Q fever: Underdiagnosed in Hong Kong?
No full textWe report the first imported case of chronic Q fever with multi-organ involvement seen in Hong Kong. Although the disease is found worldwide, its chronic form is very rare in our locality. Familiarity with the clinical presentation, useful diagnostic tools, and appropriate treatment is necessary for the prevention of the serious morbidity and mortality associated with chronic Q fever. To the best of our knowledge, this article represents the first comprehensive review to compare the local experience with Q fever with international data, and establishes a management approach for this unusual infectious disease while suggesting possible explanations for its exceptionally low incidence in this locality.link_to_subscribed_fulltex

q-Differential equations for q-classical polynomials and q-Jacobi-Stirling numbers

This study is motivated by their key role in the (reciprocal) expansion of any power of a second order
q-differential operator having the q-classical polynomials as eigenfunctions in terms of other even order operators,
which we explicitly construct in this work. The results here obtained can be viewed as the q-version of
those given by Everitt et al. and by the first author, whilst the combinatorics of this new set of numbers is a
q-version of the Jacobi–Stirling numbers given by Gelineau and the second author
Hong Kong Output Dynamics: An Empirical Analysis
No full textAdvanced statistical techniques are used to analyze Hong Kong output dynamics. Hong Kong, Japan and the U.S. are found to share some common long-term and short-term cyclical variations. While the Hong Kong economy is susceptible to external shocks and Granger-caused by the other two economies, local factors account for a large proportion of output growth variability and are mainly responsible for her output uncertainty. On the transmission mechanism, the selected trade and financial variables have incremental explanatory power but do not lessen the ability of domestic and foreign output variables to explain Hong Kong growth dynamics. Activation of nicotinic receptors contributes to acetylcholine-induced endothelium-dependent relaxations in the aorta of the spontaneous hypertensive rat
No full textAcetylcholine causes both endothelium-dependent relaxations and contractions in the rat aorta. Both muscarinic (mAChRs) and nicotinic (nAChRs) acetylcholine receptors are expressed in endothelial cells. The Q theory of investment: does uncertainty matter
No full textThis paper includes uncertainty in the Q-model of investment. A structural Q-type investment model is derived, which contains the information on uncertainty effects of random variables that affect the future profitability of a firm. We use a panel of 82 Dutch firms to test whether the presence of uncertainty affects the performance of the Q-model. Our evidence shows that the volatility of profits and the volatility of the interest rate influence investment apart from Q. Moreover, the presence of uncertainty factors changes the structural parameters of the Q-model of investment. The results suggest that the unsatisfactory empirical performance of the standard Q-model of investment may be due to the omission of uncertainty considerations. In addition, Dutch firm-level evidence shows that severe uncertainty effects are associated with small firms and highly indebted firms, which are more likely to be in financial distress. This provides indirect evidence that the wedge between external financing and internal financing aggravates the effect of uncertainty on investment.

Coda Q estimates in the Hong Kong region
No full textComplementing a series of recent seismic hazard studies for Hong Kong, we have estimated the Q factor using 25 local earthquakes, within 200 km of Hong Kong, digitally recorded from January 1998 to July 2000 by eight short-period stations of the Hong Kong Observatory seismic monitoring network. By analyzing the coda wave at frequencies 2-20 Hz, we obtained a Q-f relation of Q=256f 0.7. The values of Q 0 (Q at 1 Hz) determined for three distance ranges (R) are 224 for R≤50 km, 342 for 50<R<100 km and 262 for 100≤R≤200 km. The results are consistent with the spatial variations of the Q factor in the wider region of South China. The results fill an important gap in knowledge about the Q factor and associated crustal attenuation conditions in the Pearl River Delta region including Hong Kong, and provide useful insight into the influence of epicentral distance range in coda-Q measurements, allowing better understanding of the degree of complexity in the crustal structure of the region. © 2004 Elsevier Ltd.
