Canine sound production, perception, and processing
The first part of the chapter explains the mechanisms underly- ing the production of canine vocalizations with particular ref- erence to the structures mainly involved in the emission of the different sounds. Spectrographic analyses of the most common dog vocalizations are also presented. Hypotheses about the neuroendocrine control of canine vocalizations result directly from studies that analyze the relationships between hormones and behavior with particular reference to vasopressin and vo- calizations emitted during competitive behaviors. The second part of the chapter deals with canine brain auditory pathways involved in vocal perception with particular reference to the different specializations of dogs and human brain areas in pro- cessing distinct types of auditory signals. Finally, effects of vo- calizations on behavior and development are discussed
Vibration and Noise Exposure during Pre-Commercial Thinning Operations: What Are the Ergonomic Benefits of the Latest Generation Professional-Grade Battery-Powered Chainsaws?
In order to compare the vibration and noise exposure of STIHL’s battery-powered MSA 220 C and the combustion driven MS 201 C, a professional operator was monitored during a pre-commercial thinning operation in a twenty-year-old hardwood stand. The vibration levels were measured with a tri-axial accelerometer on the front and rear handle of both the chainsaws, and assigned to five different work elements using a video documentation. Additionally, noise levels were recorded in one-minute intervals, with a dosemeter worn by the operator. The results show that battery-powered chainsaws, when compared to combustion-driven chainsaws, can reduce the daily vibration exposure by more than 45% and the noise dose by about 78.4%, during pre-commercial thinning tasks. Replacing combustion-driven chainsaws with battery-powered ones is therefore generally recommended, to reduce occupational health risks for operators, in this respect. However, the daily vibration exposure of about 2.42 m/s2, caused by the battery-powered chainsaw on the front handle, is still very close to the daily exposure action value set by the EU directives for health and safety requirements. The daily noise exposure of 89.18 dB(A) even exceeds the upper exposure action value. Consequently, a further reduction in the vibration exposure during work is desirable. With respect to noise exposure, additional measures must be implemented for conformity with the current safety standards, making the use of hearing protectors mandatory for electric chainsaws, too

C5 complement inhibition versus FcRn modulation in generalised myasthenia gravis
Background Myasthenia gravis (MG) is an autoimmune disorder affecting neuromuscular junctions, leading to fluctuating muscle weakness. While many patients respond well to standard immunosuppression, a substantial subgroup faces ongoing disease activity. Emerging treatments such as complement factor C5 inhibition (C5IT) and neonatal Fc receptor (FcRn) antagonism hold promise for these patients. However, the current landscape is hindered by a paucity of comparative data that is crucial for treatment decisions. Objective This study aims to compare the effectiveness and safety of C5IT and FcRn antagonists in a real-world setting. Methods A retrospective analysis of 153 MG patients from 8 German specialised MG centres receiving either C5IT (26 eculizumab, 80 ravulizumab) or efgartigimod (47 patients) was conducted. Propensity score matching (PSM) was employed to compare changes in MG-specific outcome parameters within the first 6 months after treatment initiation, along with safety profiles and concomitant MG therapy. Results Both treatment strategies led to rapid clinical improvements and substantial reductions in prednisolone doses. However, insufficient response was noted in 20%–49.1% of patients based on Quantitative MG and MG Activities of Daily Living (MG-ADL) scores. We did not identify any new safety concerns. After PSM, 40 patients remained in each group. In both cohorts, reductions in MG-ADL as prespecified primary study endpoint were comparable. Moreover, analyses of secondary outcome parameters demonstrated similar results for C5IT versus FcRn. Conclusion In contrast to current meta-analyses and indirect comparisons of clinical trial data, our real-world study demonstrates comparable efficacy and safety of C5IT and FcRn antagonism in MG
