Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

The Role of Design in Cultural Heritage Based City Branding of Beypazari

In recent years, countries around the world have been replacing national promotion with images of certain cities and determining branding strategies to promote themselves and to compete with other cities. As a result of these strategies, cities have stepped up to positioning themselves like products and conducted studies to market themselves as products. In those branding studies, they especially use their cultural and industrial heritage to apart themselves from other cities. From this point of view, 15 cities were selected for city branding studies in 2008 in the context of 'Brand City Project' which is conducted by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism in order to accelerate the culture tourism. Declaration of one city every year as Cultural Tourism City, restoration of structures with cultural and architectural qualities and ruins, development of local activities up to international standards, construction of facilities and spaces to perform cultural and artistic shows, raising public awareness of the value and preservation of tangible and intangible cultural heritage and international promotion and marketing are among the targets of Urban Scale Branding Strategy for the year 2023. In this study, the city branding process which leads to the rising of cities as new economic assets, the stakeholders which involved in that process, and the role of design, will be discussed. As the foreign examples were being examined, it was determined that different branches of design, such as graphic design, web design, product design, service design and urban design were taking parts in this branding process. In this study, Beypazari, which has a significant economic income with its crafts, industry and agriculture, but much rather promote its mansions and local foods and come up with its culture tourism, is handled. In the field study of Beypazari, qualitative research methods such as literature review, observation, document analysis, semi-structured interviews and photo shoots were used. In the conclusion part of the study, the data obtained were analyzed and whether the branding strategies provide positive value or not to the city and the contribution of design were evaluated

AbstractAfter the discovery of steam power and machinery, the industry has evolved faster and the designers began to design products for mass production by the influence of concepts. During the “design history” courses, matching periods, designers, and products could be more confusing for students. Those courses are generally taught theoretically and are not implemented as interactively. This study based on “Comparative Design History” course, in which design students work in groups on various topics and match the relevant cases between “design history” and those topics. In this paper, group work, comparative education and its contribution to students learning, will be studied

During the COVID-19 pandemic, people’s food preparation and consumption behaviours changed significantly. The increase in home cooking and decrease on take-away food were positive outcomes of pandemic (Wilkins, 2020). With the increase in home cooking, social media has also emerged as an online platform for gaining awareness about consuming and preparing healthy food. People began to share their recipes on online platforms and social media, following chefs’ accounts to try new recipes. This study aims to explore the role of social platforms in promoting healthy eating habits, sharing recipes, and improving culinary skills among individuals. The qualitative research methods were employed to explore the impact of social platforms on food preparation behaviours. An online survey was conducted with 284 Turkish-speaking participants to understand the impact of social media on their relationship with food. The findings showed that the COVID-19 pandemic had a positive impact on participants’ home cooking habits, and this con-tinued after the pandemic. While most participants stated that social media platforms such as Instagram, Face-book and YouTube were the main source of inspiration and recipes, younger participants stated that Pinterest was their most preferred platform for recipes. This shows that not only cultural aspect but also the age groups within the same culture can have different preferences when searching for recipes on social platforms. In conclusion, social media is a powerful tool in consumers’ lives while consuming and preparing food and gaining new skills. However, it is essential to be mindful of the potential risks associated with social media, in-cluding misinformation, incorrect use of ingredients which can cause health problems and other issues

In recent years, local cultural heritage has become an important source of identity formation for cities. This, in turn, increased the interest in cultural heritage and enabled local governments to include cultural heritage in their city branding strategies. Since gastronomy is one of the most distinctive cultural features of cities, gastronomy has been incorporated into city promotions by local stakeholders while creating destinations. The city promoting activities that include gastronomy tourism have increased in cities. In this study, Gaziantep, one of the cities that was selected for the ‘Brand City Project’ by official authorities and has been running branding strategies since the beginning of 2000s were analysed to discuss the relationship between gastronomy tourism and city branding strategies. In this study qualitative and quantitative research methods used to investigate city’s culinary heritage, the implementation of gastronomy tourism and how the city positioned itself as a ‘Brand City: Antep’ in terms of gastronomy and how the it is perceived by the visitors. The research findings illustrate how a city can be repositioned with its cuisine heritage, what role stakeholders can take for implementing these branding strategies and how gastronomy tourism can be embraced not only for creating a tourism destination, but also for branding the city

Disasters and pandemics that have occurred in the last decade have led societies to seek collaborative, sustainable and adaptable solutions to respond to profound social changes. The results of the surveys conducted by different institutions show that especially with the COVID-19 pandemic, the feeling of loneliness felt by individuals in the society has increased, and that encouraged the local governments to carry out various studies to increase the interaction between individuals in the society and improve public health. The COVID-19 pandemic has spurred new approaches to social change, including increased interest in allotment gardening as a means of accessing urban green spaces amid lockdowns. Allotment gardening has become a powerful tool for improving people’s health and well-being, as well as strengthening social relationships. This study explores the role of allotments in improving planetary health and examines strategies to increase the accessibility of green spaces, and thus social relationships for social benefit in a sustainable context

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
