Realist magic in the fiction of William Dean Howells

    No full text
William Dean Howells was committed to determining what would inspire people from different economic, political, and religious backgrounds to imagine each other as respected members of a human community. Scholars have debated whether his realist aesthetic was suited to do that. Some have argued that realism works to contain the lower classes, and others have argued that it portrays a heterogeneous society in which social problems can be solved through human negotiation between the middle classes and others. Scholars have not, however, addressed how Howells performs the necessary shift in his fiction from a space in which characters focus on their own interests to a space in which they seek to enact justice through negotiating with disparate people. This article identifies and names what enacts that necessary shift: the literary device of accident. In Howells's fiction chance meetings, feelings of accidental connection, and injuries during travel force his middle-class characters into understanding labor politics, slum dwellers, and morally compromised millionaires. His use of accident changes over time, from The Undiscovered Country (1880) to Annie Kilburn (1889) and A Hazard of New Fortunes (1890). This essay traces that change in order to reflect on the democratic and antidemocratic implications of Howells's realist aesthetic

Howells’ Idea of the Reading Public

    No full text
Howells' realism is closely connected with the idea of a democratic and enlightened reading public, a reading public that still, however, remains to be created. Caught in the contradictions of 18th-century universalist assumptions, Howells accepted the market as an instrument of enlightenment and at the same time loathed it for keeping readers in « dumb and passive need ». Starting with an analysis of Howells' speech at the celebration of his 75th birthday, this article traces the key terms of « forum » and market-place' in some of his critical writings. It also connects their semantic instability to Howells' lingering crises of identity and vocation. Ickstadt Heinz. Howells’ Idea of the Reading Public. Weightless neural systems have often struggles in terms of speed, performances, and memory issues. There is also lack of sufficient interfacing of weightless neural systems to others systems. Addressing these issues motivates and forms the aims and objectives of this thesis. In addressing these issues, algorithms are formulated, classifiers, and multi-classifiers are designed, and hardware design of classifier are also reported. Specifically, the purpose of this thesis is to report on the algorithms and designs of weightless neural systems. A background material for the research is a weightless neural network known as Probabilistic Convergent Network (PCN). By introducing two new and different interfacing method, the word "Enhanced" is added to PCN thereby giving it the name Enhanced Probabilistic Convergent Network (EPCN). To solve the problem of speed and performances when large-class databases are employed in data analysis, multi-classifiers are designed whose composition vary depending on problem complexity. It also leads to the introduction of a novel gating function with application of EPCN as an intelligent combiner. For databases which are not very large, single classifiers suffices. Speed and ease of application in adverse condition were considered as improvement which has led to the design of EPCN in hardware. A novel hashing function is implemented and tested on hardware-based EPCN. Results obtained have indicated the utility of employing weightless neural systems. The results obtained also indicate significant new possible areas of application of weightless neural systems

Exploration of the relationship between physical literacy and literacy through a health and wellbeing perspective

Implementing an environmental approach, as set upon the lifelong continuum (Gabbard, 2021), is one means to embrace literacy as a holistic pedagogical concept to towards lifelong health and wellbeing. Complementing this with a pedagogy interweaving critical thinking into the learning series seeks to progress student self (and collective) agency along this journey (Murray and Napper-Owen, 2021) seeks to justly facilitate beyond school opportunities amidst the variation of accessibility for children in differing settings and circumstance. This quasi-experimental study employs mixed methods. It seeks to learn more about the role metacognition plays upon physical literacy toward health and wellbeing as implemented in an interdisciplinary manner. It proffers to provide a tangible way to integrate agency developing strategies for children across learning. Participants completed a semester in physical education, set across a varied set of environments (Murray and Howells, 2024). They completed formative and summative national level evaluations, together with pre-post evaluations around critical thinking and health related fitness biomotor indices. The secondary school students (N=90) were randomly assigned into two groups; in efforts to illuminate any correlations between critical thinking competence and capacity to progress learning and proficiency across physical literacy concepts. We sought to learn more about whether children with greater critical thinking aptitude displayed greater propensity and competency across their semester of learning, and indeed how they might utilise (any of) this when both in class, and furthermore, any likelihood of intention when away from school over the summer. Its design is based upon the Brown Framework of Metacognition (1987)

The Italian experiences of an American writer of the late nineteenth century, William Dean Howells (1837-1920) reflected in travelogues provide researchers of literature the opportunity to study the genesis of his work in the paradigm of the culture of the United States. Accompanying him throughout life, they were the aesthetic basis for literary work of Howells. The influence of Italian works of art and literature can be seen in the choice of the individual style of the writer. Of special interest is the influence of the process of the creative development of American writer on his attitude to changing environment in the capital and the provincial towns of Italy. The topicality of this work is associated with the peculiarities of artistic interpretations of the different cultural environment through the author's perception of reality. The mental concept of "another" life, the recognition of the specificity of the foreign country" often take place in the process of reading the literary works of different genres. In prose of W. D. Howells the perception of the city is connected with the author's point of view on the depicted object, so the leading method in the study was the biographical. This is the first time in the Russian literature of XXI century that the travelogues by W. D. Howells are analyzed, the main motives of the narration are identified, the archetypal images, expressed in literary form, are determined. Fiction affects the formation of the cultural image of the city, the perception of its environment, plunging into the epicenter of the described lives of citizens. The practical significance of the research of the cultural phenomenon of the city is to identify the specific features, forms and techniques creating its image, enclosed in the space-time continuum of the works of W. D. Howells

Monetary Policy Uncertainty: Is There a Difference Between Bank of England and the Bundesbank/ECB?

    No full text
It is widely believed that institutional arrangements influence the quality of monetary policy outcomes. Judged on its ‘transparency’ characteristics, therefore the Bank of England should do better than both the Bundesbank and ECB. However, studies based on market evidence show that on average, agents anticipate policy moves by both banks equally well. Since benefits from transparency should also show in a narrowing of the diversity in cross sectional forecasts, this paper extends the existing literature in an attempt to reconcile the contradictory evidence on ‘transparency’ of both banks. We show that the diversity in interest rate forecasts is greater under the Bundesbank/ECB than the Bank of England. Other factors than ‘transparency’ do not seem to affect interest rate uncertainty in Germany. Increasing difficulty in forecasting inflation appears to explain in part UK interest rate forecast dispersion.transparency, yield curve, forecasting uncertainty, Bank of England, Bundesbank, ECB

Situation Assessor Support System: A Knowledge-Based Systems Approach to Pilot Aiding

    No full text
The Situation Assessment Support System (SASS) seeks to demonstrate s knowledge-based subsystem that will provide a dynamic assessment of the operational context and generate recommendations to support COGPIT tactical decision-making. Extensive knowledge acquisition and validation has been undertaken with appropriate experts over four vignettes, leading to the production of the knowledge base document. This encapsulated all relevant expertise, for integration and aiding pilot tactical decision making in the proposed COGPIT simulation test environment. Prioritised areas of support agreed with MOD, focus on plan assessment, system-health checks, DAS, rerouting and target attack vignettes. A series of knowledge acquisition sessions were conducted to build the knowledge base with the involvement of RAF and RN aircrew. The individual task decompositions and detailed knowledge captured during this phase provides the basis for future architectural and software-design processes. By exploiting software and toolkits developed under MOD CRP funding, the work seeks to define, design and construct a decision support sub-system prototype to operate in scenarios associated with FOAS and FCBA, using Real Time Multi Agent Software. This paper will describe the concept of operation and technical development of SASS
