The impact of attachment anxiety on susceptibility to false memories
Previous research shows that people's attachment styles predict memory functioning. For example, people with relatively insecure attachment styles tend to forget relationship-relevant information, as well as negatively bias their emotional evaluations of interpersonal experiences over time. An emerging body of research has also begun to suggest that attachment anxiety in particular relates to people's propensity to experience false memories. The present dissertation describes two randomized experiments which attempted to examine a causal link between attachment anxiety and false memories. Furthermore, the present studies attempted to isolate whether attachment anxiety causes false memories during memory maintenance or retrieval processes.
Participants were primed with either (1) high attachment anxiety, (2) low attachment anxiety, or (3) were not primed prior to retrieval (Study 1) or during maintenance (Study 2). The experimental primes had no main effects on false memories in either study. This may indicate that attachment anxiety does not cause false memories during maintenance or reconstruction. However, future research should explore whether attachment anxiety might cause false memories during encoding processes. Alternatively, it may be the case that the priming paradigms used failed to appropriately manipulate participants' attachment security, which would render the present findings ambiguous. Global optometrist research ranking derived from a science-wide author database of standardised citation indicators
Publications in refereed scientific journals provide a rigorous research base that underpins clinical optometric practice. Leading optometrists who generate this literature can be identified and ranked using standardised citation indicators. This work seeks to identify and rank all optometrists included in a Science-Wide author database of standardised citation indicators (S-W) and to compare this ranking with the Global Optometrist Top 200 Research Ranking (T200). A search was conducted for the names of all optometrists in the T200 who were included in the S-W, which is a world-wide listing of the top 2% of scientists in each of 174 subfield disciplines, ranked according to a composite citation indicator (cns) that excludes self-citations and corrects for multiple authorships and author order. The names of 66 optometrists are found in the S-W. Of these, 58 are designated as working in the primary sub-field ‘Ophthalmology & Optometry’; this listing, in rank-order of cns, is referred to as the ‘S-W-derived Optometrist Research Ranking’ (S-WORR). Australian optometrist Nathan Efron is ranked #1 in the S-WORR. The number (%) of optometrists in the S-WORR from each country is: the United States – 26 (45%), Australia – 12 (21%), the United Kingdom – 11 (19%), Canada – 5 (9%), Spain – 2 (3%), Hong Kong – 1 (2%) and South Africa – 1 (2%). The universities housing the equal highest number of optometrists in the S-WORR (five each) are the University of California, Berkeley, USA; the University of New South Wales, Australia; and Queensland University of Technology, Australia. There is a moderately strong correlation between T200 and S-WORR rankings (ρ = 0.6017, N = 58, p The S-WORR represents an elite cohort of optometrists who ought to be celebrated for their outstanding, leading and impactful contributions to optometric research.</p

Big Data, Big Libraries, Big Problems?: the 2014 LibTech Anti-talk?
The desire to create automatons is a familiar theme in human history, and during the age of the Enlightenment mechanical automatons became not only an “emblem of the cosmos”, but a symbol of man’s confidence that he would unlock nature’s greatest mysteries and fully harness her power. And yet only a century later, automatons had begun to represent human repression and servitude, a theme later picked up by writers of science fiction. Man’s confidence undeterred, the endgame of the modern scientific and technological mindset, or MSTM, seems to be increasingly coming into view with the rise of “information technology” in general and “Big data” in particular. Along with those who wield them, these can be seen as functioning together as a “mechanical muse” of sorts – surprisingly alluring – and, like a physical automaton can serve as a symbol – a microcosm – of what the MSTM sees (at the very least in practice) as the cosmic machine, our “final frontier”. And yet, individuals who unreflectively participate in these things – giving themselves over to them and seeking the powers afforded by the technology apart from technology’s rightful purposes – in fact yield to the same pragmatism and reductionism those wielding them are captive to. Thus, they ultimately nullify themselves philosophically, politically, and economically – their value increasingly being only the data concerning their persons, and its perceived usefulness. Likewise libraries, the time-honored place of, and symbol for, the intellectual flowering of the individual, will, insofar as they spurn the classical liberal arts (with the idea that things are intrinsically good, and in the case of humans, special as well) in favor of the alluring embrace of MSTM-driven “information technology” and Big data - unwittingly contribute to their irrelevance and demise as they find themselves increasingly less needed, valued, wanted. 17TH-CENTURY ENGLAND IN THE RELATIONSHIP OF NATHAN SCHRÖDER FROM GDAŃSK
The aim of this article is to present Nathan Schröder’s voyage to England as described in his travel diary. A citizen of Gdansk, Schröder embarked on an educational and cognitive journey to England in the seventeenth century. This article analyses the diary to recreate Schröder’s ideas of the country as well as his actual experiences traveling throughout it. In addition to the facts and objective observations he recorded, Schröder’s journal contains his impressions, feelings, judgments and subjective opinions. The author of the diary chooses the places he deemed worthy of seeing, but also interprets and presents the reality of his visit to England as he experienced it

The negative stereotypization of East European Jews by assimilated West European Jews had both social and ideological grounds, and resulted from viewing East European Jews as a group of alien identity, that is of dissimilar language, culture and customs. The aim of the paper is to characterize the negative stereotype of East European Jews on the basis of analysis of Nathan Birnbaum’s press articles that attempted to break with this stereotype. The author focuses on the investigation of problems related to Ashkenazi identity in its general context and analyses these of its aspects that most frequently become the source of negative ethnic stereotypes, namely religious, linguistic and cultural
Synthesis and characterization of conducting polymer actuators

The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.Includes bibliographical references.Conducting polymers are known to mechanically respond to electrochemical stimuli and have been utilized as linear actuators. To date, the most successful mechanism for actuation is ionic ingress and egress, though mechanisms based on conformational changes and molecular interactions have also been proposed. In the pursuit of new conducting polymer actuators it is necessary to design, synthesize, and characterize new materials, spanning scientific disciplines from synthetic chemistry to materials and mechanical engineering. As such, the topics of synthesis and characterization of new conducting polymers are discussed, highlighting developments in techniques and instrumentation. Actuation in poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene), or PEDOT, and composites of PEDOT and carbon nanotubes is presented, demonstrating strains of 4.5% and strain rates of 0.2% per second with faster responses generated in carbon nanotube composites. Actuation in poly(3-hexylthiophene) is presented, demonstrating the observation of a novel actuation mechanism relating the potential of the polymer to the mechanical response. Further study of the actuation of polypyrrole at temperatures above 25°C is also discussed, in which response times decrease and magnitudes increase with temperature. Discrete time models of equivalent circuits and diffusion are utilized to predict conducting polymer actuator performance.by Nathan A. Vandesteeg.Ph.D
