Synaptic plasticity and neuronal refractory time cause scaling behaviour of neuronal avalanches
Neuronal avalanches measured in vitro and in vivo in different cortical networks consistently exhibit
power law behaviour for the size and duration distributions with exponents typical for a mean field
self-organized branching process. These exponents are also recovered in neuronal network simulations
implementing various neuronal dynamics on different network topologies. They can therefore be
considered a very robust feature of spontaneous neuronal activity. Interestingly, this scaling behaviour
is also observed on regular lattices in finite dimensions, which raises the question about the origin of the
mean field behavior observed experimentally. In this study we provide an answer to this open question
by investigating the effect of activity dependent plasticity in combination with the neuronal refractory
time in a neuronal network. Results show that the refractory time hinders backward avalanches forcing
a directed propagation. Hebbian plastic adaptation plays the role of sculpting these directed avalanche
patterns into the topology of the network slowly changing it into a branched structure where loops are

Spatial features of synaptic adaptation affecting learning performance
Recent studies have proposed that the diffusion of messenger molecules, such as monoamines, can
mediate the plastic adaptation of synapses in supervised learning of neural networks. Based on these
findings we developed a model for neural learning, where the signal for plastic adaptation is assumed to
propagate through the extracellular space. We investigate the conditions allowing learning of Boolean
rules in a neural network. Even fully excitatory networks show very good learning performances.
Moreover, the investigation of the plastic adaptation features optimizing the performance suggests
that learning is very sensitive to the extent of the plastic adaptation and the spatial range of synaptic
connections
Aspects théoriques de l'historiographie chinoise des années 1980
Theoretical aspects of Chinese historiography in the 1980s.
Starting with the "crisis of historiography" (shixue weiji) and the debates on methodology, this article analyzes historical theory in the PRC during the 1980s. Two controversies are more particularly considered : that on periodisation, and that on "historical forces." Thus, in spite of the decline of Marxism, historical research is still conceived of as amalgamating historical knowledge, philosophy and politics. Change is more evident in the search for new topics of investigation and for a reflection on society. In a way typical of the intellectual crisis of the 1980s, political options oscillate between determinism and voluntarism. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
