A. Marini ecc.)

    No full text

Rationally designed Magnetic Particles enable Capturing and Detection of Bacterial Pathogens

    No full text
In this work we highlight magnetic blood purification as possible therapy for blood stream infections [1-2], where circulating pathogens are at first removed from the bodily fluid and subsequently recovered and analyzed. (Fig. 1) This process would result in an immediate therapeutic benefit for the patient, while also considerably shortening the diagnosis process, a critical step which heavily affects the final outcome of the treatment. Finally, the use of a newly developed human IgG1 monoclonal antibody against poly-N-acetylglucosamine (PNAG) as targeting moiety extends this therapy to the majority of the pathogens responsible for the most frequent nosocomial infections. We show an experimental proof-of-concept study along with an optimization of carrier-pathogen interactions based on a mathematical model and an investigations on the process safety [3]. [1] I. K. Myla L. Herrmann was photographed by Charles Bretzman in 1929. Her customer card lists her at 2960 South Meridian Street in Indianapolis. A check of the city directory shows her at that address and her occupation was music teacher in the public school system. She lived at home with her parents John P. and Louise Herrmann and she had a brother John A. Herrmann a student, also at home. This image is a preservation copy made from an unstable original nitrate negative. The image is part of Series III. Mc-Lilliefors: a completeness magnitude that complies with the exponential-like Gutenberg–Richter relation

This upload is associated with the publication: Herrmann, M. and W. Marzocchi (2020). Inconsistencies and Lurking Pitfalls in the Magnitude–Frequency Distribution of High-Resolution Earthquake Catalogs. Seismological Research Letters, 92(2A). doi: 10.1785/0220200337 in which we explore high-resolution earthquake catalogs and analyze whether their magnitude distribution complies with the exponential-like Gutenberg–Richter (GR) relation. (Spoiler: those catalogs do not preserve the exponential-like magnitude distribution, which characterizes ordinary catalogs, toward low magnitudes.) Specificially, we estimate a lower magnitude cutoff, or completeness magnitude, Mc, that complies with the exponential-like distribution of the Gutenberg–Richter relation. Note that an exponential-like distribution above Mc is a necessary and sufficient condition to calculate the b-value of the Gutenberg–Richter relation (otherwise the physical meaning of the b-value becomes questionable). We use the Lilliefors test [Lilliefors 1969]1 as a statistical goodness-of-fit test with the exponential distribution to determine the lowest magnitude cutoff above which the magnitude is exponentially distributed, which we call McLilliefors. In other words, above McLilliefors, the magnitude–frequency distribution is consistent with the exponential-like Gutenberg–Richter relation. The Jupyter notebook demo-Lilliefors-test.ipynb (can also be viewed at nbviewer.jupyter.org to render the interactive plot) demonstrates the principle of our method for one example catalog by making use of the Python code in mc_lilliefors.py (the class McLilliefors). Please find more information, applications, and findings in our paper.
