Besides the development of benchmarks for structural optimization, this report shows that optimization techniques can be used not only for changing structural elements, but also for changing structural topology and thus potentially whole building designs. This is relevant for computer aided structural design in general and for interaction of spatial and structural design as presented by the author at eCAADe 2005
Cold-Formed Steel Examples to the Theory and Finite Element Implementation of Plasticity
This paper presents two examples to the theory and finite element implementation of plasticity. The first example is on the cross-sectional behavior of trapezoidal sheeting subjected to a concentrated load. It is shown that the number of elements (and thus the number of integration points) along the corner radius are important for the correct modeling of this static problem. The second example is on the failure of first-generation sheeting subjected to a concentrated load and a bending moment. This problem, especially for large span lengths, can be solved only with explicit dynamic simulations. These are, for our research field, for the first time published here. The explicit simulations normally function with a rather simple integration scheme for plasticity; is shown that our sheeting results are very sensitive to this

Introduction to the Theory and Finite Element Implementation of (Steel) Plasticity
This paper tries to enlighten the subject of (numerical) plasticity by presenting fundamental theory and some very practical examples. For a two-dimensional plain stress state, a Hubert-Henky yield criterion is derived. The flow rule is discussed, including an explanatory numerical example. The yield criteria and flow rule are theoretically applied in a four node finite element. This element is used to show some of the conditions and limitations of a plastic calculation in the finite element method. Finally, a real finite element calculation is made for illustrating the theory derived
Recent Rare and Scarce Wasps and Bees (Hym., Aculeata) Recorded from Guernsey and Herm
The author recently visited Guernsey from 27th July until 9th August 1991, visiting Herm on the 1st and 8th August, to survey the aculeate wasps and bees. The resulting list was compared with Richards (1978) and Archer (1993) with the consequence that 17 species can be added for Guernsey and 20 species for Herm. Two of these species are new to the Channel Islands (Table 1). All the newly recorded species, except for Evagetes pectinipes (L.), Aporus unicolor, Tachysphex obscuripennis, Argogorytes fargei, Philanthus triangulum and Nomada fucata, are not rare or scarce (= notable) species (Falk, 1991) which indicates that these species have been overlooked or are relatively recent arrivals on Guernsey and Herm. Three species were found that are not found in Britain: Evagetes siculus (Lepeletier) (Vazon Bay), Andrena agilissima (Scopoli) (Torteval coast, L\u27Ancresse Common), Sphecodes marginatus (L\u27Ancresse Common)
