    No full text
The establishment of the European Union (EU) is the most visible demonstration of the impact of globalisation on economic growth. This study aims to clarify the impacts of globalisation on economic growth in the EU region. Based on panel data analysis with statistics collected from twenty-seven European Union member states continuously for the years 2004 to 2018, the results from the research show that globalisation in general and its all three dimensions including economic, political, and social globalisation have positive impacts on economic growth. Political globalisation has a lower impact level than the other aspects. This is the first research using three dimensions of the KOF Globalisation Index to examine the impact of globalisation on the EU-27 area and it does verify the impact of political and social globalisation on economic growth, in addition to the previous controversy about the impacts of these two aspects

Publisher Copyright: © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.There has been an increasing demand to reduce the emissions of diesel engines, especially in maritime applications. Moreover, emission regulations are becoming stricter every year. This has led to an urge for more complex engine control systems with more accurate emissions estimators included. Machine learning methods have been long adopted to create models with high complexity to estimate the engine’s emissions and to rely less on conventional physical measurement devices. This paper presents a brief review of the development of engine emissions estimation using machine learning methods over the last 20 years. The review will however mainly focus on emissions prediction from engine in-cylinder pressure and engine functional vibration signal.Peer reviewe

    No full text
Digital twin is one of the emerging areas of research and technology development and the enabling technologies of Smart Manufacturing and Industry 4.0. This study aims to develop and demonstrate a proof-of-concept prototype with a case study of the digital twin of a robotic system. The system has two main elements: the virtual element and the physical or the real element. The virtual element of system has been built based on the Unity platform, which is a cross-platform game engine developed by Unity Software Inc., and the physical element was built with the use of two servomotors and the NVIDIA® Jetson Nano™ Developer Kit. The virtual and the physical elements are connected and communicated via using the TCP socket protocol suite. A digital twin model of the ABB IRB 120 robot was successfully developed and demonstrated. The collected data include the joint angle position values of the physical and virtual models, and they are stored both locally and in the cloud for the future system development, which can be used as for minimizing the errors between the physical and virtual models of digital twins of robotic systems. The successfully developed digital twin model can be considered as the cost-effective solutions for demonstrating and evaluating potential applications of digital twins in industrial practices as well as in higher educations and research

Identity and Religion among the Contemporary Cham Ahiér in Vietnam

    No full text
This thesis examines contemporary Cham Ahiér identity and religion by asking two major questions: How has religion shaped (and how does it continue to shape) Cham identity; and how can the identity and religion of the Cham be understood through an analysis of rituals? To answer these questions, the author explores the ways in which Cham Ahiér identity was conceptualized by Western scholars and local Cham intellectuals and compares it with the identity construed through ritual activities conducted by ordinary Cham villagers. French colonial scholars of the late 19th and early 20th centuries were the first to suggest that Cham Ahiér are “Brahmanistes” or “Hindouistes” and thus categorized Cham identity on the basis of the assumption that the contemporaneous Cham villagers continued to practice the religion represented in medieval architectural and sculptural artifacts of the kingdom of Champa. This identification produced in the colonial period was used as the groundwork which numerous later researchers built upon. The Vietnamese term “Chăm Bàlamôn,” adapted from the French term “Cham Brahmanistes,” became a fixed category and now serves as the official state-sanctioned term for identification of this particular group of Cham. Contemporary overseas Cham scholars define this group of Cham as “adherents to an indigenized form of Hinduism” or “syncretic Hindu Cham.” In turn, prominent native Cham scholars and intellectuals residing in Vietnam challenged the use of the term “Chăm Bàlamôn” and claimed that it is a foreign term applied by outsiders. They suggested instead the term “Cham Ahiér,” a religious identity designation which is understood as being paired with the term “Cham Awal” through the dualistic cosmological concept of “Ahiér-Awal,” with communities of both “Cham Ahiér” and “Cham Awal” having been “Islamized” through their Malay neighbours. Stepping aside from all these propositions, this thesis takes a fresh look at the contemporary Cham Ahiér community by examining rituals conducted by ordinary villagers as the key to understanding Cham Ahiér identity, and most importantly, Cham Ahiér religion. The author argues that various contexts and discourses constitute different levels of the Cham Ahiér religious identity, and that it is necessary to investigate how it was constructed and perceived by both Cham intellectuals and ordinary Cham villagers. By exploring Cham Ahiér rituals, this thesis shows the extent to which both Hindu and Islamic elements have been adopted, and the means by which this adoption was accomplished. The objective of this thesis is not to categorize, label, or impose upon this group of Cham any specific term of identification that may relate to any other world religion, but to consider the ways that disparate elements cohere in the religion as currently practiced. In other words, this thesis describes how the Cham religion works on a practical ritual level. The author concludes that Cham Ahiér religion is neither systematic nor centralized, and that its rituals represent a mixture, patchwork, and juxtaposition coming from different sources of traditions accumulated over time

Tourists' Emotional Responses to Street Food Experiences in Vietnam

    No full text
Consumption emotions responded to food experiences have been found to determine satisfaction and behavioural intentions. The associations between emotions and different food properties and environmental factors, and individual differences, or other cognitive appraisal processes have been established. Consumption emotions have also been found to play an important role in the understanding of tourists’ behaviours. Researchers have just begun to explore the impact of emotions on tourists’ experience with local, but few specifically on street food. Street food has been found to be both an attraction and an impediment to tourists. Either way, tourists’ experience of street food has been found to link to their perception of destination image, satisfaction, and behavioural intentions. This research aims to uncover the meanings that international tourists to Vietnam attribute to their street food experience in Vietnam, with a focus on their emotional responses, and in relation to their overall food experience and travel experience in Vietnam. The research comprised two qualitative studies. In the first study, thirty-eight international tourists, travelling in Vietnam in the last quarter of 2018, were interviewed with in-depth interviewing and the emojis to facilitate expression of emotions. Interviews were then transcribed and analysed using thematic analysis. In the second study, 1045 TripAdvisor reviews of the street food tours in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam 2018, and 92 low-rated reviews (rated 1-3 stars) of the tours in four cities were chosen for analysis. Content analysis was used to analyse these reviews due to the large amount of data.In the eyes of international tourists in Vietnam, street food was found to exhibit many typical traits that may attract tourists: food and drinks, food places, and their social and cultural values. Street food could also be perceived as an impediment to consumption for international tourists due to its hygiene and safety conditions, or novelty or communication barriers. Regarding the emotional responses to street food experiences, it was found from these studies that tourists’ expressed emotions are closely linked to their cognitive evaluation or appraisals of the food experiences. These appraisals include novelty, unexpectedness, the unknown and risks, and the distance from expectations or motivations or goals. Emotional responses to street food experiences were found to vary in valence, intensity and time. These emotional responses were also associated with tourists’ behaviours towards street food, being categorised to approach, avoid and caution responses. This thesis helps to expand knowledge in local food tourism and tourists’ perceived risks; and recognises the role of appraisal component of emotion, and the dimension of time in consumption emotion. The research also contributes to the understanding and application of emoji in eliciting emotions in qualitative interviews. Managerial implications can be drawn for the operation, management and marketing of street food as a tourism product
