    Smart water grid: desalination water management platform

    This paper presents a desalination process powered by a microgrid. Desalination is critically important for many countries demanding potable water beyond that available in nature. The desalination process requires a stable power supply system. As the stable power supply system, microgrid, which is a distributed small capacity power system integrating renewable energy with energy storage, has become important. In this paper, small capacity desalination plant powered by a microgrid is implemented and its features are described. The desalination plant is operated by electricity provided from either renewable energy resource such as solar cell or power grid. Overall control of the desalination plant is carried out by a programmable logic controller and status of water production is monitored by energy management system. The implemented desalination plant consumes 5kW and produces 1m(3)/h of fresh water

    Optimal Power Management for Nanogrids Based on Technical Information of Electric Appliances

    A novel power management for nanogrids is presented. In this paper, effect of resident location in residence is taken into account for evaluation of power consumption in nanogrids. Depending on the resident location, operating conditions of heater, ventilation fan, and air-conditioner are adjusted. Electric appliances that allow delayed use, i.e., shiftable, are scheduled for efficient power management. Considering massive deployment of energy storage system (ESS) as a supplementary power source, effect of the ESS on power management is investigated. Demand response program for reduced electricity cost is also considered for power management. As a result, an objective consisting of power consumed by non-shiftable and shiftable electric appliances, power supplied/consumed by the ESS during discharging/charging, and time-varying electricity cost is formulated. Another objective for power management is a function of delays in scheduling of shiftable electric appliances. Variation of resident location combined with temporal use of electric appliances according to the resident location are considered as the resident behavior and incorporated into these two objectives. Using these two objectives, a multi-objective optimization is performed for nanogrids at each time interval. It is demonstrated by simulations that leveraging resident behavior is beneficial for power management of nanogrids. In addition, effects of the number of residents in each apartment and combined activity of each resident on the power management are presented with related simulation results. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V.     Batch Prioritization in Multigoal Reinforcement Learning

    In multigoal reinforcement learning, an agent interacts with an environment and learns to achieve multiple goals. The goal-conditioned policy is trained to effectively generalize its behavior for multiple goals. During training, the experiences collected by the agent are randomly sampled from a replay buffer. Because biased sampling of achieved goals affects the success rate of a given task, it should be avoided by considering the valid goal space, introduced here as the set of goals to achieve, and the current competence of the policy. To this end, a novel prioritization method for creation of batches, e.g., collections of samples, is proposed. Candidate batches are sampled and associated with costs; in each iteration the batch with the minimum cost is chosen to train the policy. The cost function is modeled by an intended goal, which is proposed as a hypothetical goal that the policy is trying to learn in each cycle, and the information of the valid goal space. The minimum cost of the batch selected for each iteration decreases throughout training as the policy learns to achieve goals near the center of the valid goal space. The proposed batch prioritization method is combined with hindsight experience replay (HER) for experiments in robotic control tasks presented in the OpenAI gym suite to demonstrate learning performance comparable to that of other state-of-the-art prioritization methods. As a result, the proposed batch prioritization method can achieve improved learning performance in 4 out of 5 tasks, particularly for harder tasks. The experimental results suggest that the proposed method for the creation of training batches, using the valid goal space information and current competence of the policy, can enhance learning performance in multigoal tasks with high-dimensional goal space.

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
