The clergy of the deaneries of Rochester and mailing in the diocese of Rochester, c. 1770 – 1870
Get PDFThis is a study of the concerns and life - style of the clergy of the established Church in two Kent Deaneries throughout the hundred year period, 1770 -1870. How far, it is considered, were episcopal hopes, which were expressed in the Charges of Bishop and Archdeacon, fulfilled in the parishes, especially in the matters of residence and education. The extent of non-residence is deduced from. such evidence as is available for the earlier part of the period and after 1830 from Visitation and other returns. The provision of Sunday Schools is used as an example of clerical response to a diocesan policy in the field of education. The exercise of patronage, residence, plurality, the length ofincumbencies, the employment of curates and their prospects, are looked at throughout the period. The provision of new churches, agrarian unrest, tithe and clerical emoluments, church rate, relationship with dissent, worship provision , the visitation process, the clergyman's role in society, the differing demands of town ministry and rural ministry are examined as events bring them to the fore . The priorities of successive bishops are noted and the lives of sample clergymen are taken for each period, both to flesh-out the statistics and to illustrate the evolving pattern of ministry
The life and works of James Miller, 1704-1744, with particular reference to the satiric content of his poetry and plays.
No full textPhDJames Miller was born the son of a Dorset rector in 1704. He
was himself ordained, but acquired no benefice until just before his
early death, probably because of a scathing portrayal of the Bishop
of London in one of his verse satires. At Oxford he wrote a vivacious
comedy of humours, set in the University. Its production in 1730
began his dramatic career, at a time when the number of London
theatres had just doubled, and new dramatic forms were being invented.
In 1731 his poem Harlequin-Horace, a witty inversion of
the Ars Poetica, attacked pantomime and opera, but also painted a
lively portrait of the entire theatrical world, in the tradition of
the Dunciad.
After collaborating in a translation of Moliere's works Miller
wrote two plays based on this author. Of all his dramatic works
these were the most successful with his contemporaries, and were
followed by a modernisation of Much Ado, and a ballad-opera adapted
from an afterpiece by Jean-Baptiste Rousseau, and rendered highly
topical. Miller made similar use of a recent French comedy showing
a Red Indian's reactions to civilisation, a satiric "fable" by Walsh
and Voltaire's Mahomet. A large quantity of original material was
incorporated into most of these, and this is generally satirical in
nature. The Indian is made to voice almost egalitarian sentiments.
An afterpiece, "The Camp Visitants", satirised military inaction
in the war, and was apparently banned. The manuscripts of the six
plays produced after the Licensing Act bear the examiner's deletions,
and illustrate the nature of the censorship at this time.
Miller's greatest strength is probably his flexible, vigorously
colloquial dialogue. His political satire is mostly contained in
the poetry, which attacks Walpole's administration with increasing
vehemence through the seventeen-thirties, until its fall. In 1740
two poems that used Pope in symbolic contrast to Walpole caused a
sensation. In both poetry and plays Miller is also a social satirist,
who lays unusually strong emphasis on false taste and the deterioration
of culture

No full textThis project hosts materials related to a Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI)-aligned scoping review protocol examining cultural adaptation among post-9/11 veterans from the Five Eyes nations (United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand) transitioning from military to civilian life. The review maps how cultural adaptation and related constructs have been defined, measured, and theorized across the literature. It also identifies impacts, interventions, and evidence gaps to guide future research, practice, and policy supporting veteran reintegration.

New Wave Objectivity & the Future of Journalistic Values
No full textabstract: In this work, I will explain how objectivity in relation to news has changed over the years and why “traditional” objectivity should no longer be a core journalistic standard. I will explore objectivity in the Information Age compared to its formation. I will address the prevalent issues of white privilege and implicit bias issues within the media. Objectivity has been the unrealistic standard for journalism in the United States for over 100 years, and the American public deserves accurate information. A new form of objectivity needs to be established that is more transparent of biases and affiliations, while pushing for inclusive and diverse reporting. As journalists, we need to be thinking of what the future of journalism should be and how we can better serve fellow citizens
Luxury and labour : ideas of labouring-class consumption in eighteenth-century England
Get PDFThis thesis examines changing ideas of labouring-class consumption in eighteenthcentury
England. Recent social and economic history has rewritten eighteenthcentury
England in terms of the formation of a commercial society. Against this
backdrop, intellectual and cultural historians have uncovered the formation of
concepts and practices appropriate for a civilised commercial society. Yet, in spite
of the growing evidence that they were increasingly participating in the
developing world of goods, little work has focused on the public discussion of the
labouring classes' consumer desires.
The study is based on the close analysis of pamphlet literature discussing
the labouring classes. It tracks the ideas through which the propertied classes
viewed labouring-class consumption and attempted to determine the exact status
and function of their desires in a commercial society. From within an early
eighteenth-century position which viewed the appetites of the poor as being a
species of luxury, the thesis tracks the emergence of categories and concepts that
made it possible to recognise the labouring classes' consumer desires as part of
commercial society's progressive development. In the later years of the century,
this optimism faded as the interests of capital accumulation and the demands of
labourers were increasingly recognised to be contradictory.
Ultimately, the thesis argues that we cannot understand the ideological
representation of the needs and desires of the poor without also tracing the
changing conceptualisation of their labour, in the same way that we cannot
understand the formation of a commercial society without reference to
proletarianisation and the attack on customary culture. The coalescing practices of
a commercial society, and their ideological expression, rested upon the ever
greater alienation of the labouring classes, from their human needs and powers

