Interview with Cathy Ulrich
This spring, the students in UND’s ENGL 414 workshop (The Art of Writing Fiction) read a collection of micro and flash fictions titled Ghosts of You, by Cathy Ulrich. With its use of second person and a penchant for turning tropes of crime fiction on their heads, this book is a must read. Three ENGL 414 students had the opportunity to interview the author via email to discuss Cathy Ulrich’s intentions in Ghosts of You, as well as her own personal writing techniques. Annie Hollis, adult education, and the development of socialist political culture on the prairies, 1917 to 1938
Annie Hollis was prominent in the agrarian left for almost two decades, yet her name has nearly escaped the historical inventory. She, along with hundreds of now relatively anonymous farm men and women, struggled against the particular forms of capitalism and patriarchy that dominated the people of Saskatchewan in the 1920s and 1930s. the institutions they developed in the course of their struggle still shape the political and social structure of Western Canada. This study will look at one woman and her praxis as an adult educator. By examining how she integrated her philosophy into action, and her experience into theory, Annie Hollis can be seen as one of the organic intellectuals of the prairie farm movement, who educated – and were educated – through the organizations they founded to change their world. This is not meant to be a biography of the great (wo)man genre, but an example of one person shaped by her own history, who in turn helped shape the course of history. By examining her life and the ways she worked, adult educators of today can take encouragement and inspiration. The role of clay mineral reactions in supplying trace elements for diagenesis and mineralisation within the Lower Carboniferous Limestone of the Pennine Basin and North Wales Platform
The Derbyshire-East Midlands Platform and Askrigg Platform of northern England, and the North Wales Platform all host economic volumes of Pb-Zn-F-Ba-Cu mineralisation within Lower Carboniferous (Dinantian) platform limestones. This mineralisation is coeval with high volumes of calcite cementation, localised dolomitisation, and minor volumes of hydrocarbon. The tectono-stratigraphic framework for the region has been described in detail by Fraser and Gawthorpe (2003). Carbonate sedimentation took place in the Dinantian upon the footwalls of NE-SW and E-W trending Caledonian lineaments, which were reactivated by back-arc extension north of the Variscan Orogen. Within the hanging wall, more rapid subsidence created deep water basins that accumulated carbonate sediment shed from the platform margins and very fine grained siliciclastics. Progradation of turbidite-fronted siliciclastic systems in the Namurian led to deposition of a thick succession of organic-rich mudstones and shales within the basins as carbonate sedimentation waned. On the Derbyshire Platform, field, petrographical and geochemical fingerprinting of calcite cements that heal NE-SW and NW-SE trending fractures has revealed the intergrowth of calcite cements within cross-cutting fractures with increasing volumes of hydrocarbon, galena, barite, fluorite and sphalerite (Hollis and Walkden, 2002). Fluid inclusion and stable isotope data indicate precipitation of these cements took place from progressively hotter fluids, with the greatest volume of mineralisation associated with the penultimate, Zone 4C, calcite cement at temperatures up to 200oC. Building on a number of previous studies, Hollis and Walkden (2002) proposed that many of the metals for mineralisation were sourced from organic matter and clays within the mid-Carboniferous mudstones and shales within the adjacent basin. Evidence for this includes higher than average concentrations of Pb, Zn, F and Cu within Namurian shales within these basins. Fluid inclusion temperatures and stable isotope result data from calcite cements on the Derbyshire Platform suggest that dolomitisation and mineralisation was initiated as the basins entered the oil window, and clay transformations such as smectite to illite were initiated. The main stage of mineralisation appears to have been coincident with the onset of basin inversion in the late Carboniferous to Permian.In this context, a model is presented whereby trace elements for carbonate diagenetic reactions and mineralisation on the Derbyshire Platform were released from clay minerals, feldspar, mica and organic matter within the basin and transported as halogen-complexes and/or complexed within petroleum. Data from the Manx-Furness and Bowland Basins, adjacent to the North Wales and Askrigg Platforms is more sparse, but it is postulated that differences in sediment composition, permeability and burial history of the basins resulted in some fundamentally different patterns of diagenesis and mineralisation to the Derbyshire Platform

Spongy-like porosity in peritidal carbonates: An interaction of cyclic sea-level oscillations, fresh water supply and sediment texture
This paper focuses upon the analysis of a complex paleokarstic system recorded within uppermost Triassic
peritidal cycles in northwestern Sicily. Besides documenting spectacular karstification at the Triassic/Jurassic
boundary, it provides an example of stratabound ‘spongy’ or ‘swiss-cheese’ dissolution. On the base of field observations,
microfacies analysis, transmitted-light and cathodoluminescence petrography and stable-isotope
analyses we put forward an original model for the formation of this peculiar stratabound dissolution. It implies
a complex interaction of several controlling factors at the interface between the marine and meteoric diagenetic
realms during the relative cyclic oscillations of sea-level.
The presence of a fresh water supply from an adjacent emerged area is the key for the periodic formation of a
mixing water lens during the relative sea level lowstand that brought about the subaerial exposure of the platform.
The resulting dissolution pattern in the subtidal unit of a specific cycle is strongly controlled by the textural
features of the sediments. In the case of bioturbated wackestones the ‘spongy’ or ‘swiss-cheese’ pattern develops,
while inmollusk-rich beds biomoldic porosity occurs. Inwell-sorted subtidalmembers, such as algal grainstones,
the dissolution originates as randomly distributed vuggy porosity. During periodic flooding of the platform, a new
subtidal unit is formed and the dissolution stops as fully marine phreatic conditions are re-established
Young people's help-seeking: an alternative model
This article is based on a study of young people's help-seeking. Fifty-five qualitative interviews with young people aged 13–14 are analysed to take account of stage process models. It is argued that while the models do have relevance to young people's help-seeking, they have two key limitations. First, they ignore problem legitimization. Second, they do not accord a place in young people's currenthelp-seeking to prior help-seeking pathways. The view that stage process models represent help-seeking as individualized and static led to the formulation by the author of an alternative help-seeking model, in which problem legitimization from micro to macro levels is incorporated alongside young people's prior helpseeking pathways. <br/
