Continuous Trajectory Planning of Mobile Sensors for Informative Forecasting

    No full text
This paper addresses planning of continuous paths for mobile sensors to reduce uncertainty in some quantities of interest in the future. The mutual information between the continuous measurement path and the future verification variables defines the information reward. Two expressions for computing this mutual information are presented: the filter form extended from the state-of-the-art and the smoother form inspired by the conditional independence structure. The key properties of the approach using the filter and smoother strategies are presented and compared. The smoother form is shown to be preferable because it provides better computational efficiency, facilitates easy integration with existing path synthesis tools, and most importantly, enables correct quantification of the rate of information accumulation. A spatial interpolation technique is used to relate the motion of the sensor to the evolution of the measurement matrix, which leads to the formulation of the optimal path planning problem. A gradient-ascent steering law based on the concept of information potential field is also presented as a computationally efficient suboptimal strategy. A simplified weather forecasting example is used to compare several planning methodologies and to illustrate the potential performance benefits of using the proposed planning approach.National Science Foundation (CNS-0540331

Dynamics of Network Formation Processes in the Co-Author Model

    No full text
This article studies the dynamics in the formation processes of a mutual consent network in game theory setting: the Co-Author Model. In this article, a limited observation is applied and analytical results are derived. Then, 2 parameters are varied: the number of individuals in the network and the initial probability of the links in the network in its initial state. A simulation result shows a finding that is consistent with an analytical result for a state of equilibrium while it also shows different possible equilibria.Dynamics, Network, Game Theory, Model,Simulation, Equilibrium, Complexity

Shock tube study of JP-10 ignition delay time

    No full text
JP-10 (exo-tetrahydrodicyclopentadiene, C10H16) ignition delay times were measured in a preheated shock tube. The vapor pressures of the JP-10 were measured directly by using a high-precision vacuum gauge, to remedy the difficulty in determining the gaseous concentrations of heavy hydrocarbon fuel arising from the adsorption on the wall in shock tube experiments. The whole variation of pressure and emission of the OH or CH radicals were observed in the ignition process by a pressure transducer and a photomultiplier with a monochromator. The emission of the OH or CH radicals was used to identify the time to ignition. Experiments were performed over the pressure range of 151-556 kPa, temperature range of 1000-2100 K, fuel concentrations of 0.1%-0.55% mole fraction, and stoichiometric ratios of 0.25, 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0. The experimental results show that for the lower and higher temperature ranges, there are different dependency relationships of the ignition time on the temperature and the concentrations of JP-10 and oxygen

Studies in laboratory animals suggest that exposure to these jet fuels can also cause damage to the liver, immune system, and the skin. Neither JP-5, JP-8, or Jet A have been found in at least 1,832 National Priorities List sites identified by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).tfacts121.pd

Future Justice of the Peace (JP): Triangulating Doctrinal and Empirical Research for Evidence-based Reform of the NSW JP System

    No full text
The role of Justice of the Peace (‘JP’) has had an enduring presence throughout society. It is often seen as a trusted gateway or interface between the justice system and the community. Despite this importance, very little academic or political attention has been paid to the role of the modern New South Wales (‘NSW’) JP. In the current scenario of legislative change and information technology innovation, the tasks of the role face the threat of redundancy. This thesis presents the first comprehensive research into the contemporary role of the NSW JP. In essence, it analyses the tensions between their former, current and potential future roles. This research uses a qualitative multimethod approach that combines doctrinal, historical and empirical research and triangulates the resulting outcomes. To provide the legal framework of the role, this research contextualises the role within NSW and provides a brief historical analysis of the evolution of the modern NSW JP role; it also considers the relationship of the NSW JP role to JP systems in Australia and other countries. To provide an experiential base, this thesis also examines the perceptions of 27 NSW JPs concerning how the role is understood and functions in practice. The ‘outsider’ perspectives of two key professional stakeholders complements the analysis. This combined research provides verifiable evidence for policy decisions about the future of the 67,000 NSW JPs and possible functions in access-to-justice reforms.Consequent to these findings, this thesis argues that there is a critical disconnect between the law, governance and the NSW JP, and it pinpoints areas for reform. To recalibrate to best serve the interests of justice in the modern legal system, the key recommendation is to align with Qld’s JP-specific system by embedding a governance framework and strategic plan that aligns with the Volunteering Australia’s National Standards for Volunteer Involvement. Second, reform is necessary in order to take advantage of what the NSW JP can offer as a volunteer resource and to simultaneously ensure the integrity of legal transactions, which would protect both the public and the JPs themselves. Within a JP-specific volunteer governance framework, the formal training and development of the NSW JP as an agile asset would open opportunities to redeploy NSW JPs to new service initiatives. Using a JP-specific volunteer governance framework approach would provide options for the government in the manner this valued resource can be deployed within changing access-to-justice initiatives while providing varying volunteer engagement options for the NSW JPs.Through the lens of the multimethod approach, this thesis presents a comprehensive, multifaceted view of the modern JP in NSW, analyses the reasons that urgent reform is needed and offers evidence-based recommendations to enliven the ‘Future JP’.</p

How markets slowly digest changes in supply and demand

    No full text
In this article we revisit the classic problem of tatonnement in price formation from a microstructure point of view, reviewing a recent body of theoretical and empirical work explaining how fluctuations in supply and demand are slowly incorporated into prices. Because revealed market liquidity is extremely low, large orders to buy or sell can only be traded incrementally, over periods of time as long as months. As a result order flow is a highly persistent long-memory process. Maintaining compatibility with market efficiency has profound consequences on price formation, on the dynamics of liquidity, and on the nature of impact. We review a body of theory that makes detailed quantitative predictions about the volume and time dependence of market impact, the bid-ask spread, order book dynamics, and volatility. Comparisons to data yield some encouraging successes. This framework suggests a novel interpretation of financial information, in which agents are at best only weakly informed and all have a similar and extremely noisy impact on prices. Most of the processed information appears to come from supply and demand itself, rather than from external news. The ideas reviewed here are relevant to market microstructure regulation, agent-based models, cost-optimal execution strategies, and understanding market ecologies

Diachronic study of phonological changes in the Tiv language

    No full text
Abstract: All levels of language analysis are prone to changes in their phonology, morphology, graphology, lexis, semantics and syntax over the years. Tiv language is not an exception to this claim. This study investigates various aspects of phonological or sound changes in Tiv language. This paper therefore classifies sound changes in Tiv; states causes of sound changes in Tiv and explores implications of sound changes. The research design used in this paper is purposive sampling of relevant data. The instrument used in this paper is the observation method in which the author selected words that showed epenthesis, deletion and substitution. It has been noted that the use of archaic spellings in the Modern Tiv literatures shows their ancientness. Phonological change is not a deviation but a sign of language growth and changes in spellings result in changes in sounds. The author recommends that scholars should write papers or critical works on lexical/morphological, syntactic, semantic, graphological changes in Tiv language. Students should write projects, dissertations and theses on language change and diachronic linguistics. This study introduces Tiv historical linguistics and diachronic phonology which serve as catalysts for the study of Tiv language. The understanding of Tiv sound change provides students with a much better understanding of Tiv phonological system in general, of how Tiv phonology works and how the phonemes fit together
