They estimated recruitment for 33 packs over 92 pack-years and survival for 23 litters from 13 packs. Mean annual pup recruitment was 1.27 pups per pack, and mean annual pup survival was 0.29. They observed that annual wolf pup recruitment and survival rates varied substantially among years and packs, which was likely a result of differences in food availability and the ability of breeding animals to acquire sufficient prey to provision dependent pups. They found that pup survival was negatively related to litter size. Although most (71%) wolf pups born during the study did not survive their first biological year, the population remained relatively stable, suggesting that recruitment rates were sufficient to sustain the high-density wolf population over time.     2024-2025 Greater Voyageurs Ecosystem Wolf Population Report

    During April 2024–April 2025, we studied the wolf population in the Greater Voyageurs Ecosystem (GVE), Minnesota to understand wolf population dynamics and how changes in population dynamics are connected to or influence predation behavior, wolf pup survival, and changes in prey density. To estimate wolf population size and assess wolf population dynamics, we used locations from GPS-collared wolves to estimate the size and distribution of wolf territories in the GVE, and deployed 378 trail cameras across the GVE from December 1, 2024 to April 10, 2025. We estimate wolf population density in the Greater Voyageurs Ecosystem was 44.7 wolves/1000 km2 in 2024–2025, a 19% decrease in wolf population density from last year (2023–2024 density: 55.1 wolves/1000 km2) and a 31% decrease from two years ago (2022–2023 density: 64.8 wolves/1000 km2). Average pack size in 2024–2025 was 4.05 wolves/pack, a slight decrease from 2022–2023 and 2023–2024 when average pack size was 4.2 wolves/pack and 4.3 wolves/pack respectively. Thus, the decrease in wolf population density can be attributed predominantly to a substantial increase in territory size in combination with a considerable decrease in recruitment.     Dataset for Gable et al. 2023 where the authors describe how wolves indirectly alter the trajectory of forests by constraining the distance that beavers, a central place forager and prolific ecosystem engineer, forage from water. Specifically, Gable et al. demonstrate wolves wait-in-ambush and kill beavers on longer feeding trails than would be expected based on the spatiotemporal availability of beavers. This pattern is driven by temporal dynamics of beaver foraging: beavers make more foraging trips and spend more time on land per trip on longer feeding trails that extend farther from water. As a result, beavers are more vulnerable on longer feeding trails than shorter ones. Wolf predation appears to be a selective evolutionary pressure propelled by consumptive and non-consumptive mechanisms that constrain the distance from water beavers forage, which in turn limits the area of forest around wetlands, lakes, and rivers beavers alter through foraging.     Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Sediment Runoff Fingerprinting Using Pollen

    Lake Macatawa is a hypereutrophic flooded river mouth in southwest Michigan. The lake has very high amounts of nutrientrich sediment from non-point sources throughout the watershed. The Macatawa watershed project seeks to identify where the non-point sediment sources are and manage those areas of the watershed that produce the most runoff sediment. Forty-six sediment collectors were placed in rivers, creeks and ditches throughout the watershed. In this way sediment was collected in peak runoff periods when a high amount of sediment was being washed off of the surrounding land. As a part of the sediment fingerprinting analysis, the project seeks to identify the non-point sediment sources with biologicals, specifically pollen grains. Pollen is extracted from sediment collected throughout the watershed. Using a scanning electron microscope, the pollen is identified by plant type, plant genus, or plant species. Proportions of pollen grain type are compared to vegetation proportions upstream of the sediment collector to identify source locations

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
