Doing Occidentalism in Contemporary Japan: Nation Anthropomorphism and Sexualized Parody in Axis Power Hetalia,
Axis Powers Hetalia (2006–present), a Japanese gag comic and animation series, depicts relations between nations personified as cute boys against a background of World War I and World War II. The stereotypical rendering of national characteristics as well as the reduction of historically charged issues into amusing quarrels between nice-looking but incompetent boys was immensely popular, especially among female audiences in Japan and Asia, and among Euro-American manga, anime, and cosplay fans, but it also met with vehement criticism. Netizens from South Korea, for example, considered the Korean character insulting and in early 2009 mounted a protest campaign that was discussed in the Korean national assembly. Hetalia's controversial success relies to a great extent on the inventive conflation of male-oriented otaku fantasies about nations, weapons, and concepts represented as cute little girls, and of female-oriented yaoi parodies of male-male intimacy between powerful "white" characters and more passive Japanese ones. This investigation of the original Hetalia by male author Hidekaz Himaruya (b. 1985) and its many adaptations in female-oriented dōjinshi (fanzine) texts and conventions (between 2009 and 2011, Hetalia was by far the most adapted work) refers to notions of interrelationality, intersectionality, and positionality in order to address hegemonic representations of "the West," the orientalized "Rest" of the world, and "Japan" in the cross-gendered and sexually parodied mediascape of Japanese transnational subcultures
The Miyake-Hawthorne Consilience - A Unifying Forensic Reconstruction of Global Plasma Catastrophies (5259 BCE, 663 BCE)
The Miyake-Hawthorne Consilience - A Unifying Forensic Reconstruction of Global Plasma Catastrophies (5259 BCE, 663 BCE)
Subject: A Proposed Transdisciplinary Absolute Chronology Linking High-Energy Solar Particle Events (SPE) to East Asian Cultural Foundations and Archaeological Type-Specimens.
1. Scientific Objective
To establish a "Golden Spike" absolute chronology for East Asian Neolithic and Iron Age sites by correlating known Miyake Events (specifically 5259 BCE and 663 BCE) with high-resolution archaeological markers and indigenous record-keeping.
2. Core Hypothesis
This research proposes that the 663 BCE Miyake Event-a verified global radiocarbon excursion-is the physical catalyst for the Japanese Yatagarasu (Eight-Span Crow) phenomenon. In fact, according to the Nihon Shoki, 663 was the "pivotal" year. It was during this year in the treacherous crossing of the Kumano mountains that the Yatagarasu appeared to lead Jimmu's disoriented army through the peaks. The 3-year alignment with the traditional founding of Japan (660 BCE) suggests that the "Sun-Bird" was a real-time observation of a massive solar proton event/plasma burst, subsequently encoded into the state's "Cosmic Authority." Therefore the author would like to take this time to honor Dr. Miyake's efforts by naming this Solar Particle Event (SPE), "The Yatagarasu Miyake Event of 663 BCE".
3. Data Correlation & "The Consilience of Proof"
Physical Evidence:
Dendrochronological: 18O and 14C spikes identified by Dr. Fusa Miyake et al. in Japanese master chronologies (e.g., the 4354-year-long central Japan record).
Glaciological: 10Be and 36Cl ice core samples verify the 663 BCE Solar Particle Event and dendrochronological records.
Archaeological Markers: The absolute dating of wooden pillars (Itazuke/Yayoi sites) to the 663 ВСЕ event, mirroring the success of the 5259 BCE absolute dating of the Dispilio Tablet in Europe.
Cultural Record: Chronologically verified by the Nihon Shoki. First the poisonous cloud that caused Jimmu's army to fall asleep. Telluric currents induced for the passing charged particles in the CME superheated the local hot springs causing steam with higher concentrations of hydrogen sulfide. Finally the transition from the "Eight-Span Crow" (visual observation) to the "Three-Legged Crow" (systemic Yangshou 5480, 5410, or 5259 BCE/Chinese philosophical update) as a record of high-frequency solar activity.
4. Falsifiable Prediction
I predict that conical amphoras from the Yangshao/Majiayao cultures (displaying "Sun-Bird" and "Halo" motifs) will return a single-year absolute date of 5259 BCE (or within the 5480-5259 BCE cluster) when subjected to the Dispilio-style radiocarbon wiggle-matching protocol.
5. Conclusion & Tribute
By naming this the "Yatagarasu-Miyake Event," this study seeks to honor the pioneering dendrochronological work of Dr. Fusa Miyake while validating the precision of Japanese, Chinese, and Korean observations of solar phenomena. This synthesis acknowledges the shared celestial heritage of the Sanzuwu (China), Samjogo (Korea), and Yatagarasu (Japan) as a unified record of Earth's interaction with the Sun

Recipe for Predicting Strong Ground Motion from Future Large Earthquake
From recent development of the waveform inversion analyses for estimating rupture process using strong motion data during large earthquakes, we have understood that strong ground motion is relevant to slip heterogeneity inside the source rather than the entire rupture area. The source model is characterized by two of parameters, which we will call: outer and inner fault parameters. We propose a recipe of predicting strong ground motions using a multiple-asperity source model. Slip distribution for the multiple-asperity source model is dynamically solved by numerical simulation. Influence of variances of estimated source parameters on ground motions are discussed from synthetic waveforms based on our recipe. From recent development of the waveform inversion analyses for estimating rupture process using strong motion data during large earthquakes, we have understood that strong ground motion is relevant to slip heterogeneity inside the source rather than the entire rupture area. Very long period seismic signals observed before the caldera formation with the 2000 Miyake-jima volcanic activity, Japan
Very long period (VLP) seismic signals, whose waveform consists of an initial impulsive signal and a later oscillatory wave with 0.2 or 0.4 Hz in dominant frequency, were observed before the caldera formation in the 2000 activity of Miyake-jima volcano, Japan. The results of waveform inversion show that the initial and later parts can be explained by a northward single-force of 1.5×10^8 N working at a depth of 2 km beneath the summit and a moment tensor solution at a depth of 5 km below and 2 km southwest of the summit with ~10^12 Nm, respectively. A clear positive correlation of the amplitudes between the two sources strongly suggests that the shallow single-force triggers the deeper moment source in spite of the several km distance between the two sources. To analyze the source time functions of the moment tensor that do not always oscillate in phase, we introduce a new method of moment tensor diagonalization which is performed in the frequency domain. According to the analysis, the two principal components have similar amplitudes and are greater than the third principal component, suggesting an axially symmetric oscillation. One of the possible systems is a combination of two cracks intersecting perpendicularly. Our interpretation is that the single-force was generated when magma containing rock blocks suddenly began to move in a choked subsurface magma path, and the resultant pressure waves propagated and excited a resonance oscillation of the two cracks
