Notes on the herpetofauna of Surinam : I. Itinerary of a herpetological collecting trip in Surinam in 1968
No full textSince a few years the present author has been engaged in a study of the herpetofauna of Surinam, which resulted in a few publications (Hoogmoed 1967, 1969a, b). In early 1968, a grant was obtained from WOTRO (Netherlands Foundation for the Advancement of Tropical Research, grant W956-2) which enabled me to undertake a seven months collecting trip in Surinam.
From the start the purpose was to obtain specimens from several localities in the interior, as the coastal area was thought to be fairly well explored.
Moreover, other important goals were to obtain information on the ecology and colours of the living animals and, in the case of the frogs and toads, to make sound records.
As a well developed road system in Surinam only exists near the coast and between Paramaribo and the Brokopondo artificial lake, the localities in the interior have to be reached by boat or by air. Because of the short duration of my stay I had to make use of airtransportation to rapidly reach places in the interior, from there making short trips in the surroundings either on foot or by boat. Thus the assembling of a representative collection from various parts of the country could be attempted.

On the presence of Rana ridibunda ridibunda Pallas in the Netherlands
No full textSince long there has been a dispute whether in the Netherlands there occur one or two species of green frogs of the genus Rana. There has never been any doubt concerning the presence of Rana esculenta Linnaeus, a species widely distributed throughout the country (Van de Bund, 1964, 1968). The first to mention Rana ridibunda ridibunda Pallas from the Netherlands were Van Kampen & Heimans ( 1927), who observed that they saw a specimen of Rana esculenta var. ridibunda from Den Horn in the province of Groningen.
Unfortunately they did not state where the specimen was deposited and no such specimen could be found in the collections of the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie (RMNH) in Leiden or in the Instituut voor Taxonomische Zoölogie in Amsterdam. Since that time there have been several additional records of the species. Van Wijk (1946, 1947, 1951) recorded the species from the provinces of Groningen, Zuid-Holland and Limburg. However, these data are not very reliable as they were based on field-observations by untrained people, mainly persons who keep reptiles and amphibians as pets. The material on which their observations were based was not available for examination, so the identifications could not be checked. Van Wijk (1947, 1951) also stated that he had received specimens from Groningen which he identified as R. ridibunda. As the characters he used to distinguish between the green frogs were correct, his identification probably was correct too. Unfortunately, also this material is not available for examination. The next author dealing with this problem is Van de Bund (1964), who gives more details concerning the localities of the specimens previously recorded by Van Wijk (1946, 1947, 1951): Groningen (Groningen, Haren, Eelde), Zuid-Holland (Sassenheim, Schiedam), Limburg (Meerssen). No full textThree years of fieldwork in the El Manteco region by the junior author formed the basis for the checklist presented here. Among the frogs assembled is a small species of Ololygon, new to science, also found in Guyana and Surinam. The anuran succession in the temporary lagoons, formed during the rainy season, was studied during three years and a consistent pattern was found. Comparisons with the llanos fauna are made and it is concluded that the El Manteco region contains a relatively large percentage of Amazonian elements, absent from the llanos
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Rediscovery of a type of Ceratophrys boiei Wied (Amphibia: Anura: Leptodactylidae)
No full textDuring routine curatorial duties some specimens of Proceratophrys boiei (Wied) were encountered in the collection of the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, Leiden. Upon comparison with the original description one of them proved to be one of Wied's original two specimens. It is here selected as lectotype of Ceratophrys Boiei Wied.
