The Hirsch spectrum: a novel tool for analysing scientific journals
This paper introduces the Hirsch spectrum (h-spectrum) for analyzing the academic reputation of a scientific journal. h-Spectrum is a novel tool based on the Hirsch (h) index. It is easy to construct: considering a specific journal in a specific interval of time, h-spectrum is defined as the distribution representing the h-indexes associated to the authors of the journal articles. This tool allows defining a reference profile of the typical author of a journal, compare different journals within the same scientific field, and provide a rough indication of prestige/reputation of a journal in the scientific community. h-Spectrum can be associated to every journal. Ten specific journals in the Quality Engineering/Quality Management field are analyzed so as to preliminarily investigate the h-spectrum characteristic
Measuring the Research Contribution of Management Academics using the Hirsch-Index
There is an increasing emphasis on the use of metrics for assessing the research contribution of academics, departments, journals or conferences. Contribution has two dimensions: quantity which can be measured by number/size of the outputs, and quality which is most easily measured by the number of citations. Recently, Hirsch proposed a new metric which is simple, combines both quality and quantity in one number, and is robust to measurement problems. This paper applies the h-index to three groups of management academics – BAM Fellows, INFORMS Fellows, and members of COPIOR – in order to evaluate the extent to which the h-index would serve as a reliable measure of the contribution of researchers in the management field

This paper analyses some of the most popular scientific journals in the Quality field from the point of view of three bibliometric indicators: the Hirsch (h) index for journals, the total number of citations and the h-spectrum. In particular, h-spectrum is a novel tool based on h, making it possible to (i) identify a reference profile of the typical authors of a journal; (ii) compare different journals; and (iii) provide a rough indication of their ‘bibliometric positioning' in the scientific community. Asymptotics for the Hirsch Index
The last decade methods for quantifying the research output of individual researchers have become quite popular in academic policy making. The h- index (Hirsch, 2005) constitutes an interesting quality measure that has attracted a lot of attention recently. It is now a standard measure available for instance on theWeb of Science. In this paper we establish the asymptotic normality of the empirical h-index. The rate of convergence is non-standard: ph=(1 + nf(h)), where f is the density of the citation distribution and n the number of publications of a researcher. In case that the citations follow a Pareto-type or a Weibull-type distribution as defined in extreme value theory, our general result nicely specializes to results that are useful for constructing confidence intervals for the h-index.Asymptotic normality;confidence interval;extreme value theory;research output;scientometrics;tail empirical process.

Samson Raphael Hirsch Family Collection 1835-1961
Contains three signed letters from Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch and an unsigned and undated nine page letter/report. The latter report and a letter of August 20, 1860 were discussed in a 1940 article on Rabbi Hirsch in the Dutch newspaper Nieuw Israelitisch Weekblad, a copy of which along with partial English translation is in this collection. There are also eight lengthy letters from leaders of the Amsterdam Jewish community sent to Rabbi Hirsch. A Perfect Hirsch-type Index? Experiences Using the Tapered h-Index (hT)
: The hT -index proposed by Anderson et al. includes all citations, yet scoring them in a way that is comparable with the h-index. This new index is superior to the h-index proposed by Hirsch because: 1) it takes all citations into account; 2) it has no problems with special cases, such as situations with only a few highly cited papers; or the case that, because of a lack of publications the h-index is set artificially equal to the number of publications; 3) it has a higher resolution than the h-index.
