explained. Much importance has been given to simple procedures like Dhara, Abhyanga, Pinda sweda and Tapa sweda rather than complex procedures like Vamana, Vasti and Sastra karma. Among Panchakarma, Virechana yogas are elaborately explained and no Yogas for vasti are explained. Urovasti is indicated as a procedure in functional conditions like Arochaka, Bhaktarodha and Chardi. Modifications of Swedana karma like Kshira bashpa, Tavidu kizhi and Tapasweda using Arkapatra and Panasapatra have been mentioned. Even though Chikitsamanjari is an authentic text that describes Kerala Ayurveda, it has got certain demerits and limitations. Truly, Chikitsamanjari is a textbook of Ayurveda, which has considered the nuance of treatment from all the angles of simplicity, availability, efficacy and cost effectiveness

    Practicability of a Time-Limited Welfare Assessment Protocol for Pasture-Based Dairy Farms, and a Preliminary Assessment of Welfare Outcome Thresholds

    This study assessed a new time-limited protocol developed for pasture-based cows across 23 dairy farms. The process started prior to milking with a questionnaire, followed by an assessment of resources (16 farms only) and behavioural observation of cows at pasture. Remaining animal-based measures were assessed during milking, usually by two assessors (one parlour based and one outside). The protocol proved to be practical and feasible with limited changes needed, except for the assessment of water availability and behaviour. As most cows could access only one water trough, distance between troughs was not a measure of water availability, while the observation of a large numbers of cows at pasture for 30 min resulted in few observations and an uncertain denominator (effective number of observed cows). Further research is needed to determine the best way of assessing water availability and cow behaviour in a time-limited assessment of pasture-based cows. Three animal-based measures (broken tails, dirtiness, and coughing) had mean values higher than the author-determined acceptable thresholds, while <50% of farms met trough cleanliness and track condition targets, and none met the criteria for shelter and shade. This was a sample of farms based on convenience, so more data are required to establish the representativeness of these results. Such testing should involve assessment of the repeatability and reliability of the measures in our protocol