The Planetary Science Journal, 3(1), (2022): 22, https://doi.org/10.3847/psj/ac4493.Europa is a premier target for advancing both planetary science and astrobiology, as well as for opening a new window into the burgeoning field of comparative oceanography. The potentially habitable subsurface ocean of Europa may harbor life, and the globally young and comparatively thin ice shell of Europa may contain biosignatures that are readily accessible to a surface lander. Europa's icy shell also offers the opportunity to study tectonics and geologic cycles across a range of mechanisms and compositions. Here we detail the goals and mission architecture of the Europa Lander mission concept, as developed from 2015 through 2020. The science was developed by the 2016 Europa Lander Science Definition Team (SDT), and the mission architecture was developed by the preproject engineering team, in close collaboration with the SDT. In 2017 and 2018, the mission concept passed its mission concept review and delta-mission concept review, respectively. Bandanas and blue helmets : an analysis of United Nations-insurgent relations after the Cold War
No full textThis is an examination of a neglected class of relations that have become more common after the Cold War, those between the United Nations and sub-State insurgent groups. This relationship has changed significantly after the end of the Cold War, both in the nature and frequency of the United Nations' response, and in the character of the insurgents that are addressed. Observing a
strong influence of realism in both the motivations of insurgent actions and in
the determinants and constraints of United Nations security initiatives, this study hypothesises that the predominant determinant of the effectiveness of
United Nations-insurgent interactions is an essential concurrence in their approaches to the interaction. The research design develops an analytical framework of approach indicators to test the validity of this hypothesis across a range of United Nations-insurgent interactions. Those interactions chosen for analysis are Mediation; Peacekeeping, including Monitoring Ceasefires, Humanitarian Peacekeeping; and Disarmament and Demobilisation; and Election Monitoring. United Nations interactions with contemporary insurgent movements - the FMLN, the Khmer Rouge, the Bosnian Serbs, Renamo, the USC-SNA, the Contras, and Unita - are chosen according to their operational
viability in order to fully test the hypothesised relationship. The general
support for the hypothesis revealed by the analysis suggests important conclusions for the planning and conduct of United Nations initiatives, which are increasingly being called on since the Cold War to intervene in civil wars
Theories of collective intelligence and decision-making: Towards a viable united nations intelligence system
No full textThe idea of a United Nations (UN) intelligence system is widely misunderstood and debates about it seem to be both misplaced and anecdotal. The lack of a consistent theory on intelligence has fostered the widely held view that such a system is not feasible or incompatible with the UN collective security system. This dissertation takes as its central thesis, the question, of whether an intelligence system is both desirable and feasible within the UN structure. In spite of the fact that no known study has so far engaged with the subject matter at the depth presented in this dissertation, the study advances the concept of collective intelligence, and its implications for managing international conflicts.
The dissertation examines existing barriers in efforts to interface intelligence system with the UN structure, and proposes that, with suitable refinements, the concept of intelligence need not be incompatible with the UN system. It is also argued that these constraints should not preclude
evolutionary changes to include an intelligence system that is compatible with an organisation such as the UN. By developing a concept of collective intelligence, the thesis proposes theoretical frameworks that suggest a potential nature of a viable intelligence capability within the UN. The analysis is developed normatively and conceptually, which lead to a further conclusion that the UN already possesses an intelligence capability which exists in manner that is not recognised. The lack of scholarly efforts to ground such a system on a reasonable framework creates a vacuum in the study of
international organisations, and in particular the United Nations system. At a minimum, this
dissertation fills this gap
