    The Robert F. Pitts Memorial Lectureships were founded in 1978, when the many friends and admirers of Robert Pitts established a fund in memory of that distinguished physiologist. The Lecturer is selected by the Renal Commission of the International Union of Physiological Sciences, with the Chair of Physiology at Cornell University Medical College acting ex officio. The Lecture is presented at each International Congress of Physiological Sciences. At the XXXI Congress held in Helsinki, Finland, the Pitts Lecturer was Professor Takeshi Hoshi, from Shizuoka, Japan. He delivered the lecture on July 13, 1989.There are several aspects about the choice of Professor Hoshi that seem singularly fitting. First and foremost, he is an outstanding physiologist who, like Robert Pitts, has contributed much to our understanding of renal function. Professor Hoshi, in a classical experiment with Sakai in the early sixties, showed for the first time that ions can cross the proximal tubule epithelium while avoiding the cytosol. These experiments which were concomitant with those of Windhager, Boulpaep and Giebisch, have been confirmed by others. The paracellular pathway for ion flow is now accepted as of paramount importance to the function of leaky epithelia. Then in 1968 Professor Hoshi with his coworkers discovered that glucose and sodium ions share a common mechanism as they enter the proximal tubular cells from the lumen during absorption. And shortly after he made similar findings concerning the relation between amino acids and sodium transport, and concerning the transport of other organic molecules and sodium. Again, these findings have been confirmed in other laboratories. These and other findings of Professor Hoshi contribute not only to a better knowledge of kidney function, but they have increased our understanding of the function of other epithelia as well.Professor Hoshi graduated from the School of Medicine ofTohoku University, Senday, and finished the Graduate Course in Physiology in 1954 in the same University, where he was an Instructor in Physiology until 1957 when he moved to the University of Tokyo. There in 1968 he became Professor of Physiology and Chairman until 1987. He then moved as Dean and Professor Emeritus of Physiology in the University of Shizuoka, Shizuoka. Professor Hoshi has been a Fulbright Scholar in the Laboratory of Professor Bodil Schmidt-Nielsen in Duke University in the United States. He has been scientific adviser to the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture of Japan.     This thesis "Hoshi Shin'ichi and the Genre Shto Shto" is addressed to the work of the author, who is in particular renowned for his so-called short short story production. This very genre, which I've intended to focus on with the thesis, has eventually become Hoshi's domain and he thus contributed to the treasure of both Japanese and world's literature by more than one thousand original stories, that have gained the micro-story form considerable popularity of readership as well as acknowledgement and appreciation of experts with broad range of themes, distinctive humour and contemplation on society's nature and future. In addition to abstracting the history and development, basic characteristic features and variety of both themes and genres of the microfiction form also other areas of author's beneficial activity and his personal life and background - that as if predestined him for a writer's path - can't be omitted

    Kω - Open-source library for the shifted Krylov subspace method of the form (zI - H)x = b

    We develop Kω, an open-source linear algebra library for the shifted Krylov subspace methods. The methods solve a set of shifted linear equations (z_k I - H)x^(k) = b (k = 0, 1, 2, ...) for a given matrix H and a vector b, simultaneously. The leading order of the operational cost is the same as that for a single equation. The shift invariance of the Krylov subspace is the mathematical foundation of the shifted Krylov subspace methods. Applications in materials science are presented to demonstrate the advantages of the algorithm over the standard Krylov subspace methods such as the Lanczos method. We introduce benchmark calculations of (i) an excited (optical) spectrum and (ii) intermediate eigenvalues by the contour integral on the complex plane. In combination with the quantum lattice solver HΦ, Kω can realize parallel computation of excitation spectra and intermediate eigenvalues for various quantum lattice models

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
