No full textVirgil Suarez is a Professor in the MFA Creative Writing Program at Florida State University. He received his M.F.A. from Louisiana State University in 1987. Suarez was born in Cuba in 1962. He specializes in creative writing (fiction and poetry) and Latino/a (especially Cuban-American) literature. He is the author of over fifteen books of prose and fiction including 90 Miles (Selected & New Poems) forthcoming in 2005 from the University of Pittsburgh Press, The Soviet Circus Visits Havana & Other Stories (University of Arizona Press, 2004), Landscapers & Dreams (Lousiana Literature Press, 2003) Vespers: Spirituality in America (University of Iowa Press, 2003), and Guide to the Blue Tongue (University of Illinois Press, 2002). Honors include the G. MacCarthur Poetry Prize, 2002, the Book Expo America/Latino Literature Hall of Fame Poetry Prize for best book of poetry (Banyan, LSU Press), several Pushcart Prize nominations, and a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts

MicroRNAs as regulators of endothelial cell functions in cardiometabolic diseases
No full textEndothelial cells (ECs) provide nutrients and oxygen essential for tissue homeostasis. Metabolic imbalances and other environmental stimuli, like cytokines or low shear stress, trigger endothelial inflammation, increase permeability, compromise vascular tone, promote cell proliferation, and ultimately cause cell death. These factors contribute to EC dysfunction, which is crucial in the development of cardiometabolic diseases. microRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNAs that have important functions in the regulation of ECs. In the present review, we discuss the role of miRNAs in various aspects of EC pathology in cardiometabolic diseases like atherosclerosis, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and the metabolic syndrome, and in complication of those pathologies, like ischemia. We also discuss the potential therapeutic applications of miRNAs in promoting angiogenesis and neovascularization in tissues where the endothelium is damaged in different cardiometabolic diseases. No full textLa robótica cooperativa nace como posible solución para problemas complejos mediante el uso de diferentes agentes cooperativos que mediante la interacción entre estos y entre los agentes con el medio, logran cumplir con la ejecución de tareas complejas. Este trabajo presenta el proceso de diseño y construcción de tres robots móviles que interactúan de forma cooperativa para la gestión y manejo de inventarios, en donde cada uno cuenta con un PRIMER 2 como sistema de control central, el cual a su vez ejecuta las aplicaciones de control y gestión de inventarios sobre un sistema operativo embebido. En cuanto al diseño electrónico, cada agente o robot, cuenta con un coprocesador encargado del intercambio de información entre el PRIMER 2 y los sensores; el sistema hace uso de tecnología RFID para ubicación dentro de la bodega, un arreglo de sensores en disposición de ¨scanner¨ para la navegación y un modulo de comunicación inalámbrica ZigBEE para la transferencia de información entre los agentes y el usuario mediante una red MESH. En cuanto al diseño mecánico, lo más relevante, recae en el diseño y construcción de ruedas MECANUM para brindarle al robot la habilidad de movimiento holonómico. 1PregradoIngeniero ElectrónicoThe cooperative robotic systems born as a possible solution for complex problems using different cooperative agents through the interaction between them and the medium for achieve complex tasks. This work presents the process of design and construction of three mobile robots that interact cooperatively for inventory management, where each one of them has a PRIMER 2 for central control system. This PRIMER 2 features an embedded operating system, which runs the inventory management applications. About the electronic desing, each agent or robot have a coprocessor for for the exchange of information between the PRIMER 2 and the robot sensors; the system uses the RFID technology for location in the warehouse, an scanner type array of sensors for line following and one ZigBEE communication module for data transfer between robots over a mesh grid tipe network. And about the mechanic desing, the more relevant of this project is the use of MECANUM wheels for holonómico movements of the robot.
