    With increasing interest in mixed-anionic hydrides, a number of interesting properties have been reported. Here, the structural and optical properties of (Eu2+-doped) MCaH3–MCaF3 (M = Rb, Cs) are investigated. For M = Rb, a complete hydride–fluoride solid solution series is found and for M = Cs, the known solid solution series (0 ≤ x ≤ 1.70) can be extended to x = 3. In case of Cs, a very bright luminescence emission is observed in Eu2+-doped samples, whereas the luminescence is fairly weak in Rb based compounds. With increasing hydride content, a shift of the emission color from cyan-green to red can be observed. In contrast to earlier reports for mixed fluoride–hydride host, the redshift is not a gradual shift of a single broad emission band, but the appearance of new narrow emission bands on the low energy side, which are assigned to the occupation of sites with higher hydride content. Consequently, this finding represents the first example in a mixed anionic hydride with a site-sensitive emission for sites with locally varying hydride content in the first coordination sphere and may serve as a general example for emission color tuning taking advantage of mixed-anionic compounds

    Determination of phase compositions in ceramics from Gobi desert using complementary diffraction techniques

    The city Khara Khoto is located in the Gobi desert in Inner Mongolia. This city was deserted in the late 14th century and rediscovered in the beginning of the 20th century. In the present study, ceramic sherds typical for the Khara Khoto area have been analysed using neutrons, laboratory X-ray diffraction, synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction as well as optical microscopy as complementary probes in extracting information on the mineral phase compositions as well as on the firing conditions during the pottery production. The data evaluation was performed with the standard diffraction analysis package GSAS and the new developed program AmPhOrAe. The dominating phase is mullite (similar to 60 %) compared to a variable mixture of SiO2 quartz and cristobalite phases (similar to 35 %) and feldspar as a minority phase. Refiring experiments on one of the sherds allow estimating the firing temperatures of the ceramics within the region of 1,150 and 1,250 A degrees C

    Rotatable multifunctional load frames for neutron diffractometers at FRM II-design, specifications and applications

    Novel tensile rigs have been designed and manufactured at the research reactor Heinz Maier-Leibnitz (FRM II, Garching near Munich). Besides tensile and compressive stress, also torsion can be applied. The unique Eulerian cradle type design (omega, chi, and phi axis) allows orienting the stress axis with respect to the scattering vector. Applications of these tensile rigs at our neutron diffractometers enable various investigations of structural changes under mechanical load, e.g. crystallographic texture evolution, stress-induced phase transformations or lattice expansion, and the anisotropy of mechanical response.     Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Phase Behaviour of CoC12-MnC12 Mixed Crystals

    Thermal properties of CoCl2, MnCl2 and their mixed crystals are investigated by means of temperature dependent neutron powder diffraction and time-resolved small angle neutron scattering. The coefficients of thermal expansion of these crystals have been determined as a function of temperature. The temperature-induced structural variations can be explained by distortions of CoCl5/MnCl6 octahedra and changes in Co/Mn-Cl bond lengths. CoCl2 and MnCl2 form homogeneous solid solutions in the entire temperature range between the solidus and 50 K. There is no indication of any miscibility gap as predicted from thermodynamic calculations
