Seaview Survey: GBR Training and Validation Dataset
This dataset consists of: (1) a series of images from a transect on Australia'a Great Barrier Reef ("images_training" and "images_validation" folders); (2) a description of the features we would like to identify within the images ("label_key.csv"); (3) a training dataset that can be used to train an interpretation algorithm to automatically identify those features in the images ("training_dataset.csv"); (4) a validation dataset that can be used to assess the performance of any interpretation algorithm ("validation_dataset.csv"). Each of the images has been processed to correct for lens distortion and cropped to standardise the area covered to approximately 1 square meter 'quadrats'. These training and validation datasets were developed by expert human interpretation of images.The images were collected on several different coral reefs within the Great Barrier Reef between 2012-2014, so represent a variety of communities and conditions.The training and validation datasets consists primarily of randomly selected points on images, but this random sample has been manually augmented to ensure that the full range of features has adequate representation. Cargo operations on LNG ships with special reference to M/V Hoegh Galleon
Brodovi za prijevoz ukapljenog plina sa tankovima membranskog tipa predstavljaju sadašnjost i budućnost svjetske trgovačke flote. Kao takvi, posebni su po svojim izvedbenim karakteristikama, načinu prijevoza tereta te samim operacijama prekrcaja. Kroz ovaj završni radit obradit će se operacije sa teretom na LNG brodovima s membranskim tipom tankova. Rad je podijeljen u 3 glavna poglavlja, od kojih se u prvom opisuju vrste i karakteristike membranskih tankova, a drugo je poglavlje rezervirano za teretne sustave koji se mogu pronaći na membranskim LNG brodovima. U posljednjem poglavlju obrađuje se sama srž ovoga rada, odnosno operacije sa teretom koje prate brod od njegovog prvog izlaska iz suhog doka pa sve do njegovog ponovnog vraćanja u dok. Svaka operacija sa teretom, a ujedno i teretni sustav koji je potreban za obavljanje iste je referenciran na brod Hoegh Galleon. Riječ je LNG carrieru čiji je vlasnik norveška kompanija imena Hoegh LNG.Ships designed for carriage of liquified natural gas with membrane design of tanks represent the present and future of the world merchant fleet. As such, they are special in terms of their performance characteristics, the mode of cargo transport and the cargo operations themselves. Through this thesis, cargo operations on LNG ships with membrane-type cargo tanks will be processed. This thesis is divided into 3 main chapters, the first of which describes the types and characteristics of membrane tanks, and the second chapter is reserved for cargo systems that can be found on membrane LNG ships. The last chapter deals with the very core of this undergraduated thesis, cargo operations that accompany the ship from its first exit from the dry dock until its return to the dock. Any cargo operation, and cargo system required to perform the operation, is referred to the ship Hoegh Galleon. It is an LNG carrier owned by a Norwegian company named Hoegh LNG
Cell death and degeneration in the symbiotic dinoflagellates of the coral Stylophora pistillata during bleaching
Rising sea temperatures are increasing the incidences of mass coral bleaching (the dissociation
of the coral–algal symbiosis) and coral mortality. In this study, the effects of bleaching
(induced by elevated light and temperature) on the condition of symbiotic dinoflagellates (Symbiodinium
sp.) within the tissue of the hard coral Stylophora pistillata (Esper) were assessed using a suite
of techniques. Bleaching of S. pistillata was accompanied by declines in the maximum potential
quantum yield of photosynthesis (Fv/Fm, measured using pulse amplitude modulated [PAM] fluorometry),
an increase in the number of Sytox-green-stained algae (indicating compromised algal membrane
integrity and cell death), an increase in 2’,7’-dichlorodihydrofluroscein diacetate (H2DCFDA)-
stained algae (indicating increased oxidative stress), as well as ultrastructural changes (vacuolisation,
losses of chlorophyll, and an increase in accumulation bodies). Algae expelled from S. pistillata
exhibited a complete disorganisation of cellular contents; expelled cells contained only amorphous
material. In situ samples taken during a natural mass coral bleaching event on the Great Barrier Reef
in February 2002 also revealed a high number of Sytox-labelled algae cells in symbio. Dinoflagellate
degeneration during bleaching seems to be similar to the changes resulting from senescence-phase
cell death in cultured algae. These data support a role for oxidative stress in the mechanism of coral
bleaching and highlight the importance of algal degeneration during the bleaching of a reef coral
A mathematical proof of the existence of trends in financial time series
We are settling a longstanding quarrel in quantitative finance by proving the existence of trends in financial time series thanks to a theorem due to P. Cartier and Y. Perrin, which is expressed in the language of nonstandard analysis (Integration over finite sets, F. & M. Diener (Eds): Nonstandard Analysis in Practice, Springer, 1995, pp. 195--204). Those trends, which might coexist with some altered random walk paradigm and efficient market hypothesis, seem nevertheless difficult to reconcile with the celebrated Black-Scholes model. They are estimated via recent techniques stemming from control and signal theory. Several quite convincing computer simulations on the forecast of various financial quantities are depicted. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
