'Pilings of Thought Under Spoken': The Poetry of Susan Howe, 1974-1993.
No full textPhDThis thesis discusses the poetry published by contemporary American poet Susan
Howe over a period of almost two decades. The dissertation is chiefly concerned with
articulating the relationship between poetic form, history, and authority in this body
of' work. Howe's poetry dredges the past for the linguistic effects of patriarchy,
colonialism and war. My reading of the work is an exploration of the ways in which a
disjunctive poetics can address such historical trauma. The poems, rather than
attempting to reinstate voices lifted from what Howe has called "the dark side of
history", are a means of reflecting the resistance that the past offers to contemporary
investigation. It is the effacement, and not the recovery, of history's victims, that is
discernible in the contours of these highly opaque texts. Notions of authority are most
often addressed in the poetry through the figure of paternal absence, which has a
threefold function in the work, serving to represent social authority, an aporetic
conception of divinity and an autobiographical narrative. Alongside the antiauthoritarian
currents in the writing - critiques, for example, of the doctrine of
Manifest Destiny or of scapegoating versions of femininity - my thesis stresses Howe's
engagement with negative theology and with a strain of American Protestant
enthusiasm that has its roots in 17th century New England. The dissertation explores
the dissonance caused by the co-existence in the poetry of elements of political dissent
and religious mysticism. Finally, I consider Howe's engagement with literary history
and authors such as Shakespeare, Swift, Thoreau and Melville. The manner in which
Howe deploys the words of others in her work, I argue, allows for a mixture of textual
polyphony and a more conventional notion of authorial 'voice'

No full textEl primer número de Conversaciones a Paul Philippot, cuya pluma clara y elegante ha inspirado a más de una generación de conservadores en el mundo entero, y a quien se le recuerda aún por su paso por México en los comienzos del Centro Churubusco (Coordinación Nacional de Conservación del Patrimonio Cultural), a finales de la década de 1960 e inicios de la de 1970. Autor de numerosos escritos que discurren sobre el desarrollo de la disciplina y las implicaciones de las intervenciones de conservación, así como temas específicos tales como la pátina, la limpieza y la reintegración de lagunas, al igual que numerosos textos fundamentales sobre conservación de pintura mural y sobre escultura policromada, y por último, co-autor de la Carta de Venecia, la elección de alguno de sus textos inéditos en español no era tarea sencilla. Al final, se eligió “L’oeuvre d’art, le temps et la restauration”, publicado originalmente en 1995, en la revista Histoire de l’art, a quien agradecemos la posibilidad de replicar aquí el texto original. Este artículo abarca muchos de los temas que han marcado la producción escrita de Paul Philippot. Therefore, the text focuses on the following aspects: subjects related to the interpretation of theoretical references in the field of restoration in Brazil; the importance of discussing those references to analyse the role of time in conservation; issues resulting from the fact of not considering the passing of time in recent interventions made in that country; finally, as a conclusion, a reflection on the traces of time in the work of art, i.e. patina.Este artigo tem por intuito refletir sobre alguns temas relevantes para a preservação hoje, por meio da análise de aspectos do pensamento de Paul Philippot, em especial no que diz respeito ao papel do tempo na restauração. In the search for understandings, adults can act in ways that close opportunities for children to explore and describe meanings for the behaviour. This article invites practitioners to check their assumptions in this kind of work, and to take a stance that opposes abusive actions – while taking up a position of enquiry to support the multiple stories that make up children’s lives
