"1942, the year of silence" was written by historian professor Herman Van Goethem. During years he explored the police reports in Antwerp, and describes in great detail how a climate of harassment and fear is created in Jewish families, ending in razzia's and deportation by the German occupant. The mayor of Antwerp, Leo Delwaide, and his head of police collaborated. The Belgian public prosecutor did not intervene until Belgian work refusiks were deported. The author also accuses the Belgian government in London for not condemning firmly enough the deportation of Jews, making this government co-responsible. He says that the government-Pierlot in London, as well as nearly everyone in occupied Belgium, expected the Germans to win the war. They hoped, the author says, for a compromise peace with Germany. Only after the victories of the Allies in Africa and Stalingrad did everyone make a U-turn.
I refute this thesis by citing many examples of the different forms of resistance in 1940, 1941 and 1942 that are ignored by the author, including the Information and Action services, sabotages, a clandestine press in three languages, strikes, rescue of pilots, Jews, and anti-nazis, and many other acts of resistance. The texts of the daily radio broadcasts by the BBC from the Belgian government, politicians and trade unionists in London, also disprove the authors thesis. The latter is also contradicted in an earlier publication by the author himself.
The impact of the many Belgian nazi movements, intellectuals and local SS-groups is not studied in this book.
The moral judgment by the author indirectly creates more understanding of those collaborating with the German occupant. I wonder whether this view is influenced by his family history that the author describes in three chapters; his grandfather received a death sentence after the war

A series of the Flemish television of memories by "Children of the Holocaust" was concluded by comments of experts. Historian Herman Van Goethem underlines the example set by those who resisted the nazis, but cites two individuals only, minimizing their contribution. In contrast, the "Children" tell how they, or their parents, were saved by Belgian individuals, families and schools where they went into hiding. I cite the figure of the 42.000 Jews saved vs 28.000 deported, and the number of Belgian resistants and secret agents who were killed by the nazis. Belgian authorities who publicly protested or refused collaboration, were quickly eliminated by the German occupant.
