The modernist angel: Art at the Limits of the Human in D. H. Lawrence, H. D. and Mina Loy

    No full text
PhDThe subject of this thesis is a figure that might provisionally be called the *modemist angel'. Focusing on modernist literature, and more particularly on the work of D. H. Lawrence, H. D. and Mina Loy, it aims to isolate from the many angels found in all periods and all types of art a historically specific and intellectually coherent paradigm: an angel of and for its modernist times. A figure of precisely this type could be said to exist in the form of Walter Benjamin's 'angel of history'. Critics who address the question of the modern angel in texts by Franz Kafka and Rainer Maria Rilke often do so in conjunction with the problem posed by the angel of history. Beginning with a chapter on Benjamin, this thesis nevertheless follows a different trajectory. Over five chapters, it explores a modernist landscape formed not only by Lawrence, H. D. and Loy, but also by European and American writers such as A. R. Orage, Allen Upward, Ezra Pound, Wallace Stevens, Havelock Ellis, Edward Carpenter, Sigmund Freud and Friedrich Nietzsche. Although the angel that emerges from this investigation might, in some respects, be said to anticipate Benjamin's later version, this figure is also very different, standing for a project that is distinctively, and recognisably, modernist in nature. He/she (the sex of the modernist angel is often open to question) represents an attempt to reconcile the divine responsibilities of the artist with the material and gendered conditions of being, specifically of being human, in the modem world. This thesis looks again at the clash of intellectual paradigms in the early-twentieth century - notably, the confrontation of the Romantic view of art as a superhuman or sacred undertaking with the psychoanalytical or evolutionary idea that all human endeavour is underpinned by sub-human motives - and suggests the angel as a new and instructive figure through which to think the perilous limits between the human and the divine in modernist literature

Taking character seriously: towards a theory of virtue in organizations

    No full text
A widespread belief among moral philosophers holds that ethics is concerned fundamentally with questions of right and wrong actions. There is also a popular view among social scientists that the key subject matter of business ethics is ethical decision-making and ethical behavior. This is not a dissertation about rights, wrongs, and obligations. It is not a dissertation about ethical decision-making or behavior either. For the moral life is much more than principles and rules. And the morality of business involves much more than right and wrong decision and conduct. The purpose of this dissertation is to contribute to the development of a theory of virtue in organizations that takes character seriously. It relies on the stipulation that moral traits of character are ethically more basic than moral principles. We are to understand what it is to behave virtuously through studying the nature and tendencies of the virtuous person. The contribution of this dissertation to the status quaestionis in business ethics research is fourfold. First, it offers an original account of why normative theories must be psychologically realistic in the field of business ethics by elaborating on the old philosophical dictum that 'ought implies can.' Second, this dissertation articulates an account of virtue that is distinctively character-based--preserving the primacy of character in normative theorizing--and provides a conceptual analysis of character traits--which is necessary to grant virtue ascriptions and understand the individual differences that underlie trait attributions. Third, this dissertation supplies ten decisive arguments to refute the situationist attack and the empirical evidence on the existence of virtues and character traits. Fourth, this dissertation offers an account of role virtues that can successfully deal with the problem of role morality by integrating the demands of social affiliations, institutions, and universal values, which are not characteristically in conflict.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical references (p. 300-340)by Miguel Angel Alzol

Spirituality and mixed-blood identity: a comparative study of Miguel Angel Asturias and Leslie Marmon Silko

In this thesis I propose that the texts of Guatemalan author Miguel Angel Asturias and the North American Native author Leslie Marmon Silko can be compared and interpreted from the perspective of spirituality. I approach both mixed-blood authors as mediating a spiritually-centred contemporary identity. They revalue and update the spiritual teachings in the myths of their Meso-American-Anasazi ancestral heritages. A cross-cultural reading of mythical quests, indigenous sacred texts, Western mysticism, and the universal heroic paradigm discloses a universal recognition of the need to maintain order and balance between spirituality and materiality. An examination of contemporary Native and Latin American literary studies demonstrates that the dominant Western perspective creates a static view of indigenous people and a materialistic lifestyle which alienates individuals from the spirituality of their ancestors. I conclude that Asturias' and Silko's mediation of their multiple heritages provides a necessary re-valuing of Western and indigenous epistemologies. The mythical and sacred sources restore balance and unity in the individual and create a viable basis for contemporary mixed-blood and mixed-heritage identity. The original print copy of this thesis may be available here: http://wizard.unbc.ca/record=b120383

