    In this paper, we generalise the constant market shares (CMS) framework, with particular attention to the underlying theoretical conditions required for diagnostic interpretation. The approach is applied to the analysis of the export performance of the Australian processed food sector in South-East Asia over the period 1980–2003.     Howard White has a wealth of information from watching his grandfather Herman D. White, Eau Claire's "Mr. Baseball". The interview with Mr. White took place on March 12, 2012 at 9:00 a.m. The questions that were covered were: When you think of Eau Claire baseball, what memories come to mind? Were any other members of your family involved in baseball as much as your grandfather? How were they involved? Did your grandfather ever tell any interesting stories of famous players that played for the Eau Claire Bears? And what were some of the best stories he ever told you? Did your grandfather ever mention any controversies on the signing of black players to the Eau Claire Bears? Do you know how your grandfather reacted to the folding of the Northern League? Some of the responses that Mr. White had included were the conditions of travel during the prime years of the Northern League. He had spoken about how the Eau Claire team had traveled in hearses that were remodeled for the baseball team to use to travel throughout the North. Those travels had included as well constant repair of the vehicles, especially changing flat tires due to the travel on poorly graveled roads that were common during that time. Another aspect that Mr. White had focused on was of how baseball has always been an essential aspect of Eau Claire. This is because he strongly believes that baseball has always been a pasttime that families could enjoy together, from being part of the team to watching a baseball game underneath the lights at Carson Park Stadium. At this point, he does talk about some of the feelings he does have about the University not having a baseball team

    Kemeny's constant and its relation to the effective graph resistance has been established for regular graphs by Palacios et al. [1]. Based on the Moore–Penrose pseudo-inverse of the Laplacian matrix, we derive a new closed-form formula and deduce upper and lower bounds for the Kemeny constant.     Trypanosoma lewisi: effects of trace metal contaminants on immunological responses

    The effects of trace metal contaminants (lead, cadmium, and mercury) on the immunologic responses of rats infected with Trypanosoma lewisi were investigated to determine whether chronic exposures to subclinical levels of these metals have adverse effects on the host\u27s ability to respond to an infective agent.Earlier and higher levels of parasitemia were detected in animals exposed to cadmium, lead, and mercury. The variability in length of trypanosome cells in metal-exposed animals became constant at a later time and persisted for a longer time, indicating a delay in antibody synthesis. Serum levels of IgG and IgM were increased in infected animals exposed to trace metals; however, lower levels were observed when compared with infected control animals. Animals exposed only to trace metals showed decreases in serum levels of IgG and IgM. In contact sensitivity to dinitrofluorobenzene (DNFB), animals exposed to trace metals demonstrated no significant difference in sensitization when compared with those infected and exposed to trace metals

    Structural and functional comparisons of chicken and human cellular fibronectins

    We have investigated the structural and functional differences between chicken and human cellular fibronectin (i) by comparing the tryptic peptide patterns using sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (ii) by analyzing the binding properties of isolated trypsin-resistant polypeptide fragments. Although the overall functional organization of chicken and human cellular fibronectins was similar, the tryptic patterns obtained from these two molecules were strikingly different. For example, the tryptic digest of chicken cellular fibronectin contained two unique peptide fragments having molecular sizes of 45 and 70 kilodaltons. The previously unidentified carboxyl-terminal 45-kDa fragment is an intermediate that appears between 15 to 120 s of digestion. The 70-kDa fragment binds to gelatin, to fibrin (with unusually high apparent affinity), to heparin (at low ionic strength), and to fixed Staphylococcus aureus cells; it also contains an acceptor site for factor XIII(a) (plasma transglutaminase). These results suggest that the functional domains of chicken and human fibronectins remain constant and that structural variations occur in the protease-susceptible regions of the molecule.     A Qualitative Analysis of Surgical Faculty and Surgical Resident Perceptions of Potential Barriers to Implementing a Novel Surgical Education Curriculum

    Objective: Sociocultural differences between patients and physicians affect communication, and suboptimal communication can lead to patient dissatisfaction and poor health outcomes. To mitigate disparities in surgical outcomes, the Provider Awareness and Cultural dexterity Toolkit for Surgeons was developed as a novel curriculum for surgical residents focusing on patient-centeredness and enhanced patient-clinician communication through a cultural dexterity framework. This study\u27s objective was to examine surgical faculty and surgical resident perspectives on potential facilitators and barriers to implementing the cultural dexterity curriculum. Design, Setting, and Participants: Focus groups were conducted at 2 separate academic conferences, with the curriculum provided to participants for advanced review. The first 4 focus groups consisted entirely of surgical faculty (n = 37), each with 9 to 10 participants. The next 4 focus groups consisted of surgical residents (n = 31), each with 6 to 11 participants. Focus groups were recorded and transcribed, and the data were thematically analyzed using a constant, comparative method. Results: Three major themes emerged: (1) Departmental and hospital endorsement of the curriculum are necessary to ensure successful rollout. (2) Residents must be engaged in the curriculum in order to obtain full participation and “buy-in.” (3) The application of cultural dexterity concepts in practice are influenced by systemic and institutional factors. Conclusions: Institutional support, resident engagement, and applicability to practice are crucial considerations for the implementation of a cultural dexterity curriculum for surgical residents. These 3 tenets, as identified by surgical faculty and residents, are critical for ensuring an impactful and clinically relevant education program

    Alterations in Monoclonal Antibody Affinity and Antigenic Receptor Site Expression on Mycoplasma-Infected Human Colorectal Cancer Cells

    The affinity of MoAb CO 17–1A and expression of its antigenic target were studied on uninfected and mycoplasma-infected colorectal cancer cell lines SW 1116 and SW 948. Binding of 125I-labeled CO 17–1A to SW 1116 cells was quantified at 37°C by determination of the affinity constant (Ka) and the number of antigenic receptor sites (r) per cell using Scatchard plots. When mycoplasma-free SW 1116 cells were used as targets, Ka was 0.92 ± 0.06 × 108M -1 and r = 1.32 ± 0.14 × 106 at 37°C. One batch of unspeciated, mycoplasma-infected SW 1116 cells had reduced affinity and a decreased number of antigenic receptor sites per cell for 125I-labeled 17–1A, while another batch of infected SW 1116 cells had a 4- to 5-fold increase in r and diminished Ka for the antibody compared with uninfected cells. When unspeciated, mycoplasma-infected SW 948 cells were exposed to 125I-labeled 17–1A and the data subjected to Scatchard analysis, the affinity of the antibody deviated markedly from linearity and rendered analysis for Ka and r meaningless. These data indicate that mycoplasma infection can produce variable effects on the cellular expression of antigenic receptor sites and the affinity of antibody for its target, and emphasize the importance of using mycoplasma-free cell lines in studies of these parameters. © 1990, SAGE Publications.
