Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. "Closing the R&D Gap, Evaluating the Sources of R&D Spending"
Both spending and tax policies have been implemented in the United States with the goal of stimulating private sector research and development (R&D). Karier questions whether current R&D policy, especially the research and experimentation tax credit, can contribute to closing the gap between nondefense expenditures on R&D in the United States and such expenditures in other countries, such as Japan and Germany. He also explores possible changes to our current R&D policy to make it more effective.
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

Exercise-associated hyponatremia in Alaskan sled dogs: urinary and hormonal responses

Physiol. 83(3): 824–829, 1997.—Exercise-associated hyponatremia occurs in horses and humans, both species that sweat, and in sled dogs, which do not sweat. To investigate the mechanism of exercise-associated hyponatremia in sled dogs, we measured water turnover, serum electrolyte concentrations and osmolality, plasma renal hormone concentrations, and urine composition of 12 fit Alaskan sled dogs before, during, and after a 490-km sled dog race (Ex group). Water turnover and serum electrolyte concentrations were measured in six similarly fit dogs that did not run (Sed group). Water turnover was significantly larger ( P < 0.001) in Ex [190 ± 19 (SD) ml ⋅ kg−1 ⋅ day−1] than in Sed dogs (51 ± 13 ml ⋅ kg−1 ⋅ day−1). There were significant ( P < 0.001) decreases in serum sodium concentration (from 148.6 ± 2.8 to 139.7 ± 1.9 mmol/l) and osmolality (from 306 ± 9 to 296 ± 5 mosmol/kgH2O) of Ex, but not Sed, dogs during the race. Plasma concentrations of arginine vasopressin decreased, whereas aldosterone and plasma renin activity increased significantly ( P < 0.01) during the race. Urine osmolality was unchanged, whereas urine sodium, potassium, and chloride concentrations decreased significantly ( P < 0.05) and urine urea concentration increased ( P = 0.06). These results demonstrate increased water turnover associated with hyponatremia and renal sodium conservation with maintained high urine osmolality in exercising Alaskan sled dogs. </jats:p

Development of Tuberculosis Vulnerability Assessment Conceptual Framework Using Automatic Content Analysis
The tuberculosis prevention and control model needs to be explored. This study aimed to create a conceptual framework for measuring TB vulnerability to guide the prevention program’s effectiveness. SLR method was employed, resulting in 1.060 articles being analyzed with ACA Leximancer 5.0 and facet analysis. The built framework consists of five components: risk of TB transmission, damage caused by TB, health care facility, the burden of TB, and awareness of TB. Future research is required to explore variables in each component to formulate the degree of TB vulnerability.Full Tex

GSK3-mediated instability of tubulin polymers is responsible for the failure of immature CD4+CD8+thymocytes to polarize their MTOC in response to TCR stimulation
This is not in as prestigious a journal as the first paper described, but it is in a fine one (International Immunology) - and describes work that comes from our undergraduate lab alone. The work began years ago (Emily Hinchcliff, the co-first author, is almost finished with her medical school education at Harvard) but needed to be refined. We are perhaps even happier about this publication which represents the work of several students over several years. It may not take the world by storm, but it does add some very clear and crisp novel information about the molecular basis for differences in mature and immature T cell function. These differences underlie both our ability to generate an immune response and to avoid abnormal (autoimmune) responses - and are still rather mysterious. Specifically, we show that a kinase (GSK3) is regulated differently in the two cell types and is responsible for a failure of the young cells to develop a mature response to signals (polarization of a cytoskeletal structure).