El carnaval en Mulata de tal de Miguel Angel Asturias

    No full text
This thesis tries to circumscribe the carnavalesque narrative strategies that Miguel Angel Asturias (1899-1974) uses in Mulata de tal (1963) to project his pessimistic vision of the social, cultural and religious mixing in Guatemala. The purpose of our work is to make an interpretation of the novel through the analysis of the carnavalesque elements of the work. To achieve this goal, we base our analysis on the Russian critic Mikhail M. Bakhtin's theories of the literary carnavalization and the dialogical principle, which we describe in the first chapter. In the following chapter we examine the formal and semantic components of the novel. In the third chapter we analyse the contrasting and deformed images that represent the social, cultural and religious mixing. Finally, in the fourth chapter we study the different social languages which the author stylizes or parodies to express his ideas in a refracted manner

migariane/eltmle: ELTMLE: Stata module for Ensemble Learning Targeted Maximum Likelihood Estimation

eltmle: Ensemble Learning Targeted Maximum Likelihood Estimation (Implementation for Stata software) Modern Epidemiology has been able to identify significant limitations of classic epidemiological methods, like outcome regression analysis, when estimating causal quantities such as the average treatment effect (ATE) or the causal odds ratio, for observational data. For example, using classical regression models to estimate the ATE requires making the assumption that the effect measure is constant across levels of confounders included in the model, i.e. that there is no effect modification. Other methods do not require this assumption, including g-methods (e.g. the g-formula) and targeted maximum likelihood estimation (TMLE). The latter estimator has the advantage of being doubly robust. Moreover, TMLE allows the inclusion of machine learning algorithms to minimize the risk of model misspecification, a problem that persists for competing estimators. Evidence shows that TMLE typically provides the least unbiased estimates of the ATE compared with other double robust estimators. The following link provides access to a TMLE tutorial: http://migariane.github.io/TMLE.nb.html eltmle is a Stata program implementing the targeted maximum likelihood estimation for the ATE for a binary or continuous outcome and binary treatment. Future implementations will offer more general settings. eltmle includes the use of a "Super Learner" called from the SuperLearner package v.2.0-21 (Polley E., et al. 2011). The Super-Learner uses V-fold cross-validation (10-fold by default) to assess the performance of prediction regarding the potential outcomes and the propensity score as weighted averages of a set of machine learning algorithms. We used the default SuperLearner algorithms implemented in the base installation of the tmle-R package v.1.2.0-5 (Susan G. and Van der Laan M., 2017), which included the following: i) stepwise selection, ii) generalized linear modeling (glm), iii) a glm variant that included second order polynomials and two-by-two interactions of the main terms included in the model. Installation note To install eltmle directly from github you need to use a Stata module for installing Stata packages from GitHub, including previous releases of a package. You can install the latest version of the github command by executing the following code in your Stata session. Note: you need a Stata version greater or equal than 13.2, otherwise you can install the package manually downloading the files from the Github repository and placing it in your Stata ADO PERSONAL folder: net install github, from("https://haghish.github.io/github/") then, you can install eltmle simply using the following code in Stata: 1) Please, read carefully the help file before using eltmle in Stata): github install migariane/eltmle .which eltmle .help eltmle For both, MAC and Windows users, in case you want to uninstall the package type: .ado uninstall eltmle Authors [Author and Developer] Miguel Angel Luque-Fernandez, LSHTM, NCDE, ICON Group, London, UK Email: [email protected] [Developer] Camille Maringe, LSHTM, NCDE, ICON Group, London, UK Email: [email protected] Contributors [Intellectual advice and suggestions for improvement] Michael Schomaker, CIDER, UCT, Cape Town, South Africa Email: michael.schomaker at uct.ac.za Mireille E. Spanish Abridged Life Tables by sex, age, and socioeconomic status, 2011-2013 <p>An ordinary <strong>life table</strong> is a statistical tool that summarizes the mortality experience of a population and yields information about longevity and life expectation. Life tables in <em>population-based cancer epidemiology</em> are an important tool used to compute the net survival or probability of dying due to cancer in a given population. Complete life tables are published by sex and age at a national level on a regular basis. Furthermore, because background mortality can vary widely by socioeconomic status, it is desirable to be able to produce life tables specific to these populations in order to better understand how mortality varies within them. To be able to produce net survival estimates by socioeconomic status life tables by sex, age and socioeconomic status are needed.</p> <p>Using Spanish population and mortality data by census tract level, age, calendar year, and the quintiles (where Q5 represents the most deprived areas and Q1 the less deprived areas) of the Spanish Deprivation Index (SDI) (an index created using data from the Spanish 2011 census conducted by the Spanish National Statistics Institute), we created the first abridged Spanish Life Tables by deprivation for the period 2011-2013.</p> <p>This repository provides the code to reproduce the creation of the first smoothed life tables containing age specific deprivation standardised mortality rates and life expectancy, by sex, age groups, deprivation quintile and census tract in Spain 2011-2013. <strong>"Smoothed life tables"</strong> were created, using restricted cubic splines in an exponential flexible mixed effects Poisson regression model [1,2].</p> <ol> <li><p>Rachet, B., Maringe, C., Woods, L.M. et al.
