Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Get PDFLa città di Fiume è una città di cultura, di storia e di tradizione. È una città dal passato austro-ungarico, dalla cultura mediterranea, italiana e croata. Infatti, Fiume, la Rijeka di oggi, è stata tanti anni sotto il governo italiano e da sempre nella città si parlava, si cucinava, si giocava, si scriveva e si cantava in italiano. L’italianità nella città è sempre stata presente. E anche oggi ci sono ancora parecchi abitanti che parlano il dialetto fiumano e anche l’italiano. Persone con l’accento un po’ strano che possono capirsi soltanto tra di loro perché nel resto del paese la loro lingua non si è mai capita.
Fiume è anche una città piena di tolleranza, lo è sempre stata. Quando fece parte dell’Austro-Ungheria a Fiume si potevano trovare sia ungheresi che italiani, croati, e anche tedeschi. Tutti vivevano insieme e in armonia. E anche se oggi non si sentono più così tante lingue per il Corso; un estraneo se venisse a vivere a Fiume sicuramente si sentirebbe benvenuto, proprio perché è forte il sentimento di tolleranza e armonia nella città. Oltre a questo, il mare, il Golfo del Quarnero con le isole Cherso e Veglia e quel pezzetto dell’Istria che si vede sotto il Monte Maggiore, fanno di Fiume una città mediterranea, calma e anche un po’ malinconica. Una città con l’aria fresca, salata, con questa vista che fa perdere il fiato.
"Fiume è una città di forti emozioni e abili commercianti, ma anche una città di piccoli uomini innamorati di se stessi, una città ai margini di civiltà più diverse e al centro della passione piccolo-borghese per la buona cucina e per la comodità pregna di torpore, una città di siluri e di belle donne, i cui volti rivelano la millenaria vita urbana. […] Un punto d’incontro e un punto di rottura, la città dal nome “acquatico”, con la gente che ha da sempre parlato in modo strano e abbastanza ibrido, come se stesse attenta a venire compresa correttamente, perché tante erano le lingue usate, che la probabilità di un fraintendimento era molto alta. (1)"
Fiume è tutto questo; è un sogno, sono le emozioni, è la gente comune con la loro lingua strana. E infine, Fiume è la mia città nativa. Ed è anche la città nativa di Osvaldo
Ramous.
Ecco perché ci unisce tanto questo amore per questa città, ci unisce perché entrambi la conosciamo benissimo. Io conosco la Fiume di oggi mentre lui conosceva la Fiume
dell’Asutria-Ungheria, la Fiume italiana, la Fiume della Reggenza del Carnaro e la Fiume Jugoslava.
Tutto è cominciato quando avevo preso in mano Il Cavallo di cartapesta, non potevo smettere di leggere il romanzo. Non ce la facevo perché proprio il modo, le parole, il dialetto, le vie; tutto, mi aveva attratto dentro la storia. Una storia vera e vissuta realmente che in un certo senso faceva anche parte di me. Tutto era descritto in un modo così semplice ma anche coraggioso, unico, piacevole tanto che mi veniva di continuo il sentimento di nostalgia. Si trattava di una nostalgia per una Fiume che non ho mai potuto incontrare.
Ed ecco perché infine ho scelto di scrivere proprio della Fiume di Ramous. Innanzitutto perché si tratta di una Fiume a me sconosciuta e poi anche perché è lui la persona e lo
scrittore che ha cercato di farla mantenere una città di cultura, soprattutto italiana, una città di tolleranza e aperta a nuovi capitoli per la città.
Osvaldo Ramous non solo ha scritto un ottimo romanzo che racconta la storia realmente accaduta della Fiume del Novecento, ma si è impegnato tantissimo a cogliere e
trasmettere la cultura italiana nella Jugoslavia e anche quella slava in Italia. Ha svolto l’enorme lavoro da traduttore, da mediatore tra le due culture e ha lasciato dietro a sé numerose opere della e per la sua Fiume.
Per spiegare meglio l’atmosfera e il periodo di grandissimo cambiamento di culture e lingue e di gente in cui Ramous visse, la prima parte della tesi presenta un breve profilo
storico della città di Fiume. Dopodiché c’è la biografia dell’autore con un commento del suo lavoro da traduttore e mediatore di culture. E una parte che raccoglie la poesia, i
testi inediti e i racconti nei quali Ramous nomina la sua Fiume e degli articoli scritti sulla rivista Panorama nei quali Ramous tratta di fatti relativi alla città. Infine ho
analizzato il motivo di Fiume nel suo romanzo prima e dopo le due grandi guerre

Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
