Genotype of galectin 2 (LGALS2) is associated with insulin-glucose profile in the British Women’s Heart and Health Study
AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: It has been suggested that the gene encoding lymphotoxin-alpha (LTA) is associated with insulin resistance, and genetic association studies in the LTA region offer some support for this. However, LTA is in linkage disequilibrium with both the HLA gene cluster and the gene encoding TNF-alpha, making inferences about causality difficult. In this study, we used the galectin 2 (LGALS2) genotype, which affects LTA secretion but is located on another chromosome than the HLA gene cluster or TNF, to examine the relationship between the LTA pathway and traits of the metabolic syndrome. SUBJECTS: A cross-sectional genetic association study was carried out in 3,272 British women of European origin who were aged 60 to 79 years and were randomly selected from the community. RESULTS: Fasting plasma glucose and serum insulin were statistically significantly associated with LGALS2 rs7291467, with this association being independent of BMI and WHR. The mean difference in fasting insulin per minor allele was -4% (p=0.01 for trend by allele) and the mean per minor allele difference in fasting glucose was -2% (p=0.02 for trend by allele). When women with known diabetes were excluded from the analyses the findings did not differ from those for the whole cohort. CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION: Our findings for the physically unlinked LGALS2, invite further study of LGALS2 specifically and the LTA pathway generally for their influence on glucose-insulin regulation
Engineering, Systems and ServicesTechnology, Policy and Managemen

Radar observations of Asteroids 64 Angelina and 69 Hesperia
We report new radar observations of E-class Asteroid 64 Angelina and M-class Asteroid 69 Hesperia obtained with the Arecibo Observatory S-band radar (2480MHz, 12.6cm). Our measurements of Angelina\u27s radar bandwidth are consistent with reported diameters and poles. We find Angelina\u27s circular polarization ratio to be 0.8±0.1, tied with 434 Hungaria for the highest value observed for main-belt asteroids and consistent with the high values observed for all E-class asteroids (Benner, L.A.M., Ostro, S.J., Magri, C., Nolan, M.C., Howell, E.S., Giorgini, J.D., Jurgens, R.F., Margot, J.L., Taylor, P.A., Busch, M.W., Shepard, M.K. Icarus 195, 220-225). Our radar observations of 69 Hesperia, combined with lightcurve-based shape models, lead to a diameter estimate, D =110±15km, approximately 20% smaller than the reported IRAS value. We estimate Hesperia to have a radar albedo of σ̂OC=0.45±0.12, consistent with a high-metal content. We therefore add 69 Hesperia to the Mm-class (high metal M) (Shepard, M.K., Clark, B.E., Ockert-Bell, M., Nolan, M.C., Howell, E.S., Magri, C., Giorgini, J.D., Benner, L.A.M., Ostro, S.J., Harris, A.W., Warner, B.D., Stephens, R.D., Mueller, M. [2010]. Icarus 208, 221-237), bringing the total number of Mm-class objects to eight; this is 40% of all M-class asteroids observed by radar to date. © 2011 Elsevier Inc. ef

Discussion of “Perceptual models of uncertainty for socio-hydrological systems: a flood risk change example” *
Dealing with uncertainty is key in socio-hydrological analysis. As such, thinking through what uncertainties mean for whom and when is key. This discussion contribution introduces three issues related to defining uncertainties. The first issue deals with the problem of defining uncertainty as a given external reality. The second issue deals with who decides about relevant uncertainties. The third issue deals with the issue whether coupled human-hydrological systems can be seen as existing on their own. Finally, the text provides two examples of hydrological research that try to be explicit about our dealing with multiple (interpretations of) realities.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Water Resource
