Because English is used as a lingua franca for advancing international trade, business, and economics as well as obtaining information and conducting research all over the world, Turkey has attributed importance to English language teaching with the aim of adapting to globalization process and the EU standards. The fast-growing information technology has also contributed to restructuring English language teaching policy in our country. The renewal of English language curricula of primary schools, revision of English language teacher training curricula of education faculties and establishment of computer laboratories with internet access in schools are concrete indicators of the effect of information technology on language teaching in Turkey
Effective professional development strategies of English language teachers
No full textAbstractThis paper aims at explaining what ‘professional development’ means in ELT teachers’ perspectives and which professional development strategies they prefer using in their teaching career. As to the methodology, the researcher prepared a questionnaire including three open- ended questions responded by 50 language teachers. The results were analyzed through descriptive statistics. The findings showed that the majority of ELT teachers are aware of the necessity of the term ‘professional development’; however, only %30 of the participants give importance to their on-going professional development by using mainly such strategies as participatory practitioner research, professional development portfolios, study groups, and so on
A Study on the Qualities of Effective EFL Teachers from the Perspectives of Preparatory Program Turkish EFL Students
Get PDFThe purpose of the present study was to investigate the characteristics of effective EFL teachers from the perspectives of preparatory program Turkish EFL students. To achieve this purpose, 93 preparatory program Turkish EFL students from the Foreign Languages School of a state university located in the west part of Turkey participated in the study. The questionnaire designed by Salahshour & Hajizadeh (2013) was utilized in this study by the researcher with some minor modifications on it. The findings of this study showed that being enthusiastic and lively, having interest in his/her job and feeling responsibility for teaching, being creative and spontaneous, being self-confident, having a loud and clear voice and having patience with students were the prominent personal traits of effective EFL teachers. The findings also revealed that the majority of the students viewed their teacher as an effective EFL teacher because s/he presented the topic via a variety of examples, had adequate level of linguistic knowledge, pedagogical knowledge and communication skills and dealt with them individually and s/he was patient to them. Lastly, the findings of this study regarding (a) command in English, (b) teaching methodology, (c) evaluation method, (d) amount of teacher’s emphasis on different language skills, (e) mastery over teaching, (f) teacher-student relationship and (g) classroom management were in line with those of previous studies conducted by other researchers in the related literature.

Foreign Language Anxiety of English Language Teacher Candidates: A Sample from Turkey
No full textAbstractThis study aimed to investigate English language teacher candidates’ language learning anxiety and reveal whether there was a significant relationship between foreign language learning anxiety and independent variables such as gender, age and grade level. One hundred and thirty two English language teacher candidates participated in the study, and the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (Horwitz, Horwitz, & Cope, 1986) was used. The results of the study showed that English language teacher candidates had low levels of foreign language learning anxiety and that there was a significant relationship between anxiety and independent variables such as gender, age and grade level

No full textAbstractThis study aims at investigating whether the new English Language Teacher Education (ELTE) curriculum which was put into practice in 2006 promotes prospective EFL teachers’ awareness of CEFR bringing European standards to modern language teaching. In doing so, 72 prospective EFL teachers participated in the study. The data was collected through a questionnaire adapted from. The results of the study revealed prospective EFL teachers’ high level of CEFR awareness and their great willingness for a CEFR-related ELTE curriculum via which they can gain better and more concurrent instructional skills
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
